  • Good Times!. I wonder what Mae West would have sounded like in a Disco Song?

  • That voice! That dance! That's friggin' Axl Rose in drag!

  • Bring it!

  • Good Ol' Mermie was getting up there. If she wanted to model nude for Vargas, let her. If she wanted to make a disco album for the kiddies to dance to at Studio 54, let her. Old people can do whatever they want. The end. Case Closed.

  • @binstence So True.

  • JESUS! 70 YEARS OLD AND SHE CAN STILL BELT LIKE THAT! GOD BLESS HER! AND SHE'S STILL GOT HER PIZZAZZ! GOD LOVE HER! :D

  • @Punkyangel17 She's 71 actually.

  • Loved her in "It's a Mad Mad World". The mother-in-law from hell. Haha!

  • I love how in Part I she and Johnny discuss with a straight face the idea of kids dancing to this track in clubs.

That being said, the little side-stepping dance move she does is pretty damn sinuous and sexy for a 90-year-old.

  • @DorothyRoseBlancheSo she was 70 not 90

  • Strange I am 59. Yrs old also and was told I sound pretty good asEthel! I know with the right wig and learning the words I would be not bad....am male also, maybe next Halloween?

  • Woohoo, Ethel - she sure could move her booty! Not to mention singing like that at the age of 70! I actually think it's pretty darn good!

  • Go Etheo!!!

  • Assuming this was not lip synched, then she definitely still had a voice at 70!

  • I can do her voice better than she does her own voice....not sure why or how but i discovered i could impersonate her back when i was a teen...LOL...i'm a 59 year old man..

  • If you didn't see it, you'd never believe it. Look, I'm not going to say anything bad about Ethel. Fact is she never needed amplification where ever she played.

  • I wonder if the six remaining unreleased tracks from Ethel's disco album sessions will ever see the light of day?

  • Ethel Merman put out a disco album back in 1979 simply called Ethel Merman's Disco Album. This is her disco version of Alexanders Rag Time Band. I ask WHY?

  • Thanks so much! ^-^ And I love her dress here--beautiful :)

  • Fantastic! Thanks so much for posting this.

  • I think Axel Rose stole his moves from her.

  • They both stole those moves from the Monkeys' Davy Jones.

  • @grooveslinger Very good pull!! She just needs the tamborine.

  • C'mon, be honest--that was a lil painful LOL

  • Though odd... she is wonderful in this. This is a gem.

  • Johnny looks speechless.

  • Quite the dance moves. Impressive for a 70 year old lady. Scary for "disco".

  • @RickBeall

The bitch should have stayed sitting, and had her fat mouth shut. What junk!

  • @cuttock lol, it wasn't that bad, but it also also wasn't the best version of the song, which she claimed prior in the interview.

  • @DreamsCumTrue469 Teehee! I was kinda drunk when I typed that. I actually like her a lot. But now that I am sober I can honestly say...the bitch should have stayed sitting and shut her mouth!

  • @cuttock lol

  • FAN-FRICKIN-TASTIC!!!

  • wonderful and bizarre

  • 70 years old. ego, without pretense.

    you go!

  • Times have really changed!!!

    Sadly!!!

  • Ethel passed in the early 80's from a stroke caused by working too hard plus taking care of her ailing mom

  • actually she died in 1984 from a glioblastoma (brain cancer)

  • The Ethel Merman Disco Album is a gay classic.. Thank you for posting this video NealeUK.

  • Wow... this is a marvelous performance. I love disco! :)

  • I remeM ber staying up late to watch this, and how much my mom said Ethel was really good. Of coarse I had to get up early for school the next day ( my mom would also let me watch benny hill which came on late too!!)

  • Ethel was a very soulful performer live and I had the pleasure of seeing this legend a number of times in the seventies...the voice stayed strong and rich to the end and this is a priceless performance...Bravo Ethel!!!

  • I adore this video! I just love the way ethel dances and winks.

  • This is fantastic. I'ts like watching a video of Fats Waller in a porn flick wearing a muscle tee... It's like Scott Joplin breaking into Ridin' Dirty... It's like being sexually assaulted by the Marx Bros in an LA nightclub... It's the rape and degradation of an old standard in a humorous, yet distressing fashion. Maybe I wouldn't have said such strong words if she hadn't chosen to sing Alexander's Ragtime Band.

  • oh please, in the late 70's everyone was doing a ''disco'' album. Even Lawrence Welk has the beat on his albums and shows.

  • So strange that I love it!

  • 80 or 71 or 21... after all of that belting not a single strained breath! Wow!

  • why is this considered disco....i think the song came out about 50 years before disco

  • I think you missed the Wah-wah guitars.

  • Thanks. It was also cool to see a young Albert Brooks!

  • Merman + disco = genius. Merman disco is still talked about today. Good or bad, that's a legacy.

  • She wasn't 80 here, she was 71.

  • awesome. how many 80 year old women have made a disco album. fuckin' awesome.

  • Wow! Is this a joke?!?!

  • I hate to say it, but BAD pairing.

  • I luv the @I don't have change' bit

  • She was one of the people who should never have made Disco. This was just fuel for the "Disco Sucks" people.

  • This really really really really sucks.

  • @cuttock Yopu are "sucking": Cocks !!!

  • Ethel Merman+Disco is the best combination ever.

  • Thanks for posting this! This was her last Tonight Show appearance. She was never asked back after this.

  • If I may kindly ask, why wasn't she asked back? What happened?

  • According to the latest Bio of the Merm, during the break, Johnny made a crack about her almost taking off on the final note which she took as an insult. They had words and she was never asked back.

  • Thank you for the reply, jasorts. I didn't know that her and Johnny had a dispute about that. This is one of the great things about Youtube, in that you can learn inside tidbits about entertainment shows. Thanks again.
