  • the quality of this video was very bad but kiris voice excels all others who have tried to sing this song with the emotions it deserves. we have all im sure had one true love in our live and this song brings all of this to mind. well done kiri butt boo to youtube for quality of video

  • Why do people keep comparing Madame Kitty with Susan Boyle.

    I like them both.

They have different voices Madame Kiri Te Kanawa's life had a better opportunieties in life than Susan Boyle.

I just enjoy them both exactly because they are different.

And I don't appreciate people putting down Susan Boyle because she has her own voice and it is her gift alone period.

Madame Kiri Te Kanawa will always be one of my favorite sopranos.

  • Vocally, in this performance, she doesn't qualify to clean Susan Boyle's shoes!

Yes, I know she's been famous for years, but she needs to stick to music where it doesn't matter if your voice warbles all over the place, and where there are no real feelings to be expressed. I wonder if she can produce steady clear notes.

I thought I would like her singing, but she was awfully bad. Maybe she could get a role in "Cats."

I admit she sings better than I do, but can't compare to Susan"s best.

  • This is the person that said Susan Boyle wasn't at her level?...bah...this sounds like crap.

  • Sheesh! So much vitriol over two singers and a comparison of their voices. How puerile. Why can't people just agree to disagree, agreeably. Unfortunately, youtube is, much too often, just a venue for this kind of inane invective.

  • she has a permanent frown

  • Really not suited to her voice..

  • you commented on idad being wrong, first, their is no country called Macedonia. It's official name is :The Republic Of Macedonia, and susan sold more in week 1 in the usa than skopje has population. i have heard better noises from cattle having sex in a field than kiri singing this song. as sir cameron mcintosh said, no one owned idad until susan boyle sang it. he knows better than you since he is the producer of les mis in london. i love this with you joe, it is like taking candy from a baby

  • Barman Joe, thanks for the reply you sent me, if i had known your iq was that of a tin of peas i would not have commented in the first place, jeesh do they come more stupid than you., i doubt it.your ears are as much use as the brain you have, all around the world susan has wiped the floor with this karaoke has been your cloth ears call a singer.look at all the comments on here, not even close you lunatic, at least you made us laugh with your stupidity. you should be traded in for a pet chimp

  • This is definitely not her song. All over the place. I'm afraid Susan Boyle owns this one by far !...

  • @fjbutch Are you serious? Get a fricken life!!! And before you tell me I support Kiri because I'm from New Zealand, I may live in New Zealand but came from Macedonia, so there goes that. Mark these words: At her best Susan can't come even 100 000 miles close to Kiri's singing ablility that she has in her little finger. Good bye, get your ears checked or if nothing is wrong with them, go and comment on who is better in building a wooden cabinet instead of who's better at singing.

  • No "goosebumps" here! Unfortunately the orchestration on this rendition is over blown, intrusive, way-to-fast and ultimately preposterous. All of the tragedy and elegance is lost as the orchestra ends up competeing with the singer instead of supporting her and some sort of bombastic race to the end ensues. Miss Te Kanawa is not in her milieu with this and it shows...

Check out Randy Graff's version to see how it was meant to be sung.

  • this voice fill up my feeling

  • Without any musical knowledge,I can say that her version is one of the best.!

  • You would be mistaken, (re the previous comment by ellespa2004). Dame Kiri did not change keys at all. Learn to recognize when a singer moves into chest voice, mixed voice and head voice. There is no key change.

  • How does what kind of a voice you move into have to do with change of keys?

  • Why was Kiri jumping key??? It sounded like she couldnt reach the notes in one key so decided half way throught the song(((( TWICe)))) in actual fact,, to change key.... Strange rendition, I have to admit that i prefers Susan Boyle's rawness of the song, it went straight to my heart....

  • I love Kiri but this was disappointing.

  • As for all those that musicians, I do know she has a Powerful voice with a great technique , i don't need music LECTURES , I am just adressing to the audiance in general, the ones who don't understand about music, Kri has no Soul, that's all, not questiong her voice, she HAD a great voice but...souless, just listen to the young Diana Damrau, then take your conclusions. Sorry Ms. Te Kanawa, i never thought you were so cold and rude. Bye, don't come back to my country.

  • Please, wherever you go sing, do not disrespect other singers, you aren't the BEST,no one is. You are not young and your voice is well not getting better, you had your time, Diana Damrau is the Best of the Bests, Natalie Dessay the same, this is only to remember you that voice doesn't last for many years if you understand what I mean, you were a Soprano, then the voice keeps lowering till you don't have it anymore. There's always someone to REPLACE you.

  • Well Mrs. Te Kanawa, I've heard you live for 3 times, last year I heard you and you were very very RUDE to the press and to us. You don't know MARISA??? She won the English AWARD for the Best Singer of the YEAR for 2 and you don't know her??? She was singing with you here in Lisbon and you didn't know her??? And were saying to our press and looking from above that you didn't know her...I even had your autograph, well...I've trashed all of your CDs. Diana Damrau RULES OPERA NOW

  • shot nice to hear a kiwi spin!!

  • I love Kiri Te Kanawa, this is definitely better than Susan Boyle!

  • No. I do not think so.

  • Not by a long shot. Too short and choppy. like she was in a hurry to finish. no real soul.

