  • actually rthey are called 4 star cheifs...and they actually think they are more than chiefs of garbage...tey think they are planning a strategic war to conquer the world

  • We do not have the landfills, but we burning all the garbage in a huge storage.

  • It's going to landfills? I wonder if someone ever heard of recycling (at least extract recycable stuff before it goes to landfill)?

  • Yea that guy in the 7:10 part does look like a general. Shit hes definitely the general while all his soldiers are out everyday fightin garbage thru all weather conditions. Salute!

  • what the heck am i

  • 2200 tons of force exertion by a rear loader's hydraulic cylinders? That's 4.4 million pounds...I don't think so. A car crusher's cylinder's are far larger in diameter and are around 100 tons or 220K lbs. I think he meant to say 22 tons of force or 44 lbs, which is realistic.

  • It's 2200 psi

  • i hate impatient drivers

  • Should have followed some of us up in the bronx grabbing 20+ tons a day. They made our job look kinda easy if you ask me. Try picking this shit up for 20 years in all kinds of weather. We are soooo underated. Next they are bringing GPS to every truck to try and nickle and dime us on our brakes. They want frickin' robots...no respect for what we do. Sqeeeze and sqeeeeze us. Absolutely no conscience in this Dept. Fuck You Bloomberg and your elitest big brother era. FUCK YOU.

  • i used to be on the job and you are so right brotha. This mayor has no clue what goes on. I was on the job 5 years and tranfered to fd. I will always have respect for nyc sanitation

  • that's cool man...where did you work? I was going to be a fireman also...I passed on it. Sometimes I wonder....

  • And if you dont give them 20 tons they will "ride" you and make up complaints.

  • I loved the footage of the cars following the truck down a narrow street. If I had a dollar for every time that happened....

People are like lemmings: mindless. LOL

  • An excellent documentary! I tip my DSNY sanitation worker's cap to the History Channel for making it. Thanks.

"Hopper juice"? I've always heard it referred to as "maggot juice." I guess it must be a Manhattan colloquialism.

"Along with loggers and fishermen, waste collectors have one of the most dangerous jobs in America. In fact they're over two times more likely to be killed in the line of duty than police or firefighters."

HEAR THAT NEW YORK? WE ARE WORTH OUR WAGES!

  • as a dsny sanman i enjoyed watching this thanks!

  • also to add a lot of mileage gets put on the trucks from plowing snow. the dsny is responsible for snow removal in the city during the winter as well.

  • thanks for posting, im a sanman for the dsny and had no idea there was a special. there really is so much that the dept does that no one knows about, looks like a good show i have to catch it. and speakin of the 5 year replacement after 5 years these trucks have well over 100k miles on em and have been thru hell from the beating we put on them. they need replaceing that often.

  • Great program. What was up with that guys uniform?

  • Very very good

  • This is a good show, very informative, watched the whole thing the other night.

  • what show?

  • Well it was a special, dont even remember the name now, but I would suggest seeing the whole thing, it was an hour long.

  • I think its a series called "The Works"

  • great video..loved it!

  • Nice

  • Nice you work fast, i missed the first 10 min of this.

  • Awesome!!! This was really interesting to watch, thanks for posting this mate. Could swear that guy at 7:10 looked like a General! lol Also didn't realise they had to haul their waste outer state a lot to landfills. Kinda silly replacing the trucks every five years, that's only half a truck's lifetime. Also with that new transfer station how they haul by rail, it's just like Veolia down here - same process! Wonder why the tipping floor has to be cleaned out daily?

  • hey Mitch i thought the same thing about that guy when i seen him HAHA he does look like a general

  • Mitchell this was on the history channell the other nite. They clean the floor every nite because just like no garbage can be there longer than 24 hours from dumping. Its health department rules i am sure.I bet they still have some big healthy rats running round there.I watched this and it was a good trash documentry enjoyed it one hour long..

  • Mmmm... different down here, you can leave the shit dumped in the pit for a day... though maybe that's because it's dry waste. Maybe at other transfer stations the mixed watse has to be cleared out, haven't actually been to others... be an interesting to find out.

  • Alot of these trucks are ran 24 hrs a day, one crew gets out and another gets in, they get alot more use than they would in other places, hence the policy of replacing every 5 years. The old ones get auctioned off, there are about a dozen of them here in Kansas, I used to drive one.

  • Yes that's true. I didn't really consider the hours they operate. Used to see a lot on RDK when I used to always look on there. Just can't believe how busy this dept. is!

  • A lot of these trucks end up in Long Island, NY too. Tri-State Group carting had a couple of old CCC/Heil RLs collecting my old town Freeport where I used to live even one CCC IRL. Jamaica Ash Rubbish in Westbury, NY was another target!!!

  • what do you mean by a lot of these trucks end up in long island

  • I meant that when NYC retire these RL trucks like what you see in the post, most of them end up being auctioned out to either some sanitation districts or private sanition companies in Long Island, NY! I know this cause I used to live there all my life & I've seen a lot of them collect where I lived & other spots through out the counties there! Long Island is a large suburban part of New York City! I hope this answers your question!

  • thanks
