  • just sound slike a guitar..haha great job!

  • can you say LIKE A BOSS

  • Oh jeez, 6 strings worth of violin, just thinking of the reverb if it were acoustic just gets to me.

    ~

  • great playing!

  • It's easier to play things than to listen back afterwards and work out what I am doing!

But the basis off what am doing there is simple, the chords are descending at that point from a G#minor7 to a Gminor 7 so I'm sort of playing a first position scale of E major starting on a G# then dropping down a semi tone to a scale of Eb, it's the change down one step that makes the effect......I think!

  • @PeteHartley HOLY $#$84&Q YoU ARE THE BEST FREAKING violIN PLAYER I HAVE EVER SEEN IN THE HISTORY OF MY LIFE ___EVER____ OH MY GOD!!!!

  • I can't figure out what are you playing in 46-52 sec. I bet its simple, but in fast tempoo its really amazing.

  • omg!!

  • Sounds like Steve Vai in some parts :D

  • Hi Bella

It's a POD X3 Live and the patch I'm using is called "Purple".

To be honest though it's rare that I use FX on gigs.

    What fiddle do you use?

    Pete

  • @PeteHartley Thanks for the info, Pete. I have a Yamaha endorsement, so I play an EV 205. Most of the stuff I arrange for the group is electric guitar covers, so we have been through a lot of effects. Used to use Boss GT-10's, but they were so harsh. Now using Vox's when we go direct, and a custom boutique board with a Rivera amp when I get to use an amp. Let us know if you ever perform in Vegas, we would love to hear you. Best, Nina DiGregorio, Bella Electric Strings

  • @BellaElectricStrings Get me a gig in Vegas and I'll be there!

I'm on facebook , my email is info@pete-hartley.co.uk and I've got skype pete2hartley if ever you want to talk violins

    Cheers

    Pete

  • Hey there Pete! Just wanted to let you know that we love the tone you are getting with your effects, wondering what you are using? We use mostly Vox tonelabs...it's hard to get a good tone out of anything else that doesn't sound like bees buzzing with electric violin. Can you let us know which effects processor you are using here? Thanks! And great work!

  • I would kill for that tone on my guitar!

  • holly shit that sounded bad ass i didn't ever know you can make an electric violin sound like a guitar but damn sitll i never seen anybody shred a violin like u especially the blues like you did.. well hey leave me a comment on my page i play harmonica also subscribe me back i subbed you..

  • Sick!!!!!!! :D

  • Suena bien B)

pero también suena muy parecido a una guitarra eléctrica D:

  • Never seen a violin with 6 strings D:, plus the size looks small...probably a lil hard to play it noes?

  • @ShadowRayzzz I used to have a 7 string before this one, but it isn't small it's a standard full size violin, it's because it's headless that it looks short.

  • OOOHHHHHHH!!!! maN AWESOME!!!!!!

  • GENIOUS!!

  • Wow I love this. really looking forward to hearing you at our wedding in August

  • This is great!

  • it the kind of blues steve vai would play :p

  • I wonder if you could perform the original 1970 version of "Layla" by Derek (Eric Clapton) & the Dominos. This song has wonderful slide guitar by Duane Allman. Surely your e-violin could imitate this kind of sound.

  • omg 5 strings

  • @kirdook 6 strings!

  • @PeteHartley oops haha

  • better than a guitar

  • great song! What a fashion violin xD

  • Satriani plays Violin too! xD

  • i love this the 1st note you play all ways put a smile on my face

  • those who thought this vid isnt fun

  • 3 people are deaf

  • @sTsbeatzz ? which 3 people!

    Agreed!!

  • Awesome stuff Pete. Them's blues alright.

  • holy shit!

i didnt know ppl did this. amazing :)

  • what kind of gear do you have to hook it up to a midi?

  • @aoibhin2000

    Hi aoibhin2000

I don't have a midi violin, I just use the POD X3 PRO to process the violin sound.

Email me if you have any other questions

  • AMAZING !! I LOVE IT !

  • The tone is Rock Guitar tone.... nothing special It is not violin tone...

  • As I violinist, I've been told to "like" fiddling as the background of some country garbage. I've been told to "like" being stripped of my individuality and thrown into an orchestral setting. No way. I LIKE the blues.

  • if u dont mind me asking how much did the violin and the pod cost?

  • Great! Thanks.

    Klaus

  • how do get a 6 strings violin? is must to be very expensive

  • @EzeQac

    Ebay!! XD

  • whats it like playing the 6 string?? =D

  • @thebigbadwolf96

Playing a 6 string is totally normal for me as is a 5 string, I'm not so good on a four string now!

  • That totally SMOKES. So great to see your technique on video, like a lesson. So many eviolin players are just using classical technique, nowhere near the spectrum of tone and pitch you're using. Outstanding, reminded me that the violin had a pretty significant role in blues a couple of generations ago.

