  • Vikings, Trojan warriors, the Fightin' Irish, and many others are respected so much that the local people wanted them as their mascot...which is an honor and a compliment. Many people around the U.S. wanted an Indian tribe to be theirs. I have always appreciated the American Indians. But...I know when they were first being photographed, some thought that the "black box" was "stealing their spirit"...so...misunderstandings do happen.

  • In an piece that she wrote for a book titled Genocide Of The Mind (2003), Professor Kimberly Roppolo who is a Native woman, wrote the one of the best responses to the question of why Indian mascots are harmful in her piece titled "Symbolic Racism, History, and Reality: The Real Problem with Indian Mascots.". If you take the time to read it you will never think the same way about this again. It is probably on the web somewhere.

  • I thought the Jesus clip was hilarious, and obviously intended as such. Does anyone know the name of the second song? It's driving me nuts trying to place it.

  • its the CELEBRATION OF NATIVE AMERICANS NOT THE DEFILATION of them! DUDE GOD WILL SMITE YOU...

  • fuck you with a crucifix

  • only the stupid ones are offended, The real ones are honored

  • and another thing: how is religion and race in any way related when it comes to mascots?? I see absolutely no correlation.

  • because both Jesus and the Pope are in a way mascots to the religious faith.

  • When Natives wear feathers(which are sacred) it is a part of their religion, when Natives dance and sing in their language it is a form of prayer in many cases. To see a mascot perform an offensive parody of this while wearing feathers (symbolic of sacred feathers worn by Natives) it is a form of religious persecution.

  • Ok the first two images in this film in no way offended me. And by him stating that it is obviously offensive goes to show that he is presumptuous. I loved the chief. Watching him dance made my eyes tear up. And I am part native american. The chief at the University of Illinois was in no way offensive. It portrayed a native american chief in a beautiful light. If you have a problem with indian mascots go after the ones that make indians look like red faced assholes. like the cleveland indians.

  • If you want to claim that by being "part Native" you are somehow inherantly born with the ability to speak from a Native perspective (though by your comments you clearly where not raised in a traditionally Native way nor even a way that allowed you to be sensitive to human rights). A Native watching this mascot dance around in a way that demeans and insults Native religion might have tears in their eyes but for a very different reason.

  • Man, I'd hate to hear that voice every time I opened my mouth...

  • i get the point of this video n yh i get it this is wrong i can see why this is offensive 2 native americans

  • look okay okay the white people fucked everything up in the us because this was our land right? so they make blacks slaves and us mascots to honor us or something but look at this before white people there were no diseases like HIV,herpes,or shit like that so thanks alot for the diseases guys HAHAHA so indy ken or whatever your name is tell your family i said thanks for the diseases they spread for having sex with monkeys hahahaha tell em

  • I used to have nithing against indians until they started crying and saying how native american mascots are racist. Im irish, do u see me complaining to Notre Dame. This goes to show why your race will always be looked down upon.

  • That's the whole fucking point. Racist Irish pukes who don't want to stand up for their sad ass culture don't understand those who do. Be a caricature; that's what we non-Catholic whites have done with your St Pats day. Get drunk and fight, wear green to honor the Irish. Be proud, asshole. That's what we think of your culture. You're too stupid and ignorant to know the difference.

  • Here's the bottom line: Most Americans enjoy mascots. One type they like is Indians. They have an appreciation for them and typically present a mascot or logo in an honorable & respectful way. The American Indian is 1% of the U.S population so the vote is 99:1. So...get used to it. The vast majority of Indian mascots around the U.S. are not going away. Final note: I have no personal dealings with mascots or logos. I rarely even watch sports. If you want to argue do it with someone else.

  • "So...get used to it."

    Yes, very "respectful and appreciative"...

  • Let's see...you had a gay-ish Jesus Christ and a Catholic Bishop, both religious leaders, in your example equating to a simple picture of an Indian warrior or brave. Doesn't seem like a true equation.

  • How is making a mockery of a indian tradition appreciating them? Taking a sacred tradition and using it for entertainment SHOULD leave someone morally bankrupt, but that's not the case. How about we name a team the Romans and recreate Nero setting Christians on fire. Sounds like a fair trade to me. If you're going to insult a cultures religious beliefs (and yes for those of you out there who aren't aware of why Natives dressed like that, it was for religious purposes) you should expect the same.

  • This is why animals make better mascots. They just enjoy the attention.

