  • this was the first straight razor shaving video I'd watched years before. Still warm, still nice to watch. Thank you.

  • how hard is it to keep this kind of a razor sharp

  • have you ever cut yourself on the face with that razor?

  • if i used a cut throat it'd probably look like a scene from Saw afterwards.

  • *ahem* That's not a proper lather...

  • how wet is that brush when you started loading

  • 5:12, the Fool's Pass!

  • @shavefan12 How is it the fool's pass? Some people dont have the irritation on their mustache area. I can do an against grain pass on my mustache

  • @goatkiller68 "the fool's pass" is the name of the pass where you go against the grain with the blade moving IP towards the nose. I wish I could go ATG on my lip, I just get ingrown hairs.

  • @shavefan12 hehe nicely spotted.

  • nicest shave i have seen so far!

  • Ahh geez. A couple of times I thought you were going to cut yourself. I want to start using a straight razor as well but I'm too bloody scared.

  • For some mysterious reason that I can`t explain I find this relaxing to drift along with & watch : )

  • Comment removed

  • lol, you gotta be able to grow a little somethin before you can shave a little somethin off ;P

  • shaving shaving shaving shaving shaving shaving shaving ... THAT NIGHT IN TORON'OOOOOOOO!

  • fantastic shave !! are you a barber ?

  • You aren't suppose to go in circles using the brush..you are suppose to put the soap on like paint in a down stroke. Reason is, your brush will last much longer

  • @Greenmarine6 Check out any videos Mantic59 and yes you do use a combination of circular and paintbrush strokes

  • @Greenmarine6

No your supposed to apply with circles becouse it help remove any bumps and dead skin from your face. It also helps lift the whiskers up into position to be cut without having to scrape your skin. You should only need to use brush strokes once you have finished applying the soap to your face.

  • this guy looks like Ben savage, boy meets world.

  • Great song

  • very helpful thanks

  • Cool vid. I started using straight razor this week and he make's it look so easy.... but it isn't. Nice technique. Thanks.

  • hees shaving to show you peepol how to do it

  • @Vrizla

you must know nothing about shaving

  • you face look sore / red. gillette fusion?

  • Nice job. You are steady and confident.

The women in the room want to see you topless.

  • internet=Win

  • you have no type of facial hair rite now. why are you even shaving??

  • aka the weeaboo's shave

  • I just bought a Feather "Artist Club" RG Razor on Saturday, but did not receive it yet. I was excited to see someone shaving with a feather on video and excited that you didn't cut yourself. I keep hearing horror stories of how sharp these razors are. They don't look all that hard to use to me now that I watched this video. Thanks for the video.

  • @legatoistheman

I just ordered the same one yesterday and am awaiting it to be delivered. Has yours come yet and have you tried it? Is it good? Any cuts? Thanks

  • @traderjoes I've shaved with it 5 times. I got pro guard blades and they prevent most cuts. You need to be really light handed with it, really takes no pressure even after 5 shaves on the same blade. Also make sure you never go from side to side. I usually cut myself accidently going sideways, but the cuts arent bad enough that they bleed a lot. Get a good brush and a good cream or soap. Try trumpers cream or mama bears or gentlemans quarter soaps. I can personally vouch for these items.

  • which is better...a razor or an electric shaver???

  • All these videos of shaving on youtube are great but there is one thing. ALL the guys who are shaving have no facial hair what so ever. We need to see a shave with a 4 or 5 day growth, not 17 year old peach fuzz or an asian guy with 4 hairs on his face using a $500 razor.

  • @rick136nyc Stubble is hard to see on camera, and especially so if the person has light-colored hair.

  • that cut at 5:12 is a risky move! i never go upwards when doing that part!

  • TA DAA! And he lands the feathers double pass with a fools pass and low lather. Nice job.

  • Where did you get that mug, it's kind of unique.

  • I put bumble bees in a cup and run it over my face

  • it's a gentlemens artform, that is dying, I personally enjoyed watching this, and it was useful as I might be buying one of the japanese razors. sometimes I like to let my facial hair grow, and simply don't bother with shaving etc, also I might like the variety .Also, I never claim to be a gentleman, lol. But, if you have asteady job, or like certain daily rituals, I think the art of shaving is highly recommendable. These days people just don't give themselves enough times for things like these

  • Good shaving music.

