The three triangles are the good power from the cutscene at the beggining of the game, after you type in your characters name. Its called the "Triforce", according to LOZ legend, Link has one, Zelda has one and Ganondorf has one. The picture of "You" or "Link" is also at the end of that beggining cutscene...

What happened in the beginning was that the windfall map with the pirate ship is a completely different area than the normal windfall map, so that black out basically teleported you to the new windfall map.

Actually, this game is pretty much the beginning of Link's timeline, but due to time travel, it actually takes place hundreds of years after the other games.