  • Hmm. Let me think. Why would an Illini mascot be OK in Illinois? Maybe because the people that live in that area have an appreciation for the Illinois Indians!? YEP! That is CORRECT!

  • Why is it the dancing Indian chief OK?...For the same reason the silly "fighting irish" and Minnesota Viking mascots are OK.

  • wow i made one with the same message but yours is way better

  • I' a Christian and I thinks the jesus and pope thing were funny, but I understand your point

  • "You think you can become a "Chief" after living among Indians for a year"

Do you realize that the word "chief" comes from latin?

  • KKX, You continue to be a complete idiot and an ignorant racist. The word does indeed come from Latin. Heard of the Sioux, Nez Pierce, (French), Blackfeet, Crow, (English) etc etc. IL25 - right on. This idiot needs to learn to read. If he understood the history of genocide and oppression he might have a different attitude. He is ignorant and uneducable, which is the nature of bigotry. I love getting him going cuz he spews his ignorant venom just so I can laugh at the punk. Here it comes.

  • getting me going? you haven't been paying attention have you? I get YOU going! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • nothing with any of that u fucker

  • ohh your not suddenly a racist i've thought that for a while. and casinos and things like that have a lot to do with it. it shows that others can sell out your culuture for money but when someone else tries to honor it therre racist and insensative.

  • what does it matter if you don't. you could if you wanted to. and by the playing indian thing i mean that if you consider someone learning the dances from native americans and living with them a year before becomeing the chieF than i guess we are. and also are we playing any more chief than at a casino or something like that. (not trying to be racist just making a piont)

  • how are we playing indian? besides how are you any less different. a white mascot, your the racist. how come different ethnicities cannot share the same symbols i thought everyone was equal. am i worng

  • ya besides its not to late to save the chief. the school has lost so much money from alumni that they have had secret chief auditions and you know what you can't do shit to stop it

  • Our people are strong

    maybe that is why they

    need to look like is..This

    Generation will have it'z say....

  • So the chief is like a dancing pope. okay thats fine if you see it that way. but the chief is also a symbol of pride and loyalty to the university of illinois and there fans and alumni. so how is it wrong to respect and honor a symbol. GO ILLINI!!! SAVE THE CHIEF

  • Google APA mascots. There is plenty more too.

  • I've never met an NDN who felt "honoured" by whites using them as mascots.

  • 'KarateKidX' what evidence do you have to support your finding that only 20% of Native Americans are against NA mascots?

This poll must have been taken on the parking lot of a Chiefs game or something because a majority of the Natives I speak with are against this.

  • Even if it is only 20%, and I very much doubt that figure, how many have to be harmed? Look up the American Psychological Association declaration on mascots. It is harmful. If you are doing something and I tell you it is hurting me, and you refuse to stop, that is aggression (thanks Che Butler). So it's ok to be harmful and agressive to 20%? How many to we have to harm before it is stopped?

  • Thank you DMorlack for posting this vid.

I find NA mascots offensive because they are pure mockery. These are non-native people making a poor immitation of my ancestors. Even if the dance was original, and performed by a real NA, I would still be ashamed that they were exploiting my culture.

NAs who performed in Buffalo Bill's shows were an exception and can not be used as an excuse for this continued mockery.

  • Many NAs performed in the Wild West show because it was thier ticket out of the reservation. The Wild West show toured all across the nation and in Europe, great leaders such as Sitting Bull, used this opportunity to meet with influencial people and to discuss issues facing thier people.

I don't agree with NA mascots because they encourage mockery. They don't teach anyone about contemporary NA issues and in fact allow the continued ignorance of NA affairs to be acceptable.

  • You're an ass!...Get over it!

people respected him, he was in no way a mockery. If you're too ignorant to see that than I'm sorry for you.

  • When someone tells you that something you are doing is hurting them, and you refuse to stop, that is aggression. Why is it such a big deal to white people? Let it go. Stop being aggressive.

  • you dont see irish people getting pissed about notre dame. so why do indians get so offended? BRING BACK THE CHEIF

  • Learn to spell it first.

  • Learn to spell it first. It always amazes me, a white man, how badly white people can misinterpret Native culture.

  • If the Irish are not offended, then that is up to them. The things depicted in these mascots are abominations of religous articles.

How many lawsuits do you think there would be if there were "New York Niggars", or the "Chicago Chinks"? So why is it ok to degrade my people?

