I think the reason people say that it sucks now is that they just have gotten bored of the show. It's the same exact thing for every show that's been on for more than 5 seasons, people are going to get bored with it.

tv is no dull medium. infact, i think it's all the mediums we have, combined....except for maybe taste....and some kind of touch medium. like handjobs. that can be an art. tv as a dull medium is an excuse for a nation having terrible television. TV is a democracy....and the public decides what it wants to see. we spend the money on all those little ads. what are ratings? when a show looses ratings what happens?

maybe that was a wrong way for me to say it... TV is an awesome medium, but its in many ways dull presently. Its very hard not to have it leave me apathetic. Always has had its problems.

But for some reason, I think the simpsons still tries, and I think still does a good job. I won't doubt the show doesn't appeal to quite as creative a mindset as it did in the 90's, no shit, but I still stand by it. We could argue forever whose the coward for liking it and who is for disliking it.

I'm not saying TV is perfect at all... its a very dull medium, but I am saying either one can love it or leave it. Anger destroys societies. And I think The Simpsons is one of the better examples of what TV is capable of under its present wussiness. Have you seen season 21 yet, its not terrible at all.

Season 20 (and I believe part of 19 too) got different writers, or something else changed. The jokes are no longer funny. Not once have I even smiled in season 20, unlike any other season. Times change, The Simpsons got worse. Deal with it.

My thoughts: I really do like constructive criticism. Blind complaining on the other hand is another story and is at least as bothersome to me as blind faith.

I have to be honest when I say I don't like the more recent seasons that much. I only really bring it up when others basically pose the question first. I do however think Eternal Moonshine which you posted was decent and it shows to me I can be pleased with something if it's up my alley.

I think its fine to have your own opinion. You gave it an honest chance, and you came to your conclusion. I'm not bugged by you :)

And even I often prefer the earlier ones, just the new ones don't get nearly enough credit.

The new episodes absolutely have a different approach (by necessity, usually the episode premises are bigger), and I understand how that makes people angry.

I just don't like it when its simply a mob opinion, devoid of actually trying to look at the episode.

I actually think a lot of the premises have been decent as well. It's mostly the type of humour that I'm not a big fan of nowadays.

What do you think of the middle seasons, particularly the ones that are equally hated?

I guess the 12-16 sort of era? I think theres lots that really push the limits of the show, lots of characters being hard to empathize with and weird plots. I think humankind of the early 2000's was really surreal, probably at peak excess (I hope!), so its oddly appropriate. If I take some distance from their 'credibility' here, those can be really really fun to watch, and there's still brilliance. At least they didn't do wedding after wedding ;). I could probably never watch S 13 again though.

I agree the plots and empathy were strange. The saving grace for that period for me would be the humour. Even in otherwise strange episodes there's a tendency to find myself really laughing in parts, which I guess is what I miss.

13 and 14 are my favourite seasons since the millenium I think.
