  • HOLLY MOLLY!!!

    this is MAD SHIT!!

i am proud of us humans! we are smart (=

  • @absba9 you can thanks whites and asians. that's all

  • @BrendanIsCool

    i will. You spelling moron!!

  • @absba9 I added an s. You did not capitalize the "I" before will, there should have been a comma instead of a period, the "y" in you should be lowercase, and a "spelling moron" is grammatically erroneous. Who's a dumb cunt now?

  • @BrendanIsCool

    Very amusing!!

  • what was the music at the beginning?

  • Whatever your religious views, one fact remains. The world is grotesquly over populated and becoming more so by the second. If we can't sort that out, then the ´future is bleak.

  • Actually that is incorrect. It is overpopulated in some areas. The bigger problem is that the world's population and resources are mis-managed.

  • so god writes a shitty code, full of errors and viruses, and then expects us to figure it out and fix it? and this was his plan all along?

sounds like a fucking lazy god if you ask me.

  • imagine one day you create perfect 3D world with bots that are aware that are alive and they won't believe that you exist.

    HAhaha.

  • @spacecowboy95 ...no one asked you

  • by the way the music for this interview sounds like the one in World of Warcraft

  • i suggest you guys both meditate on scripture

  • the authors of the Bible were divinely inspired

im sure God took into account of our present times when he orchestrated the Bible. Allegories in the bible are usually explained like the case of jesus's parables. Genesis account of creation would seem to be allegorical if not due to the fact that it is referenced alot throughout scripture. for instance, even Moses refers to the creation of the world in 6 days in Exodus. 20. anyways not to continue the debate,

  • wow wow wow

here i am writting a paper over creationism vs evolutionism

and i find this long debate under Francis Collins

haha funny you guys need to remember what Paul said to Timothy about such argumentative behavior.

anyways not to leave you guys hanging i will say this: to accurately understand the Bible, it would be wise to study the culture of times. In fact study the Greek and hebrew. However, do not, i repeat, DO NOT lol say something is allegorical unless scripture indicates so

  • The fool says in his heart there is no God!

  • A real conundrum: Dr. Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project, highly respected scientist, having unimpeachable scientific credentials, is (gasp) a believer in God? And, oh dear, a follower of Jesus Christ! How can this be?

  • Shame the bible has a clear geneology showing a line of men from adam to jesus lasting only 4k years.. Add 2007 years on to that and your bible thinks man was created 6k years ago. Oh and Noahs flood occured 3k years ago.. Sorry your bible is bollocks accept it.

  • Shame that you aren't familiar with some of the outstanding theological and scientific defenses that have given reasonable explanations for your reasonable critique.

  • I know genesis 1 says that the earth and plants were made before the Sun! Defend that!! Science contradicts your bible in so many places it is laughable.

  • Interesting. So I looked in the Christian Bible to observe this, but I think theres something missing. If theres an all-powerful God, then what prevents him from creating a temporary light source besides the sun (the source referenced in verse 3) and then creating the sun later? Interesting. I'd like to look more into this.

  • Why would god create a 'temporary' light source before he made the sun! Was he too tired to make the sun at that point? Was the sun shop shut untill day 3? It certainly does not fit with a all knowing all powerful being now does it.

  • Genisis is hardly literal.

  • @grazon Time and chance can not produce the Information needed for one single protein, Learn Homochirality!

  • Ha! what a laughable statement smurfmash. why? because this very genetisist is one of the top apologetics and i think he is a bit (by which i mean a lot) more intelligent than you! i think he can dismantle your silly argument with surprising ease:)

  • Well if he is smarter than me, it doesn't stop him deluding himself. Also if we are talking IQ, I doubt someone who spells 'Geneticist' as 'genetisist' should really ever stick his head up in an IQ pissing contest. Do you? Idiot. But then all bible bashers are. Only dumb people could believe in literal genesis.

  • smurfmash I think you mean, "Bible thumpers." "Bible bashers," would apply to someone who opposes, Sacred Scripture. And you should probably want to qualify, "literal genesis." Both cosmological models have a genesis, but if by "genesis," you mean "Genesis," then your criticism should be one of proof rather than belief. As for the "if", the question of Collins "possibly" being smarter than you...Come now...Really? Instead of IQ, think DNA, and you'll have your proof as it were.

  • Thumpers or bashers... both are terms relating to "hitting". Brits say "bashers" it is a cultural difference. See urban dictionary.

    "bible basher

A religious person who is obsessivily you could say, and insanely into his or her religion. They tend to 'bash on' about their religion and try to feed it to you. "

As for genesis... the context should make it simple enough for even you to suss out which version I mean. You fail.....

