In 1990, Clyde held MJ to 16 points in a Blazer victory.

In 1991, Clyde averaged 29.5 points on 59% shooting against MJ, and the Blazers swept the Bulls.

In 1992, Clyde averaged 32 ppg against MJ.

So Clyde fared much better against Jordan, historically, than most people think. That's why people realistically thought Clyde might be as good as MJ prior to the 92 Finals. He played him better than anyone else.

Of course, Jordan went off in Game 1 of the Finals, and the rest is history.

Clyde and MJ were two different players. Clyde was never a pure scorer. Early in his career, he played alongside guys like Kiki Vandeweghe and Jim Paxson, established All-Stars who got a lot of touches.

Meanwhile, MJ played with crap players and took 60% of his team's shots.

Between 92 and 95, Clyde was hobbled with knee injuries, so I throw those years out.

Between 87 and 92, Drexler played MJ very well, as I said below.

I know this is kind of late, but Jordan hardly abused Clyde in this game. Drexler's line was: 42 points, 9 assists, 8 steals and 5 rebounds. He also blocked MJ's 3 pointer late in the game to preserve the Portland victory, after which MJ laid a vicious flagrant foul on him.

If you take away Game 1 of the 1992 Finals, Jordan didn't "own" Drexler. He outplayed him most of the time, certainly. But Clyde held his own a lot better than people think.

People make me laugh with this nonsense that the NBA is "better now", lol. How many alley oops do you see any more? How many fast break finishes? How many guys can palm the ball as easily as these guys could? Players today are bulkier. That's it. They're also far slower, less agile, and dumber. MJ went up against far more SKILLED players at his position during this era than Kobe has in his. Guys like Jeff Malone, Rolando Blackmon, and Mitch Richmond have been forgotten.

Whenever I watch games from the 80s I can't help but marvel at the passing qualities and unselfishness displayed by the teams. It saddens me, because I know it won't be like that again, ever. Sure, every now and then you have teams like the Pistons or Spurs where everyone understands their role to perfection, but those qualities aren't appreciated in todays celebrity-obsessed society. People would rather see a ball hogging star going off for 40 or 50, therefore GMs built their teams that way.

There's nothing wrong with a guy getting 50, but do it in the FLOW of the game. The game today has very little flow. The level of playoff basketball today is equivalent to the level of regular season ball back then.

Even Jordan didn't do it always in the flow of the game. The beauty of basketball, or any team sport for that matter, is the team play on both ends. There's nothing more satisfying than a team that works like a Swiss clockwork and makes all the right decisions on the court.

Everyone talks about the greatness of the Bulls-Celtics series and completely ignores the amount of mistakes/mental errors committed by both teams. A dramatic series for sure, but it wasn't great basketball in my opinion.