  • I think this guy is pretty good with the razor, but I have some doubts about how sharp it is. At 5:20 he bumps on the chin toward the lower lip and nothing happens! If I did the same I would be bleeding like the guy in Reservoir Dogs!!

  • feather blades are stupidly sharp.. he may as well be shaving with a light saber.

  • @vthomlinson are they really? do you prefer straight razors?

  • Music is horrible.

  • kantelier - you are comparing two different things. If you are pushed for time, a cartridge razor is the thing for you, although razor burn and ingrown hairs can be a problem. If you have the time and want to make facial hair removal a pleasure, then straight razors, cream, brushes etc some folk enjoy. Given that your post was in such poor english, would suggest that you are time poor and therefore a cartridge razor is for you. Or are you a brit?

  • I have a couple questions. Can you shave with a straight edge with gillete shaving cream?and I just ordered a straight razor, the kind with the disposible blades LOL how are they for shaving? Thanks

  • @sz42781 im guessing its a wilkinson sword. correct? i find that they are not very good at shaving. they work great for haircuts. but i tried shaving with one and the blades only seem to last half my face before they get grabby.

but seeing as this post is 2 months old you should have your own opinions about it. i'd like to hear them.

  • It says the shaving factory on it, and the blades are "derby" I set it up with half the blade exposed and I can make perfectly manicured beards. I recently tried useing the full blade. I shaved half my face, it got real close, when I got to my chin witch is od shaped an rough I cut my self so bad I couldent go out. Thank god! I dident make it to my neck. Thesy say start on balloons.

  • @sz42781 ouch yea here's to hoping that never happens again. but yea i bought a Wapieneca wapi yesterday. just waiting on it now. the only thing that im worried about is keeping the razor sharp. i bought a strop also so as long as i can strop properly i should be good.

  • @zomgz932 The razor I have has little disposable razors that you insert. There sharp little things and cut real well. You dont need a strope for this LOL.

  • @sz42781 yea i know. i kinda find that cheating a bit though part of the fun of strait razors is the matinence. once you can get a strait razor shaving sharp then you can pass those techniques down to your other blades. (given your a knife nut)

  • @zomgz932 I hear yah. Yeh I got it as a stepping stone. It costs 30 bux for 300 razords and the handle. I can expose 1/2 the blade for touch up and make my beard look real sharp. like it was drawn on with a pencil.

  • @kantelier Do not ever listen to Yanks there retarded & take their pleasure with farmyard animals...

  • @ Kantelier

Do you have any idea how dumb you sound dude...

  • @kantelier

If you don't care to invest time into getting a good shave and enjoy paying too much for canned goo and cartridges that's fine, enjoy your crappy shaves and nobody is gonna take the piss out of you for it.

People who would rather pay less for a better shave would expect the same respect.

  • hey, i have been thinking of making the switch to the strait blade, thinking of using a dissposable one, feather makes such a blade, think it is a good choice?

  • Feather straights are expensive and they wont accept a standard double edged blade. Go for the Dovo stainless steel shavette, much better razor, have one myself they are awesome

  • feather straights are really expensive but try to see if someone in your area has one and try it, with a decent cream it simply glides and cuts hair nicely. Im not saying you are wrong they are insanely costly but try getting one in ebay or the straightrazorplace clasifieds, you won't regret it

  • YES! Let me tell you something, the difference between RG and DX feather razors are the metal (stainless steel gives better balance than brass) color and material (RG is a plastic polymer while DX can sport wood or polymer)

They are really costly but you ain't gonna regret it, your shaves will go from chore to pleasure.

  • maybe he made 2 shaving videos and didn't want to wait a day to grow hair

    just a guess :)

  • Seriously I had more hair when I was 10. I got more hair on my A%#.

  • its cool and all, but why am i watching a guy shave on youtube...

  • Because it's relaxing. Kind of watching fishes swimming in a bowl.

