bill evans did play out of his comfort zone.Go to marian mcphartland interveiw with bill evans ,he once played boggie woogie. Also go to oliver nelsons blues and the abstract truth, this number really swings.
I feel Bill Evans offered the best definition of jazz. He said that jazz is as in the form of a japanese art of painting on a taut piece of leather, where you any stroke on the leather cannot be erased or adjusted - one shot only. Jazz is played that once only and impossible to repeat that exact performance. Can any japanese artist give me the name of that japanese form of painting?
I LOVE BILL EVANS, BUT HAD NEVER HEARD HIM "SWING" BEFOR. DOES ANYONE KNOW OF HIM PLAYING OUT OF HIS COMFORT ZONE OF BALADS AND VENTURING INTO TOE TAPPING SWING TUNES????
@gladdad101 Bill may have been better known for his playing of ballads, but he has always swung. He swung on all of his albums. Check them out, especially his late albums, where he swung like a madman.
So far, I haven't heard any Bill Evans recording which is short of excellent. This one is among the best. By the way, for those interested in learning about the very interesting but tragic life of this great musician, read "Bill Evans: How my heart sings", by Peter Pettinger. I had the pleasure of attending one of his last concerts, with Marc Johnson in bass and Eliot Zigmund in drums. Just superb.
FDKYMO--thanks for posting...this is absolutely superb, and a reminder that there ARE things in life that brush up really closely against sheer, total perfection.
GREEN DOLPHIN STREET was a movie made in NZ it was a huge flop by MGM but the song ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET was a huge hit the BILL EVANS TRIO is the best i have ever heard BR.

Bill Evans swings on his collaboration album with Cannonball Adderley. The songs 'Venice' 'Elsa' Waltz for Debby' and 'Toy' are all swinging!
