  • I miss the days when all you needed to rock mightily was a flute and a codpiece.

  • Valeu meu camarada...igualmente...Jethro Tull é o tal...abços

  • It doesn't get any better than this!

  • I needed to be aware of the exact shape of Ian's buttocks. I'm a girl and have loved him since I was 13. He rescued me from this world - thank you, Ian!!!

  • @TheJackinthegreen I find myself in complete agreement with you. Damn, what an utterly spectacular creature.

  • This is definitely one of the top 5 Tull songs.

  • Where can I get a Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond Signature Fender ? Or a suit for that matter ? Sheer class!

  • @eckie4679 A friend of mine who used to roadie for tull in the early seventies has a striped suit and bass from those days. It was given to him from the band. He also introduced me to the band and I was backstage and a personal guest of the drummer Barriemore Barlow for a gig in Buffalo in 76. Ah memories....

  • Ian Anderson is one of the last most prolifics song writers ever, I discovered JT at age thirteen, now at fortyseven still enjoy those great songs. Long live Jethro Tull!!!

  • This was one of Tull's more underappreciated albums, and Martin Barre is one of the more underappreciated Rock guitarists. These guys were as popular as any band was in the Seventies. Don't know why they're not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with their amazing discography!

  • jeffrey!

  • me, too dude...and 3 times in the 1970s, as well (Philly, Hersheypark and an outdoor gig...)

  • If I could go back in a time machine....I was lucky enough to see them three times in the 70's, but I still want to go back!

  • Ian I love your codpiece!

  • its called a "codpiece" . A jockstrap worn on the outside to highlight a noblemens private parts. All the rage in the 16th century

  • its not complete version

  • what the hell is he wearing?

  • Jeffrey caught each after a single bounce on the stage & began to juggle the zebra shit. Ian then made a joke repeating the phrase zebra shit, as a reference to the joke of repeating Hammond's last name. I'll never forget that. Would you?

  • In the Houston show the fake female zebra flirted with Jeffrey & followed him about on the stage for several seconds, batting her dramatically long lashes longingly, obviously enamored with his striped suit. Ian narrated a strange & sad tale about this unrequited attraction until Jeffrey faced the creature, who later about faced, presenting her tail straight up at attention.. As Jeffrey leaned in for a closer look, the zebra squeezed out 3 spheres, one-by-one.

  • I like Hammond a lot... but Glasscock was a far better Bass player.

  • martin barre and the gibson sg. priceless.

  • the studio version is incredible but this is napalm quality. absolutely killer.

  • My husband warmed up in the band on the Minstrel Tour. Barriemore is not really Barriemore either. Just Barrie.

  • Saw them in 1970 at Gerry Park in Montreal.Best concert ever.

  • I have a T shirt with his best wishes written by him during a live show!

  • Lars blows...thats the metal I'm talking about

  • I'm guessing the bass player did a few lines b4 the show..could be wrong but it was! 1975......MAN, I LOVE YOUTUBE

  • Saw this show in Seattle. Ian was at the top of his game. Lots of great music was to follow but when I remember the heyday of Tull, this is the era that comes to mind. "And who was I to last forever? I didn't promise to stay the pace..." Still, at the time, he was like a god to me! His music has spoken to me throughout my life like that of no other artist.

  • Best Band Ever created !!! #1 in my all time favorite Bands !!!

  • Jeffery - the greatest progressive bass player

Maby Squire is faster, Geddy is more dominant, but Hammond's bass lines are very unique and melodic and he has the most beatiful tone ever (its all in the fingers) up front but yet, lots of groung.

For me, he's one of the greatests

  • I saw this concert in Charleston WV, of all places. For those who saw the show or didn't, Ian said every band has it's gimmick and Tulls gimmick was zebra shit. Then a fake zebra came onstage and proceded to produce striped ping pong balls which Ian through out into the crowd. For me it was the best concert ever!

  • Jeffrey was very active, considering how shy he's supposed to be. I love the bass and the suit.

  • Jeffrey is the Zebra God

  • as a young black male in the early sixties i discovered jt, and was quickly shunned by my friends in the neighborhood, dallas,tx. my mom dropped me off from age 12 to attend every tull concert that came to the area. this was a sacrifice for her, money was tight, but she understood.

  • @smacksie47 First time I saw Tull was during this tour in Seattle. Absolutely brilliant lineup, and smacksie, i can understand what you went through except in reverse. I was a poor white kid who lived Motown soul, the Philly sound, east bay funk, and none of my friends could understand.

  • @smacksie47 ...Amazing, I was the poor black kid in Philly...into Jethro Tull, ELP, Zappa, Hendrix....the chicks just stopped comin over, man...it was rough.

LOL...i know what ya went thru....

ahh...the internet is beautiful...when you can still find this great music....