  • smurfmash

I could "suss out", one meaning or another, but the point of your reply was to enhance the importance of specificity, correct?

Couldn't you have "sussed" that nuance out before slipping yet again?

Attending to cultural specificity while banging on about intellectual integrity - you might want to take your intended target audience (Evangelical Americans and the like) and use the more readily identifiable, "thumpers."

    Urban Dictionary...If that's your standard...

    Epic fail...

  • Well I didn't think you understood due to your misinterpretation... So I decided to spoon feed you a little more. I am sorry next time I will use terms that stupid Americans can understand. You are right I should understand my less than intelligent target audience.

  • smurfmash, That you actually believe you are anywhere near Dr. Collins...That there is a lingering doubt as to whether or not he - an American - is more intelligent than you, is beyond comedy...It's pathetic.

That you didn't "suss" the nuance of targeting American audiences (See Dr.Collins) as an obvious jab, demonstrates you don't have the slightest clue.

Hitchens and Dawkins wont be pleased to see one of their parrots appearing deluded in plain exchange now will they?

    Voila.

  • hewbrew geneologies has been known to use the term "father" to mean "ancestor." There could be many untold generations in between. Especially in between Cain and Noah. Also, Genesis is a poem. It was hardly literal. And attacking the part when God created two great lights on a "day" that wasn't the first day is assuming the story was told in order. The Bible also claims God perceives a "day" differently than humans. Bottom line: Bible wasn't trying to teach evolution or the big bang.

  • yes that's right the most important fundamental part of your bible which explains how god made everything was in the wrong order, a different time frame and the method was completely different. And thats just fine is it? How can you switch off your logic and reason just to believe in this laughable book?

  • The Genesis account is in no way the most important and fundamental part of the Christian Bible. That would be the Gospels. Your argument only causes a problem for someone who agrees a literal interpretation of the Bible. The first chapter of Genesis was a poetic treatment of creation.

  • Yeah none of the bible is literal, Jesus didn't really die, (wasn't that suicide by the way? as he could have prevented it) The flood never happened, jesus never existed, he never walked on water etc etc. It's all made up not just genesis! Why can you accept one section is codshit and not the rest? Genesis IS the most important part. It is HOW god created EVERYTHING. If that is less important than the books written by men later on I think you are deluded. Worship paul!

  • This is going nowhere since your basic argument is that you think your own interpretation of Christianity is wrong. If you're not gonna bother with actually talking about accepted theology and doctrine (instead of your own perceived notions of what you think our theology and doctrine ought to be), than there is no point. But FYI, Salvation is the singularly most important aspect of Christianity. Otherwise there is no point to the rest of the Christian Bible.

  • Last point, self-sacrifice is different from an act of suicide.

  • He chose to die.... Sounds like suicide to me... But hey lets face it when did torture and blood sacrifice ever resolve anything? You religion is just one step up from the aztecs!!

  • Sorry, I don't like to be argumentitive over semantics, especially when the comparisons are ludicrous. Come back when you're ready to do anything other than to pick a fight , THAT resolves nothing.

  • Semantics... IE how to interpret the bible... I take it as it reads. You make up alterate meanings to black and white text so that it doesn't sound silly..

  • I'm sorry, we weren't arguing over semantics of the Bible. We were arguing over what suicide and self-sacrifice is defined. And what was left of the stuff you said was aimed at provocation. I don't see a reason for me to continue quibbling with you on your opinions, if mine won't even be on the table, in fact you take the table away before I can even say them.

  • Even if you take the Bible as it reads, you will notice that it never said Jesus committed "suicide" the way you put it. And you would also need background, such as the fact that in near Eastern cultures, the term "Father" is used to mean "Ancestor" and the the term "Elohim" is honorary, not literally plural, etc. You can take it as it reads, but if you do not have the credentials of historical and cultural context to interpret it as best as you can, you're interpretation ends up be silly.

  • "but if you do not have the credentials of historical and cultural context to interpret it as best as you can" Of course you need to be an expert in order to understand all the different ways the bibles absurdities and mistakes have been replaced with completely different meanings. It's called deluding ones self. Biblical 'experts' have just turned it into a art form!

  • provide a specific example that illustrates your argument.

  • Too many to count! One example would be the biblical geneology which shows very clearly a 6k time frame from adam to noah. Another would be the moon described as a "light" when it is purely a reflection from the suns light. Global flood is turned into allegory, Genesis days turned into "time periods" etc etc. i could go on for days. Basically the bible has so many holes that to plug them all you have to be a moron or a deluded genius.

