@Hako2004 Obviously I didn't mean her best ever... of course after her prime there's natural decline... but in context, I've heard performances she's given at this age, and older, that I preferred.
Although this is not my favorite Sutherland version of the trio, it's still a fine one, and it is good to remember that she was just about to turn 61 when she sang this!
Probably because her character is sutherland's mother's portrait coming to life due to sorcery to make Antonia ( Sutherland) sing and die from exhaustion. Maybe they wanted the mother's voice to have an other-worldly character.
I think that theatrical explanation of rrgallo and magicj530 is correct. This role does not allow us fully enjoy her brilliant voice. Pity, that she is so underrated artist. Just listen her Gluck, Ponchielli, Vivaldi etc. recordings
Sadly, not too long after this performance, Livia Budai had a very unfortunate Metropolitan Opera debut. If I remember correctly, she debuted as Azucena in Il Trovatore (with Sutherland, Pavarotti, and Nucci) where the Met audience roundly booed her and some actually laughed at her singing. I think she was replaced after just that one performance, first by Elena Obraztsova and then by Shirley Verrett. I never heard of her after that and don't know if she ever sang at the met again.
Don´t be ashamed of your tears. Offenbach´s music is enthralling. I cry at each performance (as long as it is good), and I see many of them. This year alone EIGHT in Germany. The best was at a small provincial theatre in Regensburg/Bavaria.
Wooble? After singing this piece so well, including the final high C#, all you hear is a wobble? How petty to ignore all the things she did well....especially at age 61. No voice, even young ones are perfect. Tebaldi had effortful high C's, but sang so beautifully it didn't matter. Callas was a genius in many ways, despite an intractable and disobedient voice. Caruso never really had a high C. Try listening past small imperfections..there is real beauty you are missing.
Hallelujah for that! Beautifully stated! This is a voice that had been singing professionally since the early 50's... 30+ years before. There are imperfections, and they are TO BE EXPECTED!
Was this taped in 1987?!! I can't believe it! Sutherland's voice is incredibly youthful for her age. The wobble in her middle isn't even very noticeable. Besides, her high notes and her phrasing remain supreme. If that date is true, I have to admire this great interpretation even more, because Sutherland's Antonia here is really amazing, capturing all the innocence and delicacy of the role without making it sound too "bland". This is great! ;-)
Her studio & live recording are the best! As everyone knows, all the parts of this opera should always be sung by the same "diva" (a very few has been able to make it!) This is indeed very rare!! I have quite always already seen the videos about her and you surprise me!! T H A N K S
Even at that age, Joan Sutherland's voice had such presence!

I love Joan, but this trio just wasn't very good... and even she was, obviously, not at her best.

She had not been "at her best" for a while....she was 61 when this performance took place.

Neither of those singers have a chance against Sutherland.

Well, generally that part is sung off stage, this would give such an effect while still having that person on stage.

When I heard this sung live in rehearsal today for my college concert, I about cried and definitely got goosebumps. Such thrilling music!

I saw Joan doing "Tales" in 3 different years and to me she was the only one that could capture the four characters of the opera.
