if you go to purple math and type in meaning of slope in the search, in the first paragraph, it shows you another way to read the slope that isnt really taught in school
now it makes sense for me...thank you for the great explanation..but my stupid teacher at school couldn't solve an exercise that included the trig function...we had to find the linear approximation of sin(1) and sin(9/4)..if u can explain that to me that would be so great..thanks!!
Thank you so much for your brilliant explanation! I sat in class being the only person who seemed to not understand anything going on. This really helped a lot (:
I love you! I can do my homework now!! I like that you gave a real life example then gave the formula. Most classes just skip to the formula and it has no meaning
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Crystal clear explanation. Best video on YouTube for explaining the concept of linear approximation so simply. I wish you were my math teacher!
This is very good because it allows you to understand the basic ideas of linear approximation without clouding the understanding with the concept of differentials.
@zakily He actually did this problem wrong. it is supposed to be rise 1 and run 10. My Calc teacher showed us this and we all shared a laugh seeing his did it wrong.
@skulakk Then you are not very bright. The slope is 1/10 which is the same is .1/1. If he goes to the right 1, then he is supposed to up .1 (which is the same as 1/10). He did it correctly.
I worry for your calc teacher.... 1/10 is the slope of the tangent line. He goes over one to because the value of the function he is approximating is root(26).
Excellent video. I never learned slope as rise/run so I had to watch the end of the video a few times in order to translate the equation into terms I understood, but other than that this was extremely helpful. You have beautiful handwriting :D
Hey , Thanks . I am going to finally pass calculus because of you! I have Linear Approximation from last 3 days...should have seen this 3 days ago. Thank you Thank You!!!!!!!
That's the square root of 25. We take the square root because the function f that we are doing the linear approximation with, in this example, is f(x) = square root of x.
Thanks for making this video. My professor and textbook give the equation of course, but I never understood the reasoning behind it and how to use it. Your video definitely helps :)

wait if the slope is rise over run and the slope is 1/10 wouldn't when you go the right one you go up 10?
985Tanner2285 1 year ago
@985Tanner2285 I think you should take english classes cause you cant listen or understand words. Rise means go up, Run means move to the right/left.
Rise over run, 1 over 10, rise 1, run 10.
Rise .1, run 1
go back to Algebra 1 NOOB!
1462895376 1 year ago
@985Tanner2285 no you go to the right one, and up by 1/10th.
