  • Haunting ...

    v=-yQ51a-jwYo

  • When Zoot Sims met Romano Mussolini for the first time, he said, "Sorry to hear about your Dad." Zoot was a Wise Asses' Wiseass....

  • sad little valentine...

  • amazing!

  • Candy brought me here.

  • For some or other reason, I always associate this with a movie like Leaving Las Vegas.

  • STRUNG OUT

  • @delpurgatorio117 and amazing

  • whatever his demons... one cannot deny the pure sensuality of this song and ultimately one can only judge an artist by the emotion his work invokes... a beautiful version of my funny valentine for sure...

  • ahahah you see: Romano Mussolini, son of Benito.... :)

  • This is one cool cat!!

  • Chet baker is the shit!

  • @Kevinized100 idiota

  • @Kevinized100

    YOU ARE SHIT!!!

  • @Morux1973 was there a "the" missing here?

  • To everyone: Watch the documentary of Chet Baker's life on You Tube. The documentary is entitled "Let's Get Lost." "Let's Get Lost" is the name of a song, a song that is a favorite of jazz enthusiasts and jazz musicians.

  • To Diosprometheus: Thanks for the reply. You simply MUST get a copy of "Deep In A Dream," the biography of Chet Baker's life. You will not be able to put the book down. Also, even if you have never heard of Art Pepper, it is imperative that you buy a copy of his autobiography entitled "Straight Life." Art Pepper's autobio is the best book I have ever read, and it is even more spellbinding than Chet Baker's if that's possible. It is imperative that these books both should be read.

  • @harrell222 Thanks for these tips. I be sure to check them out. Yea...Art Pepper was one of the great alto sax players and a sort of founder of the WC Jazz sound. He fell in with that same crowd as Chet and Mulligan getting hooked on the big and was in out of jail for years. He hooked up with Buddy Rich too and died too soon. I am a sort of amateur music historian so I like to read about these cats. The made great music but they lived some sordid lives.

  • @Diosprometheus I remember reading a long time ago that when Chet first became popular he was sold as the James Dean of Jazz. This is when he had those pretty boy looks. I rarely see reference to that in some of the current bios on him. Chet own that song MFV. I looked at the vid again and there are definitely a few teeth missing around 1:58 min mark. Thanks you are great to keep his legacy going.

  • @Diosprometheus Thanks, Diosprometheus, for your latest comments. Regarding Chet having been described as the "James Dean of jazz," oh, ABSOLUTELY! He was drop-dead gorgeous and had the most beautiful little baby face and angelic and innocent countenance (by the way, Dios, I am a woman). I once sent a group email to about 10 people with an attachment of a photo of Chet. I wrote something like, "Hey, check this guy out...just drop dead gorgeous! Running out of space.

  • @Diosprometheus In "Deep In A Dream," (Chet's bio) there is a photo of Chet and Gerry Mulligan together. Under the photo it states, "In 1957, Baker and Gerry Mulligan tried to recapture the old chemistry on an album, Reunion, but only their mutual contempt remained. "Music requires discipline, and he (Chet) once had it," said Mulligan of his hooked partner.

  • @Diosprometheus In Chet's bio ("Deep In A Dream) bassist Jimmy Bond stated, "Some of the women who chased after Chet were gorgeous...unbelievable...he would leave with three or four."

  • @Diosprometheus Re the beating: "He finally got caught in his own game, something he never in a million years thought would happen." "Obviously, the characters at large were wise enough to realize that the best punishment for an arrogant, oh-so-confident trumpet player was to damage the only part of his body that was really worthwhile to him. RUNNING OUT OF ROOM, SEE NEXT POST.

  • @Diosprometheus (continuation of last post): Once it was realized that good old Chettie was hardly the innocent, that he had ripped off a very intolerant dealer, a plan was put in motion. It was an ordered hit to get this guy to learn the rules of the game. They were trying to say: look, you little white-ass loser, all you are is another fucking junkie.

  • @harrell222 Thanks for this added insight in his beating.

