Go Mark Ibold!!! Love seeing members of Pavement still making great music. Sonic Youth and Pavement made some of my favorite music ever. I love Expressway to yr Skull with Malkmus onstage. Long live these guys.
yeah, how does one effectively utilize two or more basses in an ensemble? is there some canonical method of coexistence? there's no lead and rhythmn bass as there are for two guitars so what does a musical orderer do?
I don't know for sure but I'm guessing both basses play pretty much the same thing. The second bass would emphasize certain notes.
When both basses play at the same time it would be louder, so you can have more dynamics in the bass line. For example:
Bass 1 would play: bum bum bum bum
Bass 2 would play: .........bummmmmm
and together there would be an emphasis on the second beat and an interesting mix of bass tones even though they are both playing the same notes. But I'm guessing.
I melt from their tunes!

Sensitive music, no one does it better than Sonic Youth. No ones wiser, not Patti Smith, Joy Division, Television or the Smiths.

Yeah, Sonic Youth, or as I like to call'em 'The Sonics' (no relation to that mid-60's garage/beat American group).
It was a spello, a typo, a feckin' byproduct of staying up all night listening to SY's skronk rock on the 'Tubester.
My fries, mrbuckethead.
