hey, nice job! do you need that battery to play through the amp, and is it hard to switch pickups in the middle of a song?

Hi. The guitar is fully functional without the battery - that just illuminates the pickup selector: bit of a gimmick but also useful when on stage in low lighting. Good point on switching pickup mid-song - it's certainly less easy than simply flipping a switch.

would you recommend this guitar over a jackson soloist or a fender fat strat for 80's metal sounds?

I have an '80's Fender Strat and don't much rate it, to be honest. Goes out of tune easy and not very versatile. Not familiar with the Jackson's so couldn't say. The RGX A2 is an excellent guitar. It is so lightweight but has a big, beefy sound and a great fretboard. It's a breeze to play and looks cool.