  • @geiswiteb good point....

  • @geiswiteb why did you look it up?

  • @geiswiteb hmmm...i think you'll have to answer that yourself.

  • @geiswiteb cause life is boring,and i already jerked off 3 times..not to this..

  • @geiswiteb Because he knows how to treat his skin well, probably unlike you who merely scrape the hair off....

  • @geiswiteb Don't know, you tell us.

  • what's the song?

  • @msolbiati Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

  • @msolbiati ...it's listed right under the vid.

  • So how do you store that in your bathroom when not in use. Thats the only thing keeping me from owning one.

  • i store my soap in a bowl, have a cup for lather building, and a brush stand for my brush. I have a folding razor, and I place it by the tang leaning on the brush stand. pretty neat little group. I could even put my soap bowl on top of my cup.

  • that brush looks very smooth!

  • wow

  • get yourself a double duck, you wont need to shave twice.

  • That razor is no joke. Where did you get that?

  • man with a straight razor one shave would do it for me gotta get me one of these soon.

  • Tragically Hip, right on. Fellow Canadian are ya Sir?

  • does using a brush make a difference

  • Yes!

  • The difference doesn't really lie with the brush than with the shaving soap/cream.

Using ''natural'' soap is much less irritating for the skin instead of the chemical foam creating a ''fake'' lubricant on the skin. The brush is used to massage the face and ''foam'' the soap, giving a MUCH smoother shave.

Think of an electric razor as sand paper and traditional shaving as ''baby-skin-approved smooth''.

  • its not a holder, its a blade!

  • nice video but the music is terrible!!

  • nice, thanks, but i have a doubt...

why did you shaved more than once?

  • He's doing beard reduction passes. First with the grain, then across the grain, then against the grain. It gives you a much closer shave with much less irritation.

If you're interested in learning how to wet shave properly, visit Badger & Blade forums. They have a newbie forum that'll get you started. I went to a double edged safety razor after many years of using an electric. I'll never go back.

  • Don't forget mantic59 here on YouTube. Will give you tips on Double-edge Razor shaving and details on brushes, lathering etc.

  • Thanks :D

  • This man, like many other straight razor shavers, is thorough. Once with the grain, once across the grain, and once more against the grain.

  • do ya know were i can get a normal barber knife

  • Is it any easier with the non-folding straight edge? It seems that you can keep it more steady because the blade does not fold. Am I right?

  • nice job. but you look a little young to shave in the first place.

  • what a beast

  • great music. loop it mate.

  • nice shave man, I use a normal straight razor, but that fixed blade looks really interesting

  • wow...i feel really weird now...i just finished watching a dude shave his whole face for 9:00 mins. 0.0 i think i need a nap.....

  • now that is a real man shave lol

    max respect

  • Well done! I am planning on trying out the straight razor but foresee some blood in my near future. that was pro!

  • I always wanted to get a straight razor a quality french german or jap one, it is truly a gentlemans shave, anyway, by the way as previously posted alittle more sidburn and you would look more GQ, take care brother

  • I appreciate what you are able to do, but your beard is very light and your face has no tough contours.

  • I agree with this, I have very heavy stubble... hoping wet shaving helps me get a closer shave without bleeding from my neck. :)

  • Wow, that was fascinating to watch, thanks!

Just a comment, I think longer sideburns (mid-ear or so) would suit you better... think about it

  • I have to say your making it look easy. However, after reading other viewer comments I gather it isn't. Really cool.

  • shaving with a pocket samurai, you the man

  • i saw differnt vids and i everyone the person shaved itself twice or three times...

are there any reasons or are these single-bladed razors not as accurat as modern razors like gillette, wilkinson...?

  • People who shave with straight razors or safety razors spend more time and attention shaving because they want a good, close shave.

It isn't because using a single hand sharpened blade to cut whiskers does less than 5 machined blades in series.

A single pass with a straight razor is at least as close as a single pass with a 5-bladed cartridge razor. In fact, it is far superior. The 3 pass shave represents a commitment to excellence in shaving. A commitment to a babys butt shave.

  • thx 4 explanation!