  • Is there anything cartoonish or degrading about the Illiniwek dance? No. Nothing but respect. Have the concepts of pride, honor, tradition been eliminated with all this pc liberal inane bullshit? Seems like it. Do Native Americans REALLY feel this animosity towards the Chief or are they being coached? I bet they're more outraged by their overall treatment in general, but leave it to a few opportunists to ruin something as beautiful and meaningful as the Illiniwek dance. OSKEEWAWA!!

  • There is no respect in this. There is no pride. We do care. It is WRONG!

  • This is not meant to be degrading to Native Americans however! NATIVE AMERICANS teach the mascot the dance THEMSELVES!!!!so obviously they have no problem with it...

  • WE dont teach them SHIT! They get that shit from fucked up hollywood movies!

  • Oh look I found a native american who supports chief illiniwek lilpeach4u...suck on that

  • I don't support that racist bullshit.

  • you like to pretend that just because you're a native american, you personally knew all other native americans, past and present, and know absolutely everything they did.

You also like to pretend that the native americans were a unified nation before the europeans came.

  • When did I say that?? I dont know all natives, I dont know everything that every one of them did. I do know that we were not ALL united before the whites.

But I do know this: Mascots are ignorant racism, and that is all there is to it.

  • "When did I say that?? I dont know all natives, I dont know everything that every one of them did. I do know that we were not ALL united before the whites."

okay, than you have absolutely no basis to say things like:

"WE dont teach them SHIT! They get that shit from fucked up hollywood movies!"

  • Ok, let me rephrase that statement. No self respecting native with any respect for their people, would teach them that. And none of those "dances" that mascots do are any semblance of any traditional dance. They are mindless convulsions for the sake of cheap entertainment.

  • perhaps they are designed for entertainment, i think earlier in the comments there's a comment about about fancy dances which the natives used to entertain European fur traders.

Also, just because the 20% of native Americans who are against the Cheif just happen to be the most vocal, doesn't mean you know what all natives think about it.

  • I do not pretend to know the opinions of all natives. I have never said that. What I say is my opinion, and mine alone. And in my opinion, this is ignorant, racist propaganda ultimately designed to paint natives as inhuman characatures, so white america doesnt have to deal with what went, and what is still going on.

  • "I do not pretend to know the opinions of all natives." == lie.

    evidence:

"No self respecting native with any respect for their people, would teach them that."

    "WE don't teach them SHIT"

  • If any native had respect for his people and traditions, they would not sell their own people out. Spotted Tail sold out his people, and that is why Crow Dog killed him.

  • What all Natives think about it is irrelevant. If one child is harmed by it, it is wrong. And way more than one child has been harmed. I personally have talked with several. Guess what? They are real live loving beautiful children. Human beings, not sad inept mimicry of a culture that our government tried to exterminate. They nearly succeeded, and now many of the Natives I know are attempting to recover and reclaim those cultural practices and their lives. Can't we just let them do that?

  • nobody has been 'harmed' by it in any way, period.

nobody approcaches a child and hits it because of the cheif.

the cheif doesn't cause teachers to give children worse grades.

Heck, children aren't even really offended by the chief until someone tells them that they should be.

Even adults aren't offended by the chief without seeing someone else be offended first.

The truth is, there was absolutely no controversy until 30 years ago, 19.9 of those 20% just jumped on the band wagon.

  • Where are you getting your bullshit figures? Make it up and say the other side is lying. Typical conservative racist bullshit from someone who can't even spell chief, let alone understand what one is.

  • SHOW ME JUST 1!

  • in this country you do NOT have the right to not be offended.

Also, if you can show me 1, JUST ONE documented example, in some news story or something of someone who was harmed in a real way by the Chief as it is, I will take back everything i've ever said in favor of the chief and become an anti-chief person myself.

  • Here's some documentation. I got lots more.

  • I'm confused, where is this documentation?

  • Apparently I can't post links. The APA has the documentation, in both a press release and a declaration. Google APA on mascots.

  • you can send me a message through the you tube messaging instead of comments.

  • i googled that, and i found an article full of generalities and no real examples about how Indian mascots make Native American emo kids cry.

As i said, You don't have the right to not be offended. If you have low 'self esteem' that's our own fault

  • Did you look up all the research cited? There are very specific examples of loads of research that fully documents the damage done to many children. The defense of the ignorant relies on denial. I would supply a list of all the organizations that acknowledge how children are victimized for your entertainment. Mighty white of you.