  • @silzelresearch

Thanks very much and glad you enjoyed it! Your violins look pretty amazing!

  • This is just awesome. Could listen to it all day.

  • QUE CARAJO !?

  • Never thought it was possible to make the genuine blues sound on a violin! This is superb stuff you've composed here!

  • Hoochie Coochie man??

  • who would have thought..................awesome!

  • What is that violin tuned to?

  • @blaakdawg It's tuned in 5th same as a 4 string violin with 2 low strings - so starting from the highest note in pitch E, A, D, G, C, F, I used to have a 7 string which went down to a Bb lower than a cello

    Pete

  • @PeteHartley thanks for the reply ** I'm a guitarist trying to pick up the violin, and I must say, your legato is awesome. Good stuff.

  • awesome just awesome, love the blues, never heard it on electric violin like that before. Tell me do you ever play other styles, I seem to remember watching some saturday all day special on woodstock I believe and saw this person playing electric violin is what so trippy n e one know who that was????

  • sounds like a distorted harmonica haha.

    Very cool.

  • Love it!! Innovative!!!

  • I teach anywhere in the world using skype ( pete2hartley )

  • I love this. I m just looking forward for electric violin practice, but cannot find a teacher near me sigh.

  • untill your video i thought violin was gay and annoying but you make it sound like it is played with feeling! sick playing 2 thumbs waaaaaayy up!!!

  • oh my word, this is fantastic!!

  • only one word can describe this: amazing......

  • Pete - you could find work in Chicago any time! I knew you could really play, but this is outstanding! Shredding that's actually melodic and soulful. Good Stuff! I'm going to save this and "go to school" on it. "woodwiz"

  • Thanks Woodwiz

I really like playing the Blues, funnily enough I would love to do some gigs in Chicago.

    Cheers

    Pete

  • That is absolutely fascinating to listen to and watch. I've never heard anything like it before. You play with such ease and finesse. I was searching for the 'violin and blues' music and this video surfaced. You are one very talented individual - an understatement, I might add - and thanks for getting this out on YouTube. I've listened to it numerous times and it still blows me away. Do more if you are able. Wow.

  • Thanks very much Art,

You are right it's time I did a bit more blues!

    Cheers

    Pete

  • omg your amazing you shred the violin

  • how many strings does that violin have?

  • 6, I used to have a 7 string until a few years ago

  • what tuning?

  • from the highest pitch decending E, A, D, G, C, F and on the 7 string Bb

  • AWESOME

  • seriously fucking awesome!! OMG!! :)

  • Awesome, man!!!

  • Just amazing Pete. Well done!

  • oh dam! do you need to know how to play a violectra when you already know how to play violin and electric guitar?

  • Ofc m8...

  • I think I am in love........

  • sounds like a mix of harmonica and guitar

    great!

  • great!

  • very uplifting and played with TONS of feel. Pete Hartley Rocks!

  • Wow what a sound - absolutely superb!

  • Pete is the stuff...loved it

  • Whoa, this is supercool! I didn't even know there was such a thing as an electric violin. Awesome playing!! Sounds great!

  • Well, I've never heard a violin do THAT! Great job Pete!

  • Great stuff, I have never seen anyone play the electric violin so guitar like. That's really cool! I don't know what that guy was saying about the tone, it sounds good to me.

  • WOW!! The tone you get out of this violin is amazing!! It seems a guitar, yet the phrasing possibility are incredible. I'm going to steal you a couple licks anyway... :-)

  • Top Stuff!

  • Cool! This rocks, Pete!

  • I love the distorted tone on this! It sounds like a guitar!

  • Amazing plying Pete - Like the sound and feel a lot

    DP.

  • Wow!

Very nice playing Pete! Thanks for sharing & ...

    Jam ON!

    -BB

  • :O. I'm blown away of the capabilities of a violin...and the violin player

  • WOW rilly good

  • Nice phrasing! Great effect as well...5 stars~

  • Nice Pete!

  • Well, He has really good chops and intonation, but for me, the tone is obnoxious and there is little "feel" to the playing. Check out Sugarcane Harris if you want to hear blues on the Violin. But this being said, I will try to pick up a few of the licks.

  • I dont know what would paganini think but i loved it :)

    cheers

  • wow, truly amazing!!!

  • very very nice thanks

  • ... why do you play this with violin...

  • Hi ird110186

I have never used the boss although I know of other fiddlers that use Boss, I am thinking about getting logic and using my Macbook pro as my live processor.

    Cheers

    Pete

  • Hi, I want to know for a electric violin what multi effect pedal you like the most, the pod x3 live or the boss gt-10?

  • Good stuff... I prefer less distortion with my blues .. But good stuff

  • @IamTheToast1 but less distort on a violin doesn't sound as guitar-like

  • you are really working that line 6 pod arent you now

  • awsome XD

  • Nice playing!!

