Even if it is only 20%, and I very much doubt that figure, how many have to be harmed? Look up the American Psychological Association declaration on mascots. It is harmful. I find NA mascots offensive because they are pure mockery. These are non-native people making a poor immitation of my ancestors. Even if the dance was original, and performed by a real NA, I would still be ashamed that they were exploiting my culture.

The chief was treated like a GOD at U of I. It was thought that the chief stood for something great like honor, integrity, and loyalty. Everything thing that this University strives to be. As a Native American I was sad to see the chief go, as were some of my Native American friends and family. It's sad that it had to come to this.

Here's the bottom line: Most Americans enjoy mascots. One type they like is Indians. They have an appreciation for them and typically present a mascot or logo in an honorable & respectful way. The American Indian is 1% of the U.S population so the vote is 99:1. So...get used to it. The vast majority of Indian mascots around the U.S. are not going away. Final note: I have no personal dealings with mascots or logos. I rarely even watch sports. If you want to argue do it with someone else.

Many NAs performed in the Wild West show because it was thier ticket out of the reservation. The Wild West show toured all across the nation and in Europe, great leaders such as Sitting Bull, used this opportunity to meet with influencial people and to discuss issues facing thier people.
I don't agree with NA mascots because they encourage mockery. They don't teach anyone about contemporary NA issues and in fact allow the continued ignorance of NA affairs to be acceptable.

Ive lived in illinois all my life, and every school Ive went to since 5TH GRADE has had a mascot AND logo of an indian. (3 different school total). Would you like to ban all my old schools and most likely THOUSANDS of other school of their logos and mascots.

Maybe using N.A. images as mascots had some form of good intentions, but the point is it is offending people. If it is offending a culture, why should it be allowed to stay just because it happens to be some tradition? How is that fair to the culture? When something like this is allowed to continue after being opposed, it becomes a form of racism. This is the problem, you see "danceing" we see "prayer in motion". The Eagle Feathers used in these real Bonnets are the carriers of those prayers and the men who wear them are our spiritual leaders. This is not do to offend anyone it was done to educate. If you see the offence in dancing Christ why can you not see our offence when our spiritual leaders and our sacred way of "prayer in motion" is used in such an manor?

Wow you really are a quick wit. Graduated w/honors 1988. Keep workin, you'll get there. I can tell you are a young mind full of mush that has just lost their way. You want a good cause. How about doing something to actually improve the life of the natives. If not, we can use a more realistic mascot depicting a drunken indian with a wilted feather in his cap laying in front of a casino. That would make for an awe inspiring halftime!

the point is, if you read all the comments by mascot supporters you will see exactly why such mascots need to be challenged. this is not about honoring native people. never was and never will be. look at their hateful words toward natives. they hate us. especially those of us who dare voice an opinion differing from theirs. i think the point is obvious to anyone with half a brain and some honesty.

Do you honestly believe that the Chief was started with the intention of harming Indians, or that Indians are really harmed by the symbol in any real way aside from perhaps some misconceptions about the past.

Follow the $ and you find the truth. Whats left of the tribe in Ok just wants a payday and you are a pawn. The Seminole tribe is paid by Fl. State and they are O.K. If Ill. ever paid up you would wonder where all the offended went. Grow thicker skin.

You take the honorable remembering of the Illini as a personal attack 2 U. R U even Illini? I do not look at every silly thing a white person does as a reflection on me. The Nebraska mascot, a white guy in overalls and cowboy hat with corn coming out his jeans. Notre Dame has a clownlike guy in green ready to fight. Alfred University's mascot is a Saxon. That's a white guy. Wow! I'm offended! I think I'll let the hatred comsume my life until I contribute absolutely nothing to society.

I'm sorry, is there something wrong with white people? half of the nations white citizens in this country, with family here for five generations have at native american blood. But since they're not purebloods, then you can't take pride in native american culture. If you don't consider half of this country native Americans as well, isn't THAT racist.

I am a mixed blood and I take great pride in my culture. I am full of blood and all of it is red. But it is the dedication of my heart and spirit to the native way of life that makes me native not the blood quotient, that is a US Gov policy!

Jesus was crucified by those he came to save. Making a guy dance in diapers doesn't offend me. My father is a minister & he dances. Once again, not offended. Do you realize that Native Americans actually had a hand in both the dance and the outfit? A Native American Princess even wore the outfit. Are you a Native American Princess? To quote Enseni "Indinas will keep on living as always..." What a great point. The Chief has had zero effect on them so how can there be a problem?!

This is hilarious! I am Roman Catholic and the "Jesus Shuffle" and "Pope a Dope" are extradordinary. Oh, by the way, Chief Illinwek is not a mascot- you are correct. As of 1990, he is the official SYMBOL of the University of Illinois as voted on by the Trustees. Moreover, Chairman Eppley of the Trustees took no vote to end the Chief performances this past week. Thus, his performances will not be ended until a vote is taken. Until then, please work on that "Like a Virgin!" Please???

people are not mascots. yea, while their at it ban the vikings, the trojans and the spartans. a majority of the mascots are animals and people are not. it is pretty much common sense. it is degrading and suppressing. tired of non-native americans portraying native americans, it is just like an ol john wayne movie....bad acting. why weren't native americans asked to portray mr. illiniwek. probably because it would feel degrading. i would say r.i.p. mr. illiniwek, but i would be lying.

Because the tribe was wiped out by other tribes. The orignal regailia, official term for the outfit, was purchased from the tribe for $500 in the early '20's. Please do your research.