  • @smacksie47 Jethro tull played dallas texas in the mid 60s? I didnt know he was in united states early mid 60s

  • @smacksie47 that's cool as hell!

  • saw em at Glasgow Apollo on this tour, brilliant

  • ....codpiece almost steals the show....

  • Oh so love it....

  • @AlanCBrown

It was Glenn Cornick on Bouree, Jeffrey wasn't in until the Aqualung album

  • Great up, thanks a lot!

  • Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond, best bass player of all time!

  • They are not really playing right? Just a 35mm promo shoot for the record?

  • This one time at band camp...

  • Is that a flute in his codpiece or is Ian Anderson just happy to be rocking out?

  • Jeffrey was a real "spectacle" on the stage. Not like Martin :D

  • I saw tull in 1976 ian would tease the crowd with his flute like it was his cock.

    flawless concert.

  • I think Ian Anderson must have borrowed that outfit he is wearing from Freddie Mercury.

  • Dont you mean the other way around? Ian Anderson was far more a great showman and had far more tallent than freddie Mercury could ever have.

  • Early Tull, such as this, was scorned by churches, going so far as to claim that Ian might be the Anti-Christ. When listening to say, Hymn 43 or My God and a few others, they might have been right. There music was so different than anything else at the time, it's amazing. Before I first heard Tull, I was a John Denver fan, when I heard "Bungle in the Jungle" I was hooked. Such a radical switch in music will warp a persons mind. Like the Beatles of the 60's no one matchs Tull in the 70's.

  • Anything that threatens their authority is 'scorned by churches'. This is why they deemed many rock bands satanic or whatever drivel they could come up with...

  • Man, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond rocks a lot playing the bass lines for this song...

  • You are lucky.. I'm in USSR waiting this live for +_ 30 years ( in Vilnius -Lithuania TJ play gig in 2005)

  • I saw a show in Jackson, Tn. on this tour when I was in high school. Still remains in the top 3 concerts of my life, maybe #1. Amazing the shows they did, even in small town USA

  • i just love their out fits haha

  • thuis is awesum hes a brilliant genuis

  • Absolutely brilliant! Fucking genious!

  • shut up u idiot

  • Absolutely love it. Got to see them during three different tours back in the 70"s. They were incredible live. Thanks for this reminder.

  • Yes, this is my favorite live version of this song! Thanks for posting.

  • let it rock

  • Just absolutely fucking awesome!

The best-ever line-up of the best-ever band playing their best-ever song.

  • and what a great album too. great memories.

  • truly legendary footage. there's no doubt that jeffrey hammond-hammond was the ultimate tull bassist.

  • One thing I love about this video is that you can really hear the bass guitar.

  • ottimo

  • Whoa, didn't know Martin ever used a Gibson SG. Sweet sound!

  • Bring back the Codpiece I say!!

  • I remember this tour.. My first Concert !

I was Eleven. Got High from the Contact smoke in Madison Square Garden..

God what a better time that was..

  • Gotta love the cod piece, looks like Ian's

    packing quite a load!

  • Phénoménale chanson. Une pure merveille.

  • Stunning version

  • Prime Tull...

  • You just have to put up the volume with this song. Greatest band ever. Ian's a genius.

  • needs more cowbell, gimme more cowbell

  • clearly cowbell is what makes it progressive rock and allows us to distinguish it from hair... :-) love cowbells!!!

  • Hilariously great. Not the best version of Minstrel on the internet, but certain proof that these guys were relatively deadly, even on an off night. JJH is a hoot, as was Glascock in his tenure. Tull aways had their share of characters.

  • taking no prisoners

  • lol, funny. tull rock, especially with this line up. glascock was great too

  • It's not complete. It starts at the second minute!

  • didnt need to be aware of the exact shape of ian's buttocks, but great band.

  • I enjoyed a quick peek! :D

  • @putdownan8dude well quit looking so hard!

  • @darincody aiiieeeee!!!! cant look away

  • Fantastic song, great memories. Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond was awesome on the bass, so fun to watch. Barre, Barlow and Ian, the man himself were such awesome showmen. Thanks for the post.

  • Yea Tull with the same line up would be worth at least a MILLION Barrie was the best drummer ever along with Jeffery on the keys.

  • Uhh, Jeffery played bass.

  • I always wondered why Tull omitted the beginning instrumental interlude, which is the most progressive part of this song. Can anyone shed some light on this?

  • Sure. This clip of Tull is dubbed (lip-synched). It was filmed in Paris in July 1975 as a video promo for the band's upcoming Lp, MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY.

This was filmed at the tail end of the Warchild tour. It was filmed BEFORE the band's actual concert that same night. Tull didn't play the full song LIVE at that time... only the intro acoustic and instrumental parts in the beginning of the song. To see those actual LIVE parts... do a search for "TULL MINSTREL INSTRUMENTAL". Enjoy. (Paul)

  • The codpiece is classic! 5 stars!