  • i googled that.

What i found was an article about how indian mascots make native american emo kids cry.

    No specific examples

    no real research cited

no suggestion of real damage such as damage to the body or damage to the career

It's just full of generalities and speculation.

But, you seem to be the expert, if you can send me a message with links to real examples of real damage, please do.

  • Actually with a PhD in sociology, a MS in sociology and anthropology, and a BA in sociology and psychology, and would say I am certainly more of an expert than you. There is real research cited, you are just too uneducated the find it. I doesn't matter, as nothing will change your mind anyway, kid. It's in the nature of being a bigot.

  • okay, if you're such an expert WHY THE HELL DO YOU NOT SHOW ME REAL EXAMPLES?

Am i too uneducated to find it? no, I'm too uninspired to find it. I googled what you told me and read 3 or 4 articles.

"nothing will change your mind anyway, kid. It's in the nature of being a bigot."

I believe that the reason nothing will change my mind, is because there is nothing good enough to.

I challenged you to find me a good enough reason to change my mind, and you failed miserably.

  • There is nothing that will change your mind, punk. That is why you remain a bigot. You are most assuredly uninspired, because you don't want to find any evidence that you are wrong. It would be a bit much for you to think, rather than just believe. What a moron.

  • given up eh?

  • Also, I am not going to say that I'm not a bigot, but i can tell you this, given the definition of a bigot, you yourself, are, in fact, a bigot.

Instead of messaging me with a single article about a single person getting harmed in a real way by the chief, even when i told you that you could feasibly use the youtube messaging to do it, you just whined, bragged about your liberal arts degrees, and called me names. It's in the nature of being a bigot.

  • doesn't bother me cuz religion is bullshit...

but I agree Indian's have been shitted on for years...

Google "Freedom to Fascism" if you don't already... There are also many other things wrong with our country....

  • Osdadv! You are a good man! Wado for this.

  • Being a Heathen...yeah...not offended. But! I completely agree with you. I can see where others are coming from, talking about standards of excellence and pride, but having some guy dressed as a chief waltzing around purely for the sake of entertainment doesn't embody those ideals in my opinion. (Before I get blasted, that's just my opinion.)

    {PS~ finding portions of his video elsewhere shouldn't invalidate his point, considering artistic expression prolly wasn't the intention}

    Kudos.

  • Chii Miigwech!

  • i personally think that the singing and dancing jesus was funny and that the pope dancing was hilarious, specially to mmmbop. and yes im white and christian. but as far as the Chief goes i am definitely on the proChief side, the chief is so much more than a mascot, and hes not even one, hes a symbol of the university. we see him as honor, courage, loyalty, and many other things how is that a bad thing?

  • wow someone who is white and christian and pro-chief, how original.

  • great video!

  • now that im done with all my responses, heres my comment on this video; very nicely done and i give u kudos for making and editing this vid, as for the jesus thing, jesus himself said that people should dance, and its an expression of self, so to show him dancing isint such a big deal and i can see why christians wouldint see it as insulting at all, so maybe u coulda done better, but if u had the FBI probably woulda grabbed u, so this is good enough, proves a point lol, nice job.

  • no one would use a modern day idian as a mascot, who the fuck wants an alcoholic, black jack dealing, street bum as a mascot

  • oh yeah, we're the stupid ones, and i suppose next you'll try to tell us the earth is flat

    right? riiiight lmao.

  • ur a fuckin bitch, ur hypocritical ass prolly goes to the university, and then u gotta help take away somethin good,

    FUCK YOU, GO ILLINI

  • if they are gonna take away cheif iliniwek then they should take away all the native american mascots also what aboutthe fighting irish im both a shawnee native american and on my mothers side irish so if they are gonna get rid of cheif illiniwek they need to get rid of every mascot that is of a certain race

  • ok this is completely retarded ok im indian and i am not offended at all in fact i think its an honor that a great school like Uof I would use an indian as there mascot. and i dont knwo if anyone really know this butthat costume was givin to that kid by a member of the old illini tribe. oh yeah ou looked like a retard comparing religoud figures to a native american. i though the whole thing was pretty damn funny lol!!

  • i'm betting you aren't a member of any native nation because you don't even have the story right! no illini gave that regalia to anyone! thats right..regalia not a costume. you have no idea the spiritual significance of any of it either. stop being a pretindian and talking shit about things you know nothing about.

