It's easier to play things than to listen back afterwards and work out what I am doing!
But the basis off what am doing there is simple, the chords are descending at that point from a G#minor7 to a Gminor 7 so I'm sort of playing a first position scale of E major starting on a G# then dropping down a semi tone to a scale of Eb, it's the change down one step that makes the effect......I think!
@PeteHartley Thanks for the info, Pete. I have a Yamaha endorsement, so I play an EV 205. Most of the stuff I arrange for the group is electric guitar covers, so we have been through a lot of effects. Used to use Boss GT-10's, but they were so harsh. Now using Vox's when we go direct, and a custom boutique board with a Rivera amp when I get to use an amp. Let us know if you ever perform in Vegas, we would love to hear you. Best, Nina DiGregorio, Bella Electric Strings
Hey there Pete! Just wanted to let you know that we love the tone you are getting with your effects, wondering what you are using? We use mostly Vox tonelabs...it's hard to get a good tone out of anything else that doesn't sound like bees buzzing with electric violin. Can you let us know which effects processor you are using here? Thanks! And great work!
holly shit that sounded bad ass i didn't ever know you can make an electric violin sound like a guitar but damn sitll i never seen anybody shred a violin like u especially the blues like you did.. well hey leave me a comment on my page i play harmonica also subscribe me back i subbed you..
@ShadowRayzzz I used to have a 7 string before this one, but it isn't small it's a standard full size violin, it's because it's headless that it looks short.
I wonder if you could perform the original 1970 version of "Layla" by Derek (Eric Clapton) & the Dominos. This song has wonderful slide guitar by Duane Allman. Surely your e-violin could imitate this kind of sound.
As I violinist, I've been told to "like" fiddling as the background of some country garbage. I've been told to "like" being stripped of my individuality and thrown into an orchestral setting. No way. I LIKE the blues.
That totally SMOKES. So great to see your technique on video, like a lesson. So many eviolin players are just using classical technique, nowhere near the spectrum of tone and pitch you're using. Outstanding, reminded me that the violin had a pretty significant role in blues a couple of generations ago.
@blaakdawg It's tuned in 5th same as a 4 string violin with 2 low strings - so starting from the highest note in pitch E, A, D, G, C, F, I used to have a 7 string which went down to a Bb lower than a cello
awesome just awesome, love the blues, never heard it on electric violin like that before. Tell me do you ever play other styles, I seem to remember watching some saturday all day special on woodstock I believe and saw this person playing electric violin is what so trippy n e one know who that was????
Pete - you could find work in Chicago any time! I knew you could really play, but this is outstanding! Shredding that's actually melodic and soulful. Good Stuff! I'm going to save this and "go to school" on it. "woodwiz"
That is absolutely fascinating to listen to and watch. I've never heard anything like it before. You play with such ease and finesse. I was searching for the 'violin and blues' music and this video surfaced. You are one very talented individual - an understatement, I might add - and thanks for getting this out on YouTube. I've listened to it numerous times and it still blows me away. Do more if you are able. Wow.
Great stuff, I have never seen anyone play the electric violin so guitar like. That's really cool! I don't know what that guy was saying about the tone, it sounds good to me.
WOW!! The tone you get out of this violin is amazing!! It seems a guitar, yet the phrasing possibility are incredible. I'm going to steal you a couple licks anyway... :-)
Well, He has really good chops and intonation, but for me, the tone is obnoxious and there is little "feel" to the playing. Check out Sugarcane Harris if you want to hear blues on the Violin. But this being said, I will try to pick up a few of the licks.
I have never used the boss although I know of other fiddlers that use Boss, I am thinking about getting logic and using my Macbook pro as my live processor.
It's made by David Bruce Johnson a Canadian living in the UK the brand name is Violectra. This is the 8th E violin Dave's built for me the previous one was a 7 string.

Thanks for explaining that, I should have replied sooner! the only thing I would add is that frets can be fitted to any violin, there is even a company selling peel on peel off frets.
Violin and guitar have some serious differences; namely, the steps between notes is obviously smaller on the violin, meaning intonation is more critical. Frets also don't exist on a violin. :D
Guitar to violin isn't a bad switch since shifting and musical basics are already there; I'd say a 6 month interval? maybe less?
Hi Pete, great sound. Love the combination of the blues, with the electric violin and the POD. Do you acually need classical violin lessons to play that beauty? Or can you learn quickly as a guitarist?
You don't need classical lessons, but lessons of some sort to show you the principles would be useful. Violins can have frets fitted which would solve the tuning. Bowing on a violin can take a lot of work, practicing in front of a mirror to get the angle right is useful.
I don't know where you are in the world, but I ma doing a class in Birmingham uk or I can do skype lessons.
Nothing new, just a rehash of what blues guitarist have been playing for years. I wonder if this "violin" is tuned as a guitar eadgbe or as a violin gdae? if you have anything original it would be great to hear it.
Re This is just a rehash, well that's how I hear it. I don't claim to be doing anything radically new< I'm just enjoying playing with the track and with the sounds, and I haven't copied or studied any guitarists licks although there are little bits of Sugar Cane, JLP, Stuff Smith and Vassar that I have stolen over the years.
If you want to hear original tunes I have recorded, if you google and search itunes and myspace you will find some things.
This is really, really, really awesome!!! If I would hear this without knowing that it´s a violin, I´d say: This is a really great blues-guitar player!
