We can only speculate what caused his mood changes. But, he starved for years; that in itself can change a person's moods, and health, and outlook, even in a chemical way. Vincent also struggled to be accepted and never got acceptance, from friends, from neighbors, or from the art world. He sometimes licked his fingers which might contain chemicals used to clean his brush. Then he (also) might've had a form of epilepsy which causes mood swings and blackouts. Or maybe he was just sensitive...
@supersaint1970 ok well supposedly im bi polar and i dont see how that is anything like what i have. and i've seen others with more extreme bi polar than me and it's nothing like that either. so i'm not convinced that is what he had
@supersaint1970 Fucking thank you. If you've been called bipolar and can't relate to the life of Van Gogh then you are one of the gullible multitudes misdiagnosed. Stop giving these people your money.
One kiss does not a homosexual make. Also, if Van Gogh *was* gay, it wouldn't mean he wasn't an incredible fucking artist. Also, IT'S A GODDAMN MOVIE.
What is sad is the fact that there are roughly 900 letters from Vincent to gather the facts...yet Altman chose to make up that kiss thing. Good movie overall but Vincent was far from gay. One of the most genuine artists of all time.
Van Gogh clearly was not gay. He dreamed of going into the priesthood and at that time homosexuality would have been considered a mortal sin. seeing that we have thousands of letters written by vincent to various people and this was never discussed or touchede upon leads me to believe this is pure dramatization
@scottysoxfan lol i think saying he was going into priest hood is not helping........ even if it was illegal cause fact is, it still is illegal.......
Recomendo o excelente filme "Sede de viver" ("Lust for life"-1956) do diretor Vincete Minnelli, e com o Kirk Douglas.
@DecayingOrange yea it did, Vincent threatened Gaugin with a razor blade apperently, --not a knife and then Gaugin left. and yea the Yaoi shit is fucked up. -.-
Genius and some madness often go hand in hand, not strange, if your brilliant and have to much thoughts on your minds, more and other then let,s say regular, the brain overloads and body and brain are connected a human being is a soci-psyco somatic unit, that means body, brean and social life influence eachother. Vincent was not only a painter but also a philosofer. The letters he wrote were never simplistic and he spoke 4 languages even taught math,German and French in English in Ramsgate-UK
The guy who plays Vincent? That's Tim Roth. You most likely recognize him from the TV show Lie to Me (Cal Lightman), The Incredible Hulk (The Abomination), Reservoir Dogs (Mr. Orange) or Pulp Fiction (Pumpkin). Those are his most well-known roles. If it's not one of those that you recognize him from, you could do a search on IMDb for him to find out which of his movies you're thinking of.
I'd wish this wasn"t titled "The gay kiss" which would make people think Tim is gay. This kiss is a deadly one. Vincent wants to hurt him. Wladimir Yordanoff as Paul Gauguin is excellent in this film and looks quite young and handsome. Does anyone remember this line" But there is real life here! and God is here! God is in everything except in church! and expect in our bloody family! Any fan of this film should know this powerful line by Tim.
Just want to invite all gay short film lovers to watch my flm :Tunel Russo (on utube). Film about the police brutality in dealing with a gay kiss on the streets of Rio. Just click the nick or do a search. .See ya!
Well, based on what I've heard, it was paint thinner/turpentine/mineral spirits. Yet another one of his attempts to try and kill himself :( Poor Vincent. So sad.
Vincent has always been my favorite artist of all time, even as a little kid. I just love how Tim Roth portrayed him so well. Just reading about his life and watching this movie makes me wish I could have lived in his time and have done something to help him out :( Poor Vincent didn't have many friends, I know how that feels.
it,s the movie Vincent and Theo but this is Vincent and Paul Gaugain, just before he left. Vincent was a desparate man, when he got someone on in high regard he could not let go and did desperate things, the cutting of of his ear lumb was not the only time he self mutulated :( he punished himself all the time, even for his art,2 weeks living on bread and coffee to pay for paint etc,he distroyed himself for his art and when he shot himself it took 2 day,s before he died, still had a strong heart

Van Gogh wasn't gay, but the kiss to Gauguin I think was an attempt to signify his madness and desperation. He was also very lonely.
