This is a very emotional video, but that is my exact problem with it. Saying that 30% of coral species were determined to be in danger of extinction doesn't mean anything about long term trends. We are in 2011 now, and I wonder if anything has changed in the last 2 years. You know what, I don't think it has. Climate change is a reality, but it is a reality with or without our help. I think there is a way- but the way is to end commercial fishing in big trawlers- So the only seafood we eat comes from rod and reel, the old fashioned way, and the market prices go up. But until then, consumers will have to make the decisions. If we end the demand they will have no one to sell to. Meat has it's own problems- factory farming is terrible. Abuse to the animals is rampant. The whole world needs to reevaluate how and where it gets all food.

awesome video but i think that coral reefs are resilient and if they have been around for millions of years they probably have seen it all before. surely they will move to where the temps suit them. perhaps we could see coral reefs in Cape Town or of the British coast
@SAbirdz its not that simple. the reefs are dying. i live in north queensland and have seen it for myself. the changes affecting them are happening too fast for them to simply move with the change. many of the small fish species that clean the reefs are disappearing too upsetting the entire system allowing algal build up to smother and outcompete coral. There are dozens of other factors as well. if you want to see the reef, i recommend doing it soon because it will be gone in my lifetime.

You are correct, Touching it does not necessarily cause it harm. It is far from being a simple though. Some Corals are more sensitive then others, some are more fragile and others, some more susceptible to infection caused by superficial damage. The Euphylliids for example tend to rapidly die when there tissue is torn via Infection caused by protozoans.
On the other hand some deal with damage remarkably well.
In most cases, touching them is not the greatest threat to them.
Fact algae blooms from the Great Barrier Reef contribute over 1/3 of the planets oxygen supply. I live here, THE REEF IS DYING. It's not just a tourist destination it is the lungs of the planet. @pbird88 - Please check the result of an all-party committe enquiry into the Climate Research Unit that had it's emails hacked - they found Prof Phil Jones the head of the unit, DID NOT try and mislead people with false data and that the hackers cherry picked phrases to make it look like the scientists were covering up information global warming.

I think there is a way- but the way is to end commercial fishing in big trawlers- So the only seafood we eat comes from rod and reel, the old fashioned way, and the market prices go up. But until then, consumers will have to make the decisions. If we end the demand they will have no one to sell to. Meat has it's own problems- factory farming is terrible. Abuse to the animals is rampant. The whole world needs to reevaluate how and where it gets all food.

awesome video but i think that coral reefs are resilient and if they have been around for millions of years they probably have seen it all before. surely they will move to where the temps suit them. perhaps we could see coral reefs in Cape Town or of the British coast

@SAbirdz its not that simple. the reefs are dying. i live in north queensland and have seen it for myself. the changes affecting them are happening too fast for them to simply move with the change. many of the small fish species that clean the reefs are disappearing too upsetting the entire system allowing algal build up to smother and outcompete coral. There are dozens of other factors as well. if you want to see the reef, i recommend doing it soon because it will be gone in my lifetime.

The climate change/global warming conclusions were derived from tests and studies made in Finland. These results have since been shown to have been made on falsified data. The true results show that the world's average temperature has actually gone down. That's not to say The Great Barrier Reef is not in danger or that it is not dying off in places. Reefs die and reefs grow. If the temperature where the reef is now is too high the reef will grow elsewhere.Its the process of dying and regrowth

You are correct, Touching it does not necessarily cause it harm. It is far from being a simple though. Some Corals are more sensitive then others, some are more fragile and others, some more susceptible to infection caused by superficial damage. The Euphylliids for example tend to rapidly die when there tissue is torn via Infection caused by protozoans.
On the other hand some deal with damage remarkably well.
In most cases, touching them is not the greatest threat to them.

Fact algae blooms from the Great Barrier Reef contribute over 1/3 of the planets oxygen supply. I live here, THE REEF IS DYING. It's not just a tourist destination it is the lungs of the planet. Sit up, shut up AND DO SOMETHING about it. The QLD Government just introduced FLOURIDE to our water, where does the overflow go? STRAIGHT TO THE REEF! In regards to the IPCC e-mails, I never said they aren't real, what I've been saying is that the meaning of the quoted e-mails were not interpreted correctly. People often say things in e-mails that are only meant for the intended recipients because they have a better understanding of the real message.

Citizen, You still haven't explained why the earth has been cooling for 8 years, and that the sun is getting hotter, yet you claim humans are causing "global warming"? Then the e-mails from the people you are referencing say this:

Yes global warming but don't forget the sugar cane/bannana farmers using fertilizers. Well in the wet season where does all this run-off go. It sure as he'll don't go to the Isa. It gets washed out to sea and guess what is out there The Great Barrier Reef. Awesome video

Everyone is so blind, as long as we are living with the current system we have we will never solve anything well if we have to solve anything lol. Go figure youreself, all the technology to live CO2 neutral is there but why are we not using it??? I know the answer, you to?? its the system lol And there is no such thing as global warming, earth warms up and cools down multiple times in its existing and keeps doing that.

I first went to the Great Barrier Reef, in particular, Green Island off the coast of Cairns in 1974.
I went there again in 2005 and while out on the glass bottomed boat I made the comment, "It's not as bright and colourful as it used to be"
I'm not convinced about global warming but something is happening on the Barrier Reef, if only at Green Island....maybe all the boats and tourists and killing off the coral?

We know the earth is cooling, but some freaks want to still believe it is warming, although the data & e-mails leaked showing conclusive fraud. This is a new religion called "gaia" worship, that doesn't use science, rather irrationality in environmentalism.
Any true environmentalist would see that Copenhagen is nothing to do with the real problems, rather using environment as an excuse to tax tax tax.
Global Warming was invesnted by head of Enron 15 years ago, that's how stupid it is.

Through leaked IPCC documents & proper science we now know there was a deliberate fraud by people at certain universities under the auspices of the UN. Look up "climate gate" and you can read the whole e-mails, machine code, everything leaked, with messages between the people saying "how do we best falsify this data so that it looks like global warming. Don't send out data to peer review journals when they ask, we don't want the truth to come out. We will change peer-reviewing if we have to."