  • @Diosprometheus You are very, very welcome, Dios. Have you seen the documentary of Chet's life called "Let's Get Lost?" It is available in full on you tube. It is a great documentary and was nominated for an Oscar for the Academy Awards the year it came out. Dios, if you have a question about anything whatsoever about Chet or Art Pepper, do not hesitate to ask me. I will do the best I can to find the information you need.

  • TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN CHET BAKER'S LIFE, DO A SEARCH ON YOU TUBE FOR "DOCUMENTARY LET'S GET LOST." THIS DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE LIFE OF CHET BAKER IS FABULOUS. THE DOCUMENTARY WAS NOMINATED FOR "BEST DOCUMENTARY" AT THE OSCARS (ACADEMY AWARDS).

  • Continuation of Art Pepper's description of "Billy Wilson" (Chet Baker.)

He's a weak person. That's the way he plays. That's the way he sounds.

Art Pepper and Chet Baker were musical contemporaries and both were heroin addicts. The played together on more than a few occasions. I hope that the posts I have made here will be of interest to those who are interested in jazz musicians.

  • Billy Wilson plays like he is. When I knew him, he was young, but he was a real warm, sweet loving person. And he plays just that way. But if you listen to his tone, it never was very strong; it's pretty and kind of cracking. It's weak. And when he was faced with prison - because he was busted for using drugs - he couldn't stand it. He couldn't go because he was afraid. And when they offered him an out by turning over on somebody, he couldn't help but do it. (RUNNING OUT OF SPACE; NEW POST.

  • Art Pepper, a sax player and contemporary of Chet Baker, wrote an autobiography of his life called "Straight Life." In Pepper's bio, he described Chet Baker but refused to refer to him by his real name, calling him instead "Billy Wilson" because he did not like Chet's moral fiber and character. He wrote the following about Chet: (See my next post; I am running out of room on this post.

  • Pedido a la humanidad: Por favor desarrollen algun programa que oculte la publicidad de youtube automaticamente, desde ya infinitas gracias

  • Chet was truly talented, but that jonze really took it out of him.........

  • We ALL have our demons...

  • Dear asmallbluething, Chet was a horrible heroin addict from his very early twenties. He had a crushing heroin habit as well as an addiction for women. Chet's life was just plain bad due to his lifelong heroin habit. READ THE BIOGRAPHY OF CHET'S LIFE, "DEEP IN A DREAM." I HAVE THE BOOK AND ORDERED IT A FEW YEARS AGO FROM AMAZON.COM YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN; IT IS A REAL PAGE-TURNER. THE BOOK IS 382 PAGES. BUT AT ANY RATE, CHET'S APPETITE FOR HEROIN WAS LEGENDARY.

  • Wysmakowane muzyczno - klimatyczne cudeńko.... pełnia zachwytu :o)

  • such an amazing legend, even without his teeth.

  • A true legend.

  • I have the biography of Chet Baker (great book). Chet Baker had talent, a heavenly ethereal voice, and was drop-dead gorgeous. And yes, he was a drug addict. Not all drug addicts are bad people, but after reading Chet's biography, I have to say that he was a scumbag. He used every person that he ever met for his own selfish wants and desires and apparently did so without guilt. Another great book is Straight Life, the autobiography of Art Pepper, drug addict but decent guy.

  • @harrell222 I've not known he was drug-addicted. could you write here some more about him for those who want to know more about his life ?

  • @asmallbluething Dear A Small Blue Thing: Yes, I will write more about Chet, so hang on.

  • @asmallbluething I have the bio of Chet, "Deep In A Dream." Chet had a contemporary, a sax player named Art Pepper. Art and Chet even played together more than a couple of times. At any rate, Art Pepper wrote an autobiography and was so critical of Chet Baker (for many reasons) that he refused to mention Chet by his real name; he referred to him instead as "Billy Wilson." I am running out of room here so I will do another post.

  • this is beautiful, what an unforgettable irreplaceable talent! too bad he had such an addiction :(

  • His teeth have already fallen out due to his habit.

  • @Diosprometheus Chet's teeth did not fall out from his drug addiction. According to the biography of Chet Baker's life, Chet was beaten pretty badly up in San Francisco. He told people he was beaten by "five negroes" and then later changed the story so that it was "five white guys." It was said that Chet never told the same version of the beating twice. Most of Chet's friends quietly felt that he had probably ripped off someone's dope and the beating was the payback.