  • The Feather razor is the most dangerous shaving blade on earth. One slip and you're done. Even hard core traditional shaving enthusiasts are afraid of the infamous Feather. It's made by the same people who make surgical instruments and from a region where people make world renowned swords. If you think this is easy, try again. He made a very hard and dangerous task look quite easy. He deserves props. But don't try this unless you are willing to risk half your face falling on the floor.

  • I agree. A Shavette with a Feather blade is the ultimative skill test for a straight razor shaver: you need a very light touch, extremely precise strokes, lots of attention, and definitely more whiskers than the shaver of this video. I first managed to get a blood-free shave with that combination after a good dozen of shaves (and a whole year of practise with real razors before), and only with two passes (with the third I would probably overshave). DEEP RESPECT FOR THIS BLOKE!!

  • There are a sharper things out there than Feather blades, you just need to get a real straight razor. But agreed, the Feathers are very easy to cut yourself with since they are as unforgiving as it probably gets, so respect for this shaver is well placed! :)

  • is your razor homemade or factory produced? and if it is hand made is it made of tomahagane?

  • He is using a manufactured razor. It is an excellent razor.

Tomahagane is used by masters who create samurai swords. Those razors cost about 1300 American dollars. The one he is using costs about 200.

  • the lather looked a little dry

  • i stay away from shaver that could kill me

  • Let me ask something, if i try this is there a possibility I might cut my cheek off? also can I get this razor for under 100 and where

  • i really really really want to but a merkur shaver the single blade one and im just about to start shaving im 16 i use an electric shaver but my dad was right the single blade one is all i need

  • I bet this guy wins at everything in life. He has ninja-smooth skin. After he finishes shaving he probably dons a black suit and slings a katana over his back and goes to work.

  • Nah, he'll just use that razor of his.

  • ninja-smooth lol

  • he makes it easy cuz it is

i am an aspiring barber whos is only 16

i am doing my apprenticeship at the barber shop

and i figured out how to use the straiht razor in 5 mins

now i can give anyone including my self a shave

  • I see the soap cake and I've got a better idea: try Tom's of Maine Natural Conditioning Shave Cream. Your not resurrecting suds from a solid state, but coaxing them from a cream. You place it in the basin with the warm water for your face wash and let it soften a bit. Just a dab in your dad's old coffee mug and then go to town. You've got to work it a bit to get the fatty bits to break down, but is it ever worth it. I'm here to tell you. Enough for you and your girl. Mint and Calendula

  • He makes it look so easy.

  • I've used this razor before with a professional blade and it was a bloodbath every time. Oddly enough, the pro super blades don't give me any trouble.

  • PLEASE tell me the name of this song and who sings it! I love this song!

  • Haha it's Bobcaygeon by the Tragically Hip. I had to ask this question too, it's such a great song. :-)

  • thanks a bunch

  • Yeah man no problem!

  • i'm really surprised the tragically hip aren't more of a global success..

their albums ahve varied a bit over the years, but it's all good, and there's gonna be atleast one album you really enjoy.

  • The most worthwhile music is seemingly the less apprichiated. A paradox that has never sat comfortably in my mind, the same goes for shaving. The straight is just natural and so obviously right once you tried it out, in comparison with the boring nonsensual disposible crap.

  • where the hell did you get this think please tell me =)

  • oh my god, that looks sooo nice, shaving with that thing

  • I'm tired of cleaning my gillette blade every 2nd stroke, i have to try a feather/cutthroat razor.. which one is better btw?

  • all personal choice really. i prefer throat cuts due to the folding handle. it fits neatly between the ring finger and pinkie, and gives a nice secure feeling. then again, i use both, and i kinda alternate back and forth. try both, and see which one's for you

  • i'm don't have any experience with single edge razors but, are you supposed to shave side ways and go aganist the grain like he did?

  • Is the only difference in technique (between shaving with a non-folding razor and a folding one) that you have the folding one partially folded while shaving? That is how I have seen all the other youtubers do it, at least.