  • this orlistarr guy is the very reason natives are in the state they are today, people like him were running around selling MY land to white people, and running off with the money

there will always be maggots, and they always revolve around trash.

  • Btw, Benny, not to get into an argument, but those 'white bitches' nearly drove your people to extinction... Perhaps you should take a chill pill and be thankful we didn't just wipe you out all together?

    :)

  • Do me a favor and don't ever breed.

  • Ah I see its ok for a native to stand up for his people, but the minute whitey does it, its racism. :O

Though I do love that dancing pope, I keep just playing that bit... Can't stop laughing. xD

  • uhh yeah thats exatly it, the only thing whitey stands for IS racism, theirfore standing up for whitey is racism.

  • "your" video is a rip-off of other people's work.

  • lmao...more honoring i see!

  • Lol... I wasn't offended at all by jesus and the pope, infact i laughed out loud... Good stuff xD

  • fuck the stereotypes!

    we're still here init?!

    just ignore the white bitches!

no matter how hard they try, we still gonna be here! standing tall and not caring about what they have to say to us!

and as if we really dance like that!

    pshh

    fuck the illinois idians!

we still have our native pride!

  • honestly i thought the Pope Ipod commercial was hillarious, get a life you liberial COMMIE!

  • yeah, let's just strip all native American symbols from everything. To hell with native Americans and good riddance

  • lol see how much they honor us?

  • Yeah if they dont want to be honored then lets not honor them. We should honor the men who beat them. Besides who lost the war for this land? They did. So why should we honor the losers?

  • war? seems you need to do your research into your own history. this land was stolen by people who lied, cheated, and massacred innocent elderly, women, and children. go ahead and honor them. you still elect them into office even today! thats YOUR legacy to your children.

  • u guys are racist ass holes that think cuz u put a white guy in a war bonnet and dance him around in front of a crowd of white ppl is honor? racist dumb shit

  • my people fought a war and never signed a treaty to end it, theirfore that war is still in effect today, and you can be the next casualty mother fucker get at me.

  • The chief was treated like a GOD at U of I. It was thought that the chief stood for something great like honor, integrity, and loyalty. Everything thing that this University strives to be. As a Native American I was sad to see the chief go, as were some of my Native American friends and family. It's sad that it had to come to this.

  • damn...another saltine warrior!

  • wtf?? Where is this? What was it for? WTF?

  • This video makes a point in the most simplified and direct manner, and people still don't get it? Well, there's got a be a link to this and why Dubya Bush ever became president.

  • i love Jesus

  • this very touching it speaks to me it not fair that people have to put down others b/c they are different.

  • So what exactly is this stereotype? How about Florida State. Their Chief rides out onto the field on a horse and throws a flaming spear into the ground. I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to do that but come on. If dancing is considered racist then what's that called. And if that's a fake leather outfit why was it made by Chief Frank Fools Crow's wife of the Souix tribe?

  • Peter Harris Research Group and the U of Penn's National Annenberg survey are just two of several studies that have concluded the same thing.

  • That is absurd. The chief is looked upon with honor and respect and he wears a regalia that was presented to the university by a leader of the Sioux tribe. Also its been found in numerous studies that over %82 of native americans aren't offened by the chief but now, as usual in are society, the loud minority gets its way.

  • where are you getting this study from... i dont know what kind of native people are saying this but i would say almost all real native people feel that this is just degrading to native people. This just creates sterotypes about indigenous people and gives us a bad image to the whole world. so think about it, our culture is something that is important and its a smack in the face to see someone dance with a fake leather outfit with fake feathers who is not even native american do this.

  • I am a Native American and I am not offended by this. I always thought of it as an honor.

  • how can it be an honor when its creating more sterotypes of our people...where is the honor in that? it doesnt make me very happy when people come up to me and ask me if i have a tee pee or a warriors outfit and i have a peace pipe.

  • you're right that does stereotype YOUR people. Maybe their mascot should be a black jack dealer.

  • oh yeah? so chief wahoo is an honor to you as well i bet huh? yeah some indian. do us indians who care about our children a favor and educate yourself.

  • Great video.. Thanks for the comparison. Although it looks like others still don't get it. And, yes, this mascot is gone, but there are many others, especially at the high school level. Does changing a mascot and/or team name diminish the commitment of a team?

