Wow , beautiful german Frau , great voice , catchy song : a pity that the horrific arrangement ruined it all along with those fazing out-of-tune bongos .....!!
Excellent arrangement, though I agree the bongos somewhat overpower the first half ... Germany could very well have done a hattrick '70-'72 as every one was a worthy winner... This is my favourite German entry of all time incidentally
I agree about the bongos! They don't fit at all to this arrangement. Bongos makes no sense in this song. Nevertheless, great melody, great singing of Mary Roos.

Although my knowledge of German is limited at best, I believe I have an idea of what you're saying here, so I have only this to say: Bitte schon, mein... eh... Irishen frienden??? (hey, at least I tried)
Vicky Leandros won the Grand Prix and I think her song was very, very good. But Mary Roos did a wonderful job for Germany. Two nice ladies with two great timeless songs!
Genial, großartiges, schade Lied, daß sie an diesem Abend da Edimburg nicht triumphiert hat, weil sie ihn verdiente, Hier in Frankreich erhielt Mary Ross in dieser Epoche eine Riesige succés...
Some trivia: when Mary Roos won the national contest in 1972, she was booed by the German audience in the TV studio because they wanted Cindy & Bert to win. Nevertheless, Mary performed bravely in Edinburgh and was a worthy representative of Germany with a beautiful song. Well done, Mary! By the way, Cindy & Bert crashed in the 1974 final with "Sommermelodie" and became last!
& hopefully its appreciation thats growing. I've listened again to Wunder Gibt... & yes I can see the thread of what your saying above. You ARE very musically astute
I've seen you make some very astute observations on songs, which I'd neve pick up on, which to me suggests a rather innate aptitude for music - but then maybe I'm a thicko when it comes to music. And Tasos has added some very interesting thought to which I cant resist the urge to comment on.
Yes, indeed, Seth, excellent remark on your behalf - I wouldn't have noticed without you saying so, but you're right, the two songs are strikingly similar (esp. the chorus)! Let me ask though - is this really so important? I'm starting to think that, as I once read in a music blog, "originality is overrated" - meaning that music fans like us often tend to value (alleged) originality over superior musical craftsmanship (cont'd)
But I guess this is a much larger discussion. What I mean to say is that stuff likr this song may be totally derivative, but its craftsmanship (arrangement, lyrics, performance - even Mary's outfit!) is up the wazoo, as they say. So, I don't think its similarity to "WUnder Gibt..." should impede one's enjoyment of it (and, in, fact, I find that this has an eastgoing, effortless flow that, for all its greatness, Katja's song didn't possess).
Very true, and an astute observation on your part. I agree, originality is overrated - I do think that good songs, no matter what the passing resemblance (hey, you can't create endless new! It just takes different people to hear similarities). What matters is, what can we do with what we have? And this is on all accounts a very good song, which I like. I'd consider any song which reminds me of "Wunder" a strong one!
Given that I started out as a greater Mary Roos 72 fan than either of you I feel pleased that it appeals to you both more.I think your comparison of the two songs & what makes them good really resonates. All 3 German songs 70-72 are very much at the zenith of Germany in ESC.
Yes, a very strong hat-trick indeed. Actually, the Germans do have a right to complain, since for all their long ESC history (they have participated in EVERY contest except '96 - no other country can claim that!) and numerous zeniths in terms of quality, they have only won it once. I wonder why this is - maybe the fact that, to a foreigner, the German language doesn't have the flow of, say, Frech or Italian? Maybe a matter of different musical tastes? Or just bad luck?
And T. what a brilliant caveat. I would say the similarity is important insofar they illustrate quality IMO. And you've also touched a very poignant point for me. Listening to peoples comments on YT makes me think that my tastes often lack originality that I like songs that resemble those from the past. But somewhere inside I always maintain that where songs conform to qualities I consider good then originality is not the issue.
Yes, this is precisely what I mean. Don't get me wrong, I do like it when I hear sth I haven't heard before, but in the end, it's more the quality of a song, and not its originality, that makes it timeless (for proof, see how Burt Bacharach, the Carpenters etc. have now been re-appreciated). IMO, breakthroughs that have stood the test of time (from the Beatles onwards) did so because they supported an equally strong talent for melody etc, and it wasn't originality for originality's sake.
I echo all that. And indeed I was also thinking of the ABBA team and how they took sounds & rehsaped them into great song after great song or similarly with ALW. Lets hope he can pull that out of the hat for UK 09.
adjusts cravate)... one certainly appreciates the gravity of the majestic overtones & simplicity of the simplicity of itself rather like... one's head up one's arse.....get the message? ;P
What do you mean? Especially from '75 onwards, France literally could not do wrong in that decade. In fact, it isn't until in '85 when I'll truly dislike a French song.
Tasos, yet another great quality upload that brought me right back to 1972. This song is so good, one of Germany's best & IMO the better of Mary's 2 songs.
A good song indeed - another one that's taken me some time in getting used to. Not one of my faves from that year, personally, but still a great song and performance. Indeed a strong start to the contest.
It's not one of my biggest faves either (we'll get to them later, since I'll be uploading the whole year), but it's a song I really appreciate - and its 3rd place looks totally justified to me.

Sehr schöner Gesang!
Hervor-ragende Komposition!

Italy actually went on to host the contest again in 1991 the year after Toto Cutogno had won when he & Gilgliola Cinquetti were the presenters.
ESCsince1968 2 years ago
Now you make me very confuse: the singer who presented the festival in 1991 also won the festival? Is that what you are saying?
captatnonmuscas 2 years ago
No, what he's actually saying is that the 1991 contest was presented by the singer who had won in 1990, Toto Cotugno. Hope this makes more sense.
