I really like Thomas in this. It isn't all Broadway-esque and showy, so to speak. It is the Phantom "singing" his love for Christine and sounds how it should. I like it!
I'm sorry, but everytime he took a breath i had to giggle... then at 6:30 i just... eheh... I have to admire the talent it takes to sing like that but the microphone picked up every little thing xD. Gary and TJO are so sexy .__.
Gary was singing Raoul since FOREVER, and they put him on tour as the Phantom. He never got to do it on Broadway. Gary's a GREAT Raoul though. He's the best one I've ever seen.
I thought I explained it here before, but Tom said that that particular day, the fog machine was choking him up and he had to gasp for air. He didn't have a cold, he was dry-mouthed and couldn't breath. If you watch ANY of his other videos here on youtube, you'll hear that he does NOT have a gasping issue when he sings. Would Harold Prince personally ask Tom to take over the Bway stage if he gasped after every phrase? Unlikely.
Is it just me, or did it sound like O'Leary sings "Let your soul take you where you long to...pee?" Seriously, I had to listen to it twice, and it really does sound like it. I'm not dissing him or anything, I think his performance was great...it just sounds funny, is all. ;-P
The thought of it though...where you long to pee...still totally cracking me up! What if Christine really did have to pee during MotN? LOL!
it was so freaky xD i was reading a fanfic in another window while listening to this and then i hear "PEE!" it was so weird...i'm half smiling mostly grimacing...my face hurts!
Thomas was the first Phantom I saw. I'll never forget him as he was the first one I saw live, and he did a very good job. However, I've also seen Brad Little, Brent Barrett, Anthony Crivello, Gary Mauer and Tim Martin Gleason in the role. Gary is the best I've seen so far, Tim is last. Not that he didn't try, just makes a better Raoul. As for hearing Thomas' breathing, remember they had more mics in the studio which allowed for otherwise unnoticeable sounds.
That's the makeup. The first layer of masking over the face is the same for every actor, as is theactual mask. Imported from London. Nothing about the costume is customized for any of these men. In some ways, kinda stinks, huh?
That's actually quite wrong. Each actor has a life cast of their face/head made, and the deformity is sculpted off of that. From there, the mask is sculpted to fit over the deformity rather than the actor's actual face. Each mask is specifically made for that actor. Deformities will vary from production to production as well, and change over the years in the long running productions.
This is true as if you look at the different phantom's masks they aren't the same. If you look at the original mask it is less detailed than current mask and a slightly different shape
I saw Gary Mauer as the Phantom last year.Last year,I went as the Phantom with my mask, suit, and my cape.Everyone in the theatre thought that I was the real Phantom!I remember hearing a little kid asking"Mommy,is that the real Phantom"?Well here's something for you all to know:I was not the real Phantom.I was impressed with my dressing up as the Phantom! No wonder that's why people liked my costume if I went backstage after the show,Gary Mauer would've been impressed with my Phantom costume.
When I saw TJO I wasn't aware of his breathing and his was one of the best performances I have ever seen. When I saw this on Today, I wondered, "what's he doing?"
Gary is one of the best Phantom out there hands down, it would of been a treat to hear him sing phantom in this. =)

I think Gary sounds better as Raoul than he does as the Phantom.

This is the "Broadway" tempo, the tour and esp the film was SUPER SLOW!
zerbie22 8 months ago
Wow! If they would've done Vegas at this speed, they wouldn't have had to cut out any of the music or dialogue whatsoever!
OvaltineEucerin 8 months ago
Is it me, or is the tempo a little too quick ... this should be sung slightly slower.

Do you have anymore TJO clips?

TJO is wonderful, he has that hard edge that makes the Phantom a dangerous guy.

God, I can feel Thomas trying to undress me with his voice.

:)

@SamSkii14 I disagree - I think he's more of a Raoul voice than Phantom.

Gary played The Phantom when I saw it on tour back in '05. He was spectacular. It's a shame he never got to play him on Broadway.

i think this is the curlyest Christine wig I have ever seen!
Beautiful preformance

You are correct. I remember reading this somewhere, probably in the TJO fanclub newsletter.
He said he was incredibly thirsty by the end of this performance. Indeed, this probably explains the gasping.
I saw him live twice, and he didn't gasp the way he does in this video.

YUP! I'm sick of people critiquing him when they haven't seen the AWESOMENESS that is TJO live.