  • Is anyone else not fooled by this video? I don't believe for a second that that is really Jesus in that video. In fact I am almost certain it is an actor!! The real give away is that there is no way Jesus could hold a tune like that!!

  • Ive lived in illinois all my life, and every school Ive went to since 5TH GRADE has had a mascot AND logo of an indian. (3 different school total). Would you like to ban all my old schools and most likely THOUSANDS of other school of their logos and mascots.

Do you even realize what a respectful tradition it was that only a SMALL amount of real indians got banned from my future college? A tradition that i looked foward to being apart since i was little? Hope your happy now.

  • aww poor you

    LOVE THE VIDEO!

  • Great video!!!!!!!

  • jesus dancing to "I Will Survive" is funny the pope is gay anyway, I mean look at him he's Catholic and I don't know about you I'm just it didn't rain in that gym

  • My highschool's mascot is an indian in a head dress; we've had complaints about it, but the school isn't going to change anything.

  • you sure 'bout that? i thought that my school wasn't going to do away with the chief, but look what happened.

  • good job on the video. We need to show stuff like this if the responces are an indication of the level of education about Native people at our colleges. I could maybe support the Chief if he led to real learning but the majority of his supporters are completely ignorant on Native issues. Pity our insitutes of higher education prefer teaching stereotypes over the truth.

  • Great job, and I hope this gets the point across.

  • Maybe using N.A. images as mascots had some form of good intentions, but the point is it is offending people. If it is offending a culture, why should it be allowed to stay just because it happens to be some tradition? How is that fair to the culture? When something like this is allowed to continue after being opposed, it becomes a form of racism. The dances and attire hold sacred religious meanings and they were never meant to be made a mockery of or used as entertainment.

  • And ND makes fun of Irish People dancing around like a drunk idiot! Should we then get rid of that?

  • I would just like to point out this is not what most U of I people believe!

  • You made fun of Christians. Christians don't get mad anymore cause no one cares about the majority in this democracy anymore. If you had made fun of the Christians AND the muslims, you'd quickly find yourself with death threat from muslims. Native Americans, we are still loved by the white (white students cried when the chief left the stadium, they LOVED this 80 year old tradition), lets not become sensitive wimp jerks like the muslims or gays.

  • Would you be proud to be represented by a dancing Jesus? Did the preformer consider it an enormously huge honor to be a dancing Jesus? An entire university was proud ot be represent by that figure. I would be ABSOLUTELY PROUD to be representd by a Fighting Christ. It is considered the utmost honor to wear the costume. Look out Irish and Seminoles. The minorities are mad at the white man again.

  • This is the problem, you see "danceing" we see "prayer in motion". The Eagle Feathers used in these real Bonnets are the carriers of those prayers and the men who wear them are our spiritual leaders. This is not do to offend anyone it was done to educate. If you see the offence in dancing Christ why can you not see our offence when our spiritual leaders and our sacred way of "prayer in motion" is used in such an manor?

  • but if you read most of the comments here, most of us aren't offended by the dancing jesus.

  • BRAVO, this message needed to be said. thanks. :) i think unless if you are native, then you can actually relate to how shitty it REALLY feels to see an opponent rip a piñata dressed as a native american and rip it to pieces (in front of you)...AND mock a culture by skipping around like an idiotic leprechaun :|

  • Its not ok for a non-native person to dance or skip "around like an idiotic leprechaun". It is ok for you to dress in jeans and a T-shirt though? Can't have it both ways honey. Will stop trying dance like Indians when you stop acting white. Have a nice day!

  • lol i guess you have forgotten how the white ancestors wore breaches and powdered wigs. or maybe lederhosen if your ancestors were german.shows how arrogant some people can be thinking all things modern must be from the whites.funny i don't remember hearing about all those boats coming from europe with natural resources. oh yeah thats because you simply stole ours. which means all the gains made in this country have been done on the backs of native people.let the honoring continue.

  • I tried sending you a smoke signal but you didn't answer. Why are you typing in english? Shouldn't you be saying ugh! and how? You made my point. If you are "modern" as you say then why the big deal. It would be like me be offended by Paul Bunyon. Don't you have a real cause to attend to?

  • dude. really should read a good history book sometime in your life. stop expecting me to fill in your large education gaps. onen ken wahtsha? sata:wen tanon senhniseriiohsten. lol

  • Wow you really are a quick wit. Graduated w/honors 1988. Keep workin, you'll get there. I can tell you are a young mind full of mush that has just lost their way. You want a good cause. How about doing something to actually improve the life of the natives. If not, we can use a more realistic mascot depicting a drunken indian with a wilted feather in his cap laying in front of a casino. That would make for an awe inspiring halftime!

