I have the pc version and I use keyboard, s forward, x back, f nitro and launch and so on. Check my channel info.

Right dude. At least that's my experience - but I could be wrong :)

Most important thing is to point the car at the star and to avoid aerial controls - they slow you down so much. If you need to correct your flight path you won't reach the records lengths IMO.