  • Cool video man, really relaxing with that song... I just downloaded it! By the way, ignore all those haters, it's just like you said, shaving's kind of a dying art. I have a DE and I enjoy shaving with it, and I too do three passes. I figure I can take 10 minutes of my life and just relax and shave. Great video, great song, great technique (despite what others have said, because everyone has their own unique technique I think)!

  • Whoever snapfreak is apparently has way too much time on his hands! Tearing down people's techniques for shaving? Hahahaha!

  • well he is right about a few things, but only in a general sense. making such long strokes is usually not a good idea for most people. and the other thing he was right about is, heh, I don't see any whiskers on that guy's face either...looked smooth as a baby's butt before hand.

Anyway he was quite wrong about his lathering technique. Lathering on your face is a perfectly viable AND oft-preferred way of creating a lather. It certainly massages the lather in a lot better.

  • Creating a lather on your face like that will actually soften your beard a lot more than using a bowl technique. Also, that razor is just fine. I love the look of it.

And it seems to me he DOES have a block of shaving soap and a brush...so the only point he has is that he should be using a folding razor? Pff...lame.

  • I suppose it is a personal choice... The lathering might feel more refreshing, the lather might get a bit thicker, and you don't have to practice until you get the right amount of water... Nevertheless, the bowl technique has two big advantages: the lather won't dry in your brush between the passes, and if you have kept your brush in very hot water (inside the bowl) your lather will be warm, what makes the brushing very nice, and might open the pores a bit more.

  • The name of the song is Bobcaygeon (sp?) by the Tragically Hip, and one of my favorite songs. Awesome vid, great song too!

  • What is the name of the song playing?

  • @willyfoofoo444 the song is Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up

  • the strait shaver looks good and all but what about under the nose, i use the rolling razor and it gets the hard to shave places perfectly

  • i am proprietor of edward and parnell barber shoppe, i recieved on of these straights as a birthday gift. i was amazed by the quality and ease of use. i cant imagine using anything else. certainly a fine tool indeed. for someone who does straight razor face shaves all day, everyday, i highly recommend this.

  • Shaving with a modern plastic disposable cartridge multi-million dollar advertising campaign promoted doohickey is a chore.

Shaving the right way is a pleasure.

  • it seems to me that it took him ~3:40 to shave. and then he did the second and third pass. You do three passes with your mach3 in 4 mins? I found that mach/safety doesn't do anything on second/third pass but irritate me... as for "how it looks" I don't think that this is "optimal" light to see the quality... but you can do it just as a ritual... to focus and relax?

  • i shave every other day, but i have a goatee so i only have to shave a little and it's funny i attract more women when i have my goatee compared to when i dont. but most of the women are more mature then the one my friends pick up so guess its a trade off.

  • You're an idiot.

  • well for starters the whole if you shave it comes in thicker is not true in the least. Secondly go kill yourself

  • cutting your hair dosnt alter the speed or thickness of the growth.

  • Wow! Soon you will grow hair under your armpits and pubic area. Then you will be a man. till then, you just a hairless boy.

  • Man shaving against grain irritates my skin like crazy. I always go down and I get a good shave without irritation

  • Make sure you have a real steep angle on that blade, hold the blade flat on your face and slightly raise the spine. The idea is for the blade to glide across the skin and not scrap across. Too wide of an angle leads to scraping and that gives razor burn. Make sure the lather is thick like rustyblade has it. The lather is about 50% of the shave and is the only thing between your face and the razor blade.

  • Goto classicshaving.com Look in Feather No-Sharpening razors.

  • Very nice! Anybody know where I could get my hands on one of those japanese razors?

  • cvvcxvzzxcv

  • thats a nice vid man.

nice blade, i never seen that kind before,

    but i want one.!

    nice technique

  • dude, i love your technique.

will you ever make a video using a regular straight razor for those like myself who are trying to learn how to shave properly w/ a cutthroat?

  • nice job, BUT it tooks a lot of time, in 9min i shave my face 3 times, he have lot of time.. daily 9min = 3285min in one year

  • How much time do you spend on your hobbies? When you shave with traditional methods that's what it becomes, a hobby to be enjoyed and not a chore to be endured.

  • good fucking point