  • Adam to Noah isn't "clear." Nor what occurred from Noah to the sudden emphasis on Abram from Ur of the Chaldeans. Again, father means ancestor in their culture. I doubt that the moon as a reflection would have been understood by the ancient nomads. It was probably difficult enough to learn that they were merely objects and not god-ridden chariots. Genesis was a poem with a specific structure. There was morning and evening before the sun was created and God needed "resting" apparently...

  • to the ancients, the sun and moon are lights, and meteors are "falling stars." Such language is poetic and are often figures of speech. Genesis rhymed in its original text, it also had meters and repetitions creating the "days" of its motif. to criticize it as full of "holes" is to limit its artistry. It seems that you would not be satisfied unless the Bible described the rapid inflation of the Universe after the Big Bang or the food web accurately.

  • providing us with scientific knowledge wasn't the point of the revelations from God recorded in the Bible.

  • Clearly!! Instead he gave you a bullshit version of events that did not even occur in the right order. In fact Genesis is SO wrong that it is almost a deliberate deception! But then goat herders didn't know about physics when they wrote the bible did they! OOOH THE MOON GLOWS! IT MUST GIVING OFF ITS OWN LIGHT!

  • Basically when it gets the point where you need a page of explaination for each wrong bit in the bible. Explaining that they are not literal or don't mean what they say. You should really understand that it is all bollocks and you are trying so hard to make square blocks go into round holes.

It's codshit! Stop trying to rewrite the entire bible so that it doesn't read as codshit! IT IS WRONG. IT IS IMORAL (or do you like slavery, genocide, homophobia, and rape?) And it contradicts itself

  • Actually a "whole page" is not remotely enough. Anything short of an entire discipline of interpreting the Bible results in wide-spread mis-information, as exemplified by your views. You've also returned to your attack-mode again. You just keep on dismissing my point: that cultural and historical context is crucial to understanding the Bible (and pretty much everything else). Unfortunately, I try not to pick fights so... Good bye.

  • "You just keep on dismissing my point: that cultural and historical context "

Seeing as basically nothing the bible says is backed up by any historical evidence. I do not see where outside historical context would help. You need to be an expert to read it huh? I thought it was made for all man, not a few educated preachers. You bible is laughable unless you decide to alter EVERYTHING it says.

  • Why did you get so upset when gariadara just debating your point of view? The Bible has allot a historical evidence, go to the British Museum before you make such a comment, as for stories like the flood thats up to you, but I suggest you look into the Babylonian epic of gilgmesh , you might say that the bible was based on this - but I see it the other way around. As for Jesus - I have done much research and I've come to conclusion that he is a REAL historical character.

  • Moron! "the Babylonian epic of gilgmesh , you might say that the bible was based on this - but I see it the other way around" Well as babylon PRE DATES Jesus it would be a bit hard to base gilgamesh on something that would happen in the future now wouldn't it. You utter retard. You prove again why christians are so dumb.

  • I know that I was pointing it out as an Gilgamesh as an example, it can be seen both ways round. I have ALSO researched the historical Jesus and like allot of other historians believe he was a REAL historical character

  • And further to your comment I would like to say that I am open minded to both science and religion I have read many books on science, history and religion inc. the Origin of the Species and the Bible - which a majority who critise have not. BTW Dr Collins is a Christian are you calling him dumb?

  • anyone who really believes the christian doctrine by definition must be slightly stupid.

that goes for newton as well, who though alchemy was a serious science.

  • @whatifgodexists Perhaps not dumb, but a dual-minded mumma's boy?

  • @Boy192...you should have wrote...mumma'sboy192

  • @creeman007 Classic.

  • As a person who is going into Medicine and a person who has faith, I find Francis Collins to be a wonderful man who can put the 2 together to show that there is a God. He is able to reconcile the fact that science is not to show that God doesn't exist, but in fact science gives Glory to God because is shows the evidence of God's power. God Bless you Dr. Collins!!

  • Amen to that 2177!

  • francis collins is an inspiration to christians who dont want to be creationists

  • wow... that's a good quote man, i'm stealing that... lol

  • I agree, Matt!

  • A God fearing Scientist. Bravo!

  • What is the music that's playing?

  • Neptune the mystic. It's from The Planets by Holst.

  • Thanks.

  • @toowoombaus Time and chance can not produce the Information needed for one single protein, atheists need to Learn Homochirality!

  • Neptune. The Mystic. He's right. But we didn't need to wait until FC came along to know how to cure the dreaded diseases of our time. Cancer is a low tech disease, not a complicated genetic one as we would be led to believe. Pancreatic enzymes dissolve cancer cells like saliva on cotton candy. Heart disease is easy too, just eat more eggs. Lots of eggs. Any way you like. Eat what evolution designed you to eat.

  • Francis Collins is my hero

  • Me too!