  • Fucking guitar chords are Ringing in Vahalla to this day!!!!

  • Indeed!!! Absolutely blistering riff. My favorite heavy tull song.

  • I WOULD PAY A FORTUNE IF I COULD SEE JETHRO TULL IN THAT LINE-UP ONCE AGAIN...!! Best Tull ever...!!

  • So would I, but it'll never happen unfortunately!

  • @Crownkocher Agree completely.

They never came close to matching this line-up before or after, always my fave band, but this was the best by far.

  • tuzor i luv this band

  • @jackHNv I think the Songs From The Wood / Folk Rock Trilogy lineup was good too. A close second in my opinion.

  • @Crownkocher Same here!!!!!!!!!God I wish I could turn back the clock!!!!!

  • @Crownkocher INDEED!

I like the originals a lot (Bunker,Cornick,Abrahams) and those who followed(Pegg,Glasckock,Jobson,ect...) but for me this is the ultimate Tull line-up!

  • Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond is great in this. Nice duds too.

  • OLD Tull, nothing like it. Not even NEW Tull. LOL Saw this show live and it kicked ASS.

  • Thanks. I saw them do this live in london on this tour.

  • This would seem to be the only professionally shot footage of Tull at their peak with Jeffrey H-H. Baffling, really. One of the biggest bands in the world and no one thought to film a single live show of theirs for five years. Doh!

  • MAN THEY WERE GREAT!

  • THE GREAT ONE!! IAN!

  • Woooowhh. what a blast...;)

    Thank you!

  • Saw them in 1975 when they sold out 5 nights at the Inglewood Forum (now Staples Center). They were the best live show around then, and they are still better than most live!

  • I was there. This show kicked ASS

  • The Forum is still the Forum at Manchester and Prairie Ave. and The LA Sports Arena was torn down to build the Staples center and Nokia Theater.

  • @Aqualung1956

That's right, I believe Elton John had just sold out four nights, then Tull sold out five,... definitely the hotest ticket in LA at the time, and so many people probably didn't understand all that they had just seen and heard...

  • Wicked version.....Tull rocks

  • no one will ever come close to Ian Anderson, unique rocker for all time.

  • Brilliant !!

Thanx for uploading it in full. XX

  • Catweazle !!

  • Back when music was real. Thanks Ian :)

  • P.S. I forgot to say that he's fucking amazing. He's my idol.

  • Holy shit the quality sucks so bad and Ian's voice sounds better than anything any present day singer can produce in the recording studio (after 1000's of hours of editing)

  • Who's playing bass at 2.10 when Jeffrey's wiping his face? Or is he hammering on? Great song - thanks for posting.

  • This is a mimmed recording. The ausio is probibly live not the video.

  • No this is a real live recording, video and audio don't seem to by synched right.

  • Tis good enough for me Young Ben but then I've always liked any Jethro Tull :) Still it would be good to see some stuff from their first 2-3 albums if possible :(

  • ...I've wanted to see this video complete for a long time....what can I say except FANTASTIC!! The minstrel rocks on this one...superb!! Thanks Ben!!!

  • Many others made some good music, but for me Jethro Tull-Ian Anderson and Pink Floyd-Roger Waters are the history of the music.

  • don't you dweebs know this is NOT all of this song; or are you too braindead to hear the first part, which ACHOSTIC!!! You dumb shits!

  • I suppose your a fan of the acoustic guitar then? well, i suppose those no sense in trying to please you then, for this video is clean of all acoustic insturments, but, do you see any acoustic guitar lying next to Ian verifying the fact that there was indeed the beginning of the song included here? or does it even matter? because a new conflict has arisen, there are no cords protruding from any of the guitars, and they had no cordless amps back then, perhaps the whole was was in fact acoustic.

  • I figured out the rythm part 2 this on guitar yesterday, I'll be working on the lead part later!

  • Minstrel "Complete"???

Oh no my dear Ben R.

I have the full 8-minute version of this.

It begins with a genuine synch-sound intro where Ian is talking to the audience. (Filmed July 5, 1975 at the Palais des Sportes in Paris.)

Ian tells the audience the band has just recorded a new song called "Minstrel in the Gallery." (This was before the album came out.) (This was the tail-end of the Warchild tour.) He explains what the song means, and then proceeds to play the acoustic intro of the song.

  • Hi Paul,

I wrote 'complete' only because the other uploads of this song contain bits of interviews spliced around the song. I will change the title to be more accurate.

  • Hi BenRossington (of Passion Play fame).

I didn't want you to change your title.

The word "complete" is good enough for the people on YouTube.

Using the title "Minstrel without interview" will only confuse people.

Please go back to the "complete" title.

