wrong the electric chair is a metaphor for a bar stool and Nick's ongoing struggle with addiction, could reference this a million times over too busy for just that keep it a simple Green Mile link to the Weeping Song/John Finns wife/Murder Ballads that followed etc...

Thamk you for posting this beautiful version! re: the comment "singular in most of rock music": yes, it does seem stream of consciousness, especially since he switches up the lyrics every time he performs it, which is probably why he's not a master-of-masters in the USa, where we like our burgers to be the same everywhere...
(...this is what the pure Terror before Acceptance of "The End" sounds like,

Can anyone tell me what DVD i have to purchase to get the "Boxed Set", Scottish TV, broadcast of 12 april 2001. I've not been able to find it on Amazon?
@mechroboticon i share your opinion, it does seems like a brief moment in, i get the feeling, courtroom, where justice is made of wood and wire, and god is never far away :D
1) is not so uncommon - just look at the lyrics to the complete "Murder Ballads", Pink Floyd's "The Wall" or Genesis' "The Lamb lies down on Broadway" for example;
2) isn't every song text like a stream of consciousness?
4) this is only present in few songs - Moloko's "Forever more", Björk's "Declare independance" or Archive's "Again" are building up in a similar way
@mechroboticon You pretty much summed up most of Nick Cave's work. He tells stories in a stream of consciousness that never really derails from the narrative and quite a few of the Bad Seeds songs don't really change key or structure. A few have chord changes and a few have breakdowns, but most of his songs just start rolling and don't let up. They just keep building and building.
@mechroboticon You might want to listen to some Pain of Salvation. They've got plenty of songs written in the first person but from a perspective other than the writer's ^_^
i love when he goes so wild ! i think he should be more wild in all the performences! i want to see more of his rough punk roots! i want him screaming, jumping , giving his soul and at the end recovert it again!
That's one of the best Nick Cave's performances ever. Beautiful, very emotional and intense. I saw it on youtube a few years ago, and then it suddenly disappeared. It made such an impression on me, that I kept checking if someone put it back. :) I'm very glad you uploaded it.
this is the ultimate momemt of music, it can not go any further..

This song is singular in most of rock music for several reasons:
1) It is written from the first person perspective of a character who is not the writer
2) It seems to be a stream of consciousness
3) As such, there is the sense that the whole song takes place over the span of only a brief moment or so in the speaker's mind
4) The song builds in intensity without overtly changing its structure.
It's really very impressive --you get the sense this is the very moment before electrocution.
