My friend's mom used to have one of these. I couldn't even fit in it without my head hitting the ceiling when I was in middle school. And that was BEFORE puberty and growth spurts and all that nonsense. Still a cool car, though.
The original ideas that VW had in the past are long gone. There is no simplicity in their vehicles anymore. They are in business for the money now competing with the other car manufactures making Honda and Toyota looking vehicles. Tucker had the same idea and the Government crushed him as well. It's truly sad that people with great ideas will only be allowed into the market when they walk a straight line with all the other sheep and build a totally different product then what they had in mind.
I think they´re the same car, at least they look the same, but I think the Variant designation was more used in Europe while the Squareback subname was used more in America
I m serious, I drive a classic Beetle and it has happened, specially with young gas attendants, they laugh when I open the front, and there is no engine.
Okay - well it just sounded surprising to an old guy like me who grew up with the Beetle. But I guess I can understand the younger generations not knowing,
oh i know about that. i'm only 14! my dad's going to buy me a car for when i get my permit and liscence and i'm thinking about maybe getting a beetle! they are so cool!
DO IT! I cant think of a better first car than an air-cooled VW. Insurance is cheap, parts are cheap, EXELENT gas milage, and its one of the easiest cars to work on ever! Might not be the safest or fastest mode of transport around, but that can all be changed with a little money and a few tools.
I owned one of these cars, a 1970. It was great for the time being (1983)! I once carried 7 people in it! The only downfall was the lack of good heat and frost on inside of windshield, rusting and it leaked from under the dash when it rained, but hey i paid $375!
Lol that reminds me a funny moment. A few ago a girlfriend I had was from Japan. She never saw(in person, lol) an old-timer Vw. When I showed her one, she was like("where's the engine? OmG, how does this car run").
My mother bought a 66 back in 1973, already then pretty rusty!
A friend of my dad spent a lot of time welding this poor car up.
After a pretty nice but cheap paint job it looked like new!
Two years later this car was just eaten up by the rust trolls.....
I can still from time to time feel the smell of it though.............

Our american friends can't differ dutch (= netherlands) from deutsch(=german).
Those are two different languages, though it sounds alike.
That clip was german = deutsch.

This proves that rear engine is superior for passenger cars and vans.

Dont hear too well but:
You can accommodate nearly as much luggage as you want in a VW Variant because it has another trunk in front. Just think about that.
Corrections welcome.
It was the "Squareback" in the US—I loved mine dearly (until until I got my Rabbit ;-)
dreiSchlangen 2 years ago
@dreiSchlangen better than "Just think about that" would be "You only have to bear that in mind"
the gag about it is that you quickly forget about it because normally there's the engine in the front

I'd rather not put my groceries in the back of this cutie ;-), I think it would give a brand new example of cheesiness! :-(