  • @harrell222 Thanks I actually knew this. I may have overstated my statement...but I thought the video shows that some of his teeth have gone missing. I may be wrong about what I saw. As I recall he lost the rest of them in the 1966 beating, and that he had to get dentures. He also had his facial muscles damaged so that he never could play as well as he did before the savage beating. Anyway thank you for setting the story straight.

  • What a find! Lars Gullin, FFS!!!!

  • minchia i denti stavano già partendo

  • Sheesh, what charisma!!!

  • @gevse

What charisma indeed. He's smashed off his nut on heroin.

  • @gevse

Not to mention had some teeth kicked in by drug dealers (you can see that around 1:30). He should be in bed with a hot toddy...

  • @mockingbirdgrrl1 that was in '66.

  • @gevse check out Wiki... chet Baker drugs.... lordy its sad

  • What a dreamboat.

  • ROMANO MUSSOLINI? shit. this really fucks me up

  • thumbs up if you agree Samuel Larsen did this 100 times better

  • @BieberLuv101

I'm sorry I wasted 2 minutes listening to Larsen put me to sleep with an interpretation that was musically inept and out-of-tune, and that sounded like he couldn't tell you what the words mean if he had a dictionary.

  • @Rajamuttu well that's your opinion, but i think Samuel did it better personally

  • yep so i was watchin the glee project, and...i got here! =)

  • Samuel brought me to this song, and i think he rocked it! <3

  • The whole band look as though they were on narcotics - peace.

  • @drtreg

    No they don't.

As if you would know what that looks like anyway, right?

  • @Rajamuttu

Why don`t you check out the details of the saxophonist Lars Gullin on Wiki?

  • @drtreg

Not one word of which shows what being on narcotics looks like.

Which is why you don't know what the "whole band" is up to, nor do you have any way of knowing from a grainy video.

Hint - is the rhythm section keeping proper time?

  • Samuel Larsen just brought me here :)

  • @LINDOUILLLE mee tooo!

  • @LINDOUILLLE haha me too but im suprised i didn't find it on my own since i tend to look up all the songs from glee project....

  • How cool is he??

  • version originale de "my funny valentinne" interpretrée par Chet Backer;magique.J'adoreeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.Bravo.

  • bonjour, hello

an other version of "my funny valentine"

  • Sad & brilliant life. It's amazing how he was still able to keep his tone both singing and playing after he lost his teeth. Loved his phrasing. He was the James Dean of Jazz but even more talented!

  • no shit his teeth got knocked out he probably used drugs to keep his mind off the pain

  • pas de clichés, for real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • he's just a punk and his singing, funk ...

  • Sadly, he looks and sounds like he's a bit impaired. Glasses give it away. Either way, a genuine talent.

  • @JeffLemucchi1 I would like to see you do better on a hand full of drugs!

  • wunderbar

  • Truth be told: He makes me sad of lost potential. BUT.... His music and voice are magic. Live long enough and this becomes the best music there is to listen to.

  • ALL THIS FROM A TROUBLED GENIUS

  • Thanks for posting this incredible video...I think I've watched/listened to it at least 30 times over the past 3 weeks!

  • Nothing to say, but I Love Youtube!!!!!

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!

  • Such concentration, I love this!

  • This is music.

  • smooth as velvet ... thanks for posting

  • amazing. btw: his teeth were knocked out later in life. that front tooth, gone here, had been missing from years earlier.

  • By 'accident' I was at a gallery on 55th between 6th and 7th in NYC... 1974(?) just when he was suprised with a beautiful new trumpet.

He picked it up and played it immediately... without teeth.

    And still had his chops...

he was given a HUGE hug after those first notes...

I ca still see the perfect moment with the sun streaming in behind him... and a woman's embrace... as she told him he was back... with her love.

    Peace... Chet.

  • @ilovewoofy Fuck you. Not funny. If thats all you have to say after watching this and the documentary then you have learned nothing about life or music or love.