She is good, but not to be compared with Susan Boyle. They are in a different class. Kiri is seemingly higher in a professional sense, but Susan's presentation was full of soul, because she was living the dream that seemed to have died. She could, therefore, sing with true conviction and a different level of reality.

  • Only an uneducated person would ever suggest that someone like Susan Boyle is in any way better than Dame Kiri. Susan would have to have sung her whole life to ever come close to the quality of Dame Kiri's single note. Nothing personal, but by putting through some mere amateurs Simon Cowell and company have created this madness over some mediocre singers who were at the right place at the right time. This video is a separate world from all of that. There is no comparison!!!!

  • I heartily agree, Dame Kiri had years and years of professional training. Hers is a completely different style and I love this particular version. It's no wonder she is a favourite of the Royal Family, remembering she was asked to sing at Prince Charles and Lady Dianas wedding

  • @barmanjoe

hmmmmmm,so by your ridiculous definition 350 million people are uneducated, 10 million who bought the cd are uneducated, sir cameron mcintosh director of les mis, mick jagger, and those who voted susans songs the best versions ever of IDAD ,Wild horses and cry me a river are uneducated, boy it must suck to have a mind like yours, and the 80% to 20% who voted for susan over kiri in NZ .Kiris IDAD is garbage compared to susan. Mediocre would be being kind to to kiri if IDAD is her best

  • @andyb601 If choosing Susan over an international opera sensation yes they are uneducated, I don't care how many million people bought CD's and who stood behind Susan, I didn't buy her CD, because I have ears, and they tell me that she is a joke. You call yourself educated yet instead of calling the song I dreamed a dream, it 's now become IDAD, get a life!!! And that last comment about Kiri's version being garbage you prove your ignorance and your inability to hear something good. Susan shouts!

  • @Evangelander Dame Kiri=great singer and professional...Susan Boyle=good singer and amateur.

  • @Tuxster3 She's not an amateur any more. Suggest you listen to version of 'Autumn Leaves', WOWWWWWWW

  • @dossery100 Actually, her vocal technique classifies her as an amateur to me.

  • @Tuxster3 Why so meanspirited to a 'National Treasure?. The little lady has risen from obscurity to be a global superstar and all true Brits should be proud of her. By the way ,Dame Kiri sounds dreadful here. Give me Susan's dulcet tones any day.Kindest regards, even to a 'snob' ,like you!

  • @dossery100 I don't think I'm being a "snob". I'm just pointing something out that rings true for me.

She's an amateur. I may even grant you that she's a very good amateur - but she's an amateur nonetheless.

Surely, you have to agree that Dame Kiri is much, much more accomplised and that she has a greater and much more accomplished vocal technique?

  • @Tuxster3You are comparing Apples and Pears. Of course Dame Kiri is the more accomplished and technically a better singer. Of course she is, she being doing it long enough. However, even in only 3 years you can argue that SB has had a far bigger effect on the world than DK has. At least half the worlds population know who SB is, only a tiny fraction know of DK. I don't hate DK I just don't like her version of IDAD, nor did I like her sneering dismissal of Susan. She got that very wrong indeed!

  • @dossery100 A far bigger effect on the world? Hmm...methinks ye doth protest too much.

I like to think I'm a member of the world, but she's had absolutely no effect on me.

As far as people not knowing of Dame Kiri, that's like saying people don't know about Mongolian throat singing. Each genre is an acquired taste.

Of course, you'd grant that many people don't like opera, so naturally, they wouldn't know of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, no?

  • @Tuxster3 You say Susan's an amateur! Well how many other amateurs do you know that have half the LSO as a backing band? Moreover ,Susan is a millionairess at least 20 times over. She earns this mainly through her music ,so I think that technically makes her a professional ,if nothing else does. Kindest regards!

  • @Tuxster3 Now I don't want to put 'the boot in', but I will do anyway.Lets face it ,Sony would 'die in a ditch' to keep Susan on their label ,but they would not cross the corridor to sign Dame Kiri. Now that maybe sad ,and unfair ,but it is the TRUTH and sometimes the TRUTH hurts.

  • @dossery100 The truth? Perhaps.

However, you do realize that SB is now a part of popular culture, and that any record company worth its salt - if record companies can ideed be salty - would love to sign because she's a cash cow, so to speak. She would bring in a lot of money courtesy of buyers who don't know any better. Sort of like Paul McCartney and his so-called classical music. People that NEVER listened to classical before, suddenly began seeking him out his music.

  • @Tuxster3 I'm enjoying this spat! You say you're not a 'snob', but you manifestly are. You clearly look down your nose on 'Joe Public' who ,by and large, like popular artists and ,by and large ,do not like opera. According to you we know no better. Well I've got news for you ,I have sat through 4 hours of Iada and after 20 minutes, was bored stiff ,as I suspect most of the 'posers' around me were. Most ,were there ,only to be seen - nothing else!

  • @Evangelander agreed...however, listen to Kiri sing Mozart/Strauss/Schubert. Her crossover repertoire isn't her strong point.

  • They sing with a totally different technique. Where Kiri uses her head register, Susan belts the higher parts, which makes her voice very strong and powerful - I think musical is not the place for Belcanto voices (except for, maybe, Christine's part in The Phantom of the Opera).
