Hello to all. I am a Lakota woman. Yes Sioux does mean snake in the grass and we are not snake "people" never have been and never were. We did not mate with snakes danzilla777. We don't have storys saying that it is merely like the word Sioux....someone elses opinion. Yeffton2 We still do take insult to the word sioux. It was the US government who gave my people long ago that name, we still feel the insult of the meaning of it, most of us neway.
sioux means snake? or snake people? intersting...... the snake brothers came down and mated with the women.....that's part of the old story tellers legends of the sioux and many other cultures.
You are quite right. The word "sioux" is the shortened French way of pronouncing the Ojibway word for the Lakota-Nakota-Dakota nation "nadoweisiwug" which literally means "snake/enemy-little-they are".
White French people shortened the last part of it - isiwug and pronounced it as [suu] and thus wrote "sioux". Therefore the word "sioux" is an pejorative expression. Many Lakotas didnt accept this but nowadays its widely used - after two hundred years ppl no more feel the insulting meaning in it.
Thank you for sharing. Beautiful flute music! Love it!
