Incredibly talented person. Starting off as a Jazz musician who got to study at Julliard, and then became an incredible painter who is not mentioned enough in Art history!. He had already addressed pop iconography in his work well BEFORE Andy Warhol. Not to mention that his style was a mix of abstract expressionism and figurative painting He was doing this back when painters were too cool for subject matter and that completely abstract an minimalist work was the "in" thing.

This guy has a real Technicolor history--from being life-long friends with Miles Davis to almost getting murdered in Africa while filming a documentary, to having sex with his dog, also doing a documentary called "Tits" ABOUT tits, this list goes on and on and on....
