5. Epic single version (shorter of this...again, yuck!)
The original Sire Records versions were the ones that were first played upon release in 1982. We played the Sire 6:30 version in Heavy rotation at WTCS, Fairmont, WV. This version? We HATED this version!!!
@KazakageoftheSand Realize that between Sire's issuing "Uncertain Smile" and the release of "Soul Mining" was almost a year and a half. Us and the local college station played only the Sire version of "Uncertain Smile" (whichever length you may choose). When "Soul Mining" was released, we went straight into "This Is The Day"...which is what Epic released as both 7" and 12" singles, at least to radio. At NO time did any station in this area EVER play this version of "Uncertain Smile"!

I've had this album on vinyl for about 22 years, and I can honestly say this is the version on it. Does the original single use a flute? I've always thought Matt orchestrated all these songs brilliantly, but he seemed to be heavily inspired by the hypocrisy of politics, and after Mind Bomb he seemed to lose direction. Last I saw of him he was wearing a cowboy hat and the edginess of the songs were gone.
I had the single on 45 vinyl a very long time ago. I think I remember at the time there were different versions of the song. The flute used to come in after he sang, "I'll try to swim and haul you out".
A huge Golden nugget, buried far beneath a heap of everyday pap! Why is this not better known by people! Mind music. + Jools Holland is priceless on this!
Classic song on a Classic Album.

There were five main versions of this song:
1. Sire 12" short version (yuck!)
2. Sire 12" medium version around 6:30 (best!!!)
3. Sire 12" long version around 9:00 (overkill)
4. Epic LP version (this one...the worst)
5. Epic single version (shorter of this...again, yuck!)

What version is this? It's not the original single with the flute.

i think that was the original 7"... it's the version on "left of the dial, songs from the 80's underground". it's sung differently too...