Where did you get that 6-string violin or did u made it yourself?

  • It's made by David Bruce Johnson a Canadian living in the UK the brand name is Violectra. This is the 8th E violin Dave's built for me the previous one was a 7 string.

Some great players around the world use violectra which is great since I was Dave's first customer.

    Pete

  • I'm not sure about using that much distortion playing blues, but the playing is solid.

    Good stuff.

  • OMG!!! THIS IS GREAT!!!! LOVE IT!!! If u like this, then u should check out this gruop called the baroque boyz and there first song called turn-around!!!!!

  • Thanks for explaining that, I should have replied sooner! the only thing I would add is that frets can be fitted to any violin, there is even a company selling peel on peel off frets.

  • Violin and guitar have some serious differences; namely, the steps between notes is obviously smaller on the violin, meaning intonation is more critical. Frets also don't exist on a violin. :D

Guitar to violin isn't a bad switch since shifting and musical basics are already there; I'd say a 6 month interval? maybe less?

  • cool!

  • Hi Pete, great sound. Love the combination of the blues, with the electric violin and the POD. Do you acually need classical violin lessons to play that beauty? Or can you learn quickly as a guitarist?

    Cheers, Johan

  • Hi Johan

You don't need classical lessons, but lessons of some sort to show you the principles would be useful. Violins can have frets fitted which would solve the tuning. Bowing on a violin can take a lot of work, practicing in front of a mirror to get the angle right is useful.

I don't know where you are in the world, but I ma doing a class in Birmingham uk or I can do skype lessons.

  • sangar habis....(indonesia language)

very hot spectaculer sound and skill....

i really love adore....your creativity and skills of sound...

  • Nothing new, just a rehash of what blues guitarist have been playing for years. I wonder if this "violin" is tuned as a guitar eadgbe or as a violin gdae? if you have anything original it would be great to hear it.

  • the 6 string is tuned in 5ths F C G D A E.

Re This is just a rehash, well that's how I hear it. I don't claim to be doing anything radically new< I'm just enjoying playing with the track and with the sounds, and I haven't copied or studied any guitarists licks although there are little bits of Sugar Cane, JLP, Stuff Smith and Vassar that I have stolen over the years.

If you want to hear original tunes I have recorded, if you google and search itunes and myspace you will find some things.

  • Amazing sound !

Heard a bit of you on BBC Hereford and Worcester this evening !

  • this is the best electric violin solo

  • fuken ill bro

  • MUY BIEN Viejo. Congratulation

  • really nice.i am thinking of buying one too!

  • NICE <3 :D

  • Hi Pete, superb improvisation, you are real natural, just fantastic talent. You know Me and Rich just think you are no 1 at what you do on the blues.

  • jus wonderin what type of electric violin that is!?sounds cool with da pod

  • Hi Breffman

It is a 6 string Violectra made in Birmingham UK

    Pete

  • so beautiful...

  • Wow... I've seen you Live and i know your good pete but... God.

  • damn that was amazing je suis sur le cul haha

  • freaking awesome!

When i grow up i wanna be just like you!

  • This is really, really, really awesome!!! If I would hear this without knowing that it´s a violin, I´d say: This is a really great blues-guitar player!

  • that really is awsome

  • Simply fuckin amazing dude. I loved it...being a fan of blues music like Stevie Ray Vaughns and John Mayers stuff...But yeah i really fuckin loved it man. Good job.

  • Cool stuff, young man! - s'pose you know of Perry Leandro with the Killer Blues Band on YT? - Blues fiddling with a wah personified.

    Barry

  • Anyone referring to me as young man has to be alright!!

Will check out Perry Leandro when I get a minute

    Pete

  • Ever tried Pitch-Harmonic on that thing? xD

  • WOW, amazing playing! Your daughter told me to check out your music and I'm glad I did! Did you have this 7 string violin built just for you? keep it up!

  • Hi Darkdragon,

I wonder which daughter that was - I'm guessing the younger.

All the electric violins from Dave Bruce Johnson are hand made to order. I no longer have the 7 string, the latest one (the one in the vid) I have had for 2 years and is a 6 string.

    Cheers

    Pete

  • Video description says Pod X3 PRO - but it ain't out yet! :) Cool playing though

  • I bought it in Birmingham in March so I think you will find it is out yet!

  • PETE!! I just can't spell my own name!

  • Fantastic!

    Sounds incredible

  • Demon playing Pete, that does sound good and that Violectra looks blinding with all those strings.

Hopefully, see you in June at FHUK.

  • frickin awesome

  • Pete - I'm gonna have to talk to you about making faces when playing mate, haha..

The Line 6 works nicely with the Violectra that's for sure...

  • I know I need to do some mirror work!!

  • Gah don't worry, you know about me and my open mouth! :)

  • That was just too cool!!! Awesome!!!!!

  • Holy Cow! That was incredible and fun!!!