Though I have the complete 8-minute version, it needs to be digitally enhanced first before I post it on YouTube.

The quality ISN'T good. So most people will still go to your post to see this song.

Have you ever seen that 8-min version?

  • Hi Paul,

I have not seen anything else from the 1975 Paris show beyond the 4 minute clip of Minstrel in the Gallery.

  • Paul, when are you going to post this video? I also asked you about the Paris 1975 film you said you were working on? What's the latest?

  • Paul,

This is the best live footage of Tull I've ever seen, does the rest of this concert exist, and if so, where can I get it?

  • Is this really "live"? It sure sounds like the studio version with the end intact instead of a fade down. Was that the original ending? Also looks to me like Jeffrey has no strings or cord!

  • Of course he has strings. Look at 1:05. And why she shouldn't become a good bass player between

1971 and 1975? Enough time it is.

  • It's a mime job. Doesn't look like Martin has a cable either.

  • What a pity this video is not clearer in quality... a rare gem.

  • This had to be near the end for Hammond and his ultra-cool Zebra outfit. John Glascock took over in late 1975 or early '76. Either way, great song and probably the best Tull lineup. One of my Top 5 Tull tunes.

  • Ahhh the glory Jeffrey zebra striped era. It doesn't get any better.

  • The best track Tull ever recorded played by the best line-up.

Bearded folkies? I don't think so, this song rocks bigtime!

  • What a treat to see such rare footage of THE BEST Tull lineup on stage, the group that recorded the masterpiece Thick As A Brick, which included the one and only Jeffrey Hammond Hammond on bass guitar. I wish Ian would put together a DVD of the TAAB show from 1972.

  • @BobHunter1977

Actually, they added the second "Hammond" to Jeffrey's last name as a joke, that's why some post's only refer to "Jeffrey Hammond"

  • @willicat441

As I recall Ian's version, both of Jeffery's parents were named Hammond, and as the British are so fond of hyphenating names Jeffrey used the name twice as part of his quirky and endearing place in Tull. As others have already said, Jeffery was the perfect Tull bass player - strange and mysterious, very theatrical. Most of the time the bass player in a band is off to the sides, over in the shadows ( think of Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones ), but not Jeffery Hammond-Hammond!

  • @BobHunter1977

I saw Tull only once, and that was the 1972 Brick tour. In the times of LONG hair - on stage and off in the audience - it was astounding to behold the bass player - of course it was the eclectic Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond - sporting a conservative "businessman" haircut. There's a video here on Youtube showing it. At the time we all thought it was downright weird and maybe even scary that somebody would cut their hair like that. But that just Jeffrey being Jeffrey, God bless him!

  • Best music ever played!

  • Now, if only Ian could still sing like this... =/

  • I love this video!

  • This is the kind of performance that made them one of the finest live acts of the 70s, period. And their tunes will live on a long time 40 years and counting!

  • Very Blackadder 2 looking!!

A codpiece, a codpiece, my kingdom for a codpiece, as Shakespeare didn't say

  • PLEASE repost this video without the term HAIR METAL in the description! I an Anderson and company deserve much better than that!

  • Fantastic :)

It's very rare to see live videos with jeffrey hammond hammond hammond hammond and his amazing zebra outfit! What a shame that he did leave the band 1975 and never played bass guitar. What does he do now? Something with painting?

  • Jefferey Hammond Hammond was as good as Ian in this video or maybe better....

  • suit & bass combo - class, just class

  • Thanks for posting this. About as Tull as Tull can get!

  • Thanks for posting this one.About as Tull as Tull gets!

  • No voice over, well done Ben. Unless I, am missing something, this is one of the only two Tull videos featuring Jeffrey, the other being, would you believe it, I have forgotten! Its either the beer or Alzheimers setting in. Seem to remember furry animals and Ballet dancers. Someone put me out of my mysery. Cheers from the Mingeral.

  • you're talking about the film shown during the Passion Play tour in which Jeffrey is the narrator

  • What a great band, what a great hardrock song.Their best line-up,Ian at his best visually and musically.

  • DUDE! Where DO you get this stuff???? It is just great! Keep it coming!!!

  • WOW!!

  • Finally, a mostly complete version of this!

  • exept it's missing about a third of the song!

  • Who cares, the first third is boring, the second third is overly wankish.

  • Now this is the Tull I remember! Awesome performance! Thanks soooo much!

  • Great stuff - as someone says, seen bits of this before but nowhere near as complete. Really like it because I first saw Tull live around this time (Warchild tour actually) and the clothes bring back happy memories. Also a reminder of just how good Tull were live in their prime.

  • Finally, this performance without that strange German guy!

  • "And he called the band down to the stage, and looked at all the friends he maade!"

  • "And he called the band to the stage, and looked at all the friends he maade"!!