  • honors? you should get your money back. every time you open your trap you show just how stupid you really are. so answer my previous question mr honors.

  • you both aren't making any real sense to me. It sounds like you guys are both just trying to flame each-other over nothingness instead of discussing the video.

  • the point is, if you read all the comments by mascot supporters you will see exactly why such mascots need to be challenged. this is not about honoring native people. never was and never will be. look at their hateful words toward natives. they hate us. especially those of us who dare voice an opinion differing from theirs. i think the point is obvious to anyone with half a brain and some honesty.

  • Do you honestly believe that the Chief was started with the intention of harming Indians, or that Indians are really harmed by the symbol in any real way aside from perhaps some misconceptions about the past.

  • do you think we would be having this conversation if the mascot was a black tribesmen or a jewish person carrying a menorah all of course played by a white student with appropriate makeup and performing their version of an "authentic" dance? why is it so hard for people to understand?

  • Follow the $ and you find the truth. Whats left of the tribe in Ok just wants a payday and you are a pawn. The Seminole tribe is paid by Fl. State and they are O.K. If Ill. ever paid up you would wonder where all the offended went. Grow thicker skin.

  • still no answer to my previous question to you? so now you know the answer to why i am typing in english. because you are too ignorant to understand anything else.

  • You take the honorable remembering of the Illini as a personal attack 2 U. R U even Illini? I do not look at every silly thing a white person does as a reflection on me. The Nebraska mascot, a white guy in overalls and cowboy hat with corn coming out his jeans. Notre Dame has a clownlike guy in green ready to fight. Alfred University's mascot is a Saxon. That's a white guy. Wow! I'm offended! I think I'll let the hatred comsume my life until I contribute absolutely nothing to society.

  • so...what does white privilege actually feel like? lol

  • to K2ad is say: AMEN brother!

  • well, I personally wouldn't really mind any of those, and i'm jewish.

  • I'm sorry, is there something wrong with white people? half of the nations white citizens in this country, with family here for five generations have at native american blood. But since they're not purebloods, then you can't take pride in native american culture. If you don't consider half of this country native Americans as well, isn't THAT racist.

  • I am a mixed blood and I take great pride in my culture. I am full of blood and all of it is red. But it is the dedication of my heart and spirit to the native way of life that makes me native not the blood quotient, that is a US Gov policy!

  • good video I just wish it was longer...

  • Jesus was crucified by those he came to save. Making a guy dance in diapers doesn't offend me. My father is a minister & he dances. Once again, not offended. Do you realize that Native Americans actually had a hand in both the dance and the outfit? A Native American Princess even wore the outfit. Are you a Native American Princess? To quote Enseni "Indinas will keep on living as always..." What a great point. The Chief has had zero effect on them so how can there be a problem?!

  • native american princess. lmao.

  • rofl...Native American "princess" = two spirit...I can believe it after seeing the dance (never seen that at a stomp!)

  • also, the guy who made this video just stole these clips from ebaums and other you tube videos. At least make an original misinformed and ignorant video.

  • I'm so offended at how bad that jesus guy was at lip syncing.

  • This is hilarious! I am Roman Catholic and the "Jesus Shuffle" and "Pope a Dope" are extradordinary. Oh, by the way, Chief Illinwek is not a mascot- you are correct. As of 1990, he is the official SYMBOL of the University of Illinois as voted on by the Trustees. Moreover, Chairman Eppley of the Trustees took no vote to end the Chief performances this past week. Thus, his performances will not be ended until a vote is taken. Until then, please work on that "Like a Virgin!" Please???

  • The camera adds about 40 pounds to Jesus.

  • people are not mascots. yea, while their at it ban the vikings, the trojans and the spartans. a majority of the mascots are animals and people are not. it is pretty much common sense. it is degrading and suppressing. tired of non-native americans portraying native americans, it is just like an ol john wayne movie....bad acting. why weren't native americans asked to portray mr. illiniwek. probably because it would feel degrading. i would say r.i.p. mr. illiniwek, but i would be lying.

  • Because the tribe was wiped out by other tribes. The orignal regailia, official term for the outfit, was purchased from the tribe for $500 in the early '20's. Please do your research.
