@lokeycmos I wasn't thinking too much about power consumption. This is my first circuit that charges my phone and I was trying to make it as simple as possible.
you realy need to pronounce the names of your supplies, i could barley hear you and didnt use your video as a preferance to my project cuz it was so amutureish!
can your clear this, positive side of a battery connected to a resistor then the resistor connected to the positive side of the diode the the negative side of the diode connected to the positive wire of female usb then negative wire of the usb will be connected to the negative side of the battery, is it correct this is how i understand the video, try to watch is and correct me if im wrong tnx...
I'm sure your charger works and thanks for showing how, but ... The normal way a zener is connected, it will drop 5.1 V across itself at all times so it would provide the battery voltage (9.6) minus the zener voltage (5.1) to the device being charged, so that's only about 4.5V for a fully charged 9V battery, then it drops as the battery drains. Also, to function correctly the zener has to be opposite polarity you show, and in parallel with the load, so it dumps voltage. So you need a switch!
Why doesnt it work on ipods im making this for my ipod will it still work? Also can you add a switch to it so its not on all the time? or perhaps an LED.
@shortyjk95 Sorry but most ipods it wont work. they actually require a signal from the green and white wires to actually accept a charge. Apple just wants you to buy their products for insanely high prices
@galactus900 you can you use a switch, but if your electronic device is not plugged into the portable charger, you will not be using any power on the battery. so no really need for an LED or switch. Well.... you want to overkill, then i would recommend an LED and putting female USB slot in a cut out on the side of the altoids box.
@whitgett not in this tutorial. the white and green wires are signal wires, which are used to send and recieve information. red and black are simpley just power. if you want, you can simply snip off the green and white wires if you want to keep it all permanent.
@bmwproductions96 - Ya, mine is jacked up too. it puts periods at random places when im typing. my sister also has one and it freezes on her. so we have to take the battery out and insert it back in everytime. and its stupid how you can't have a signature for texting. well at least i got mine for cheap.
watching this video made me want to shoot a puppy...

@marc1979Guitare remember, this method does not work on some phones (mostly smart phones). i was just using an older one.
