Leon Redbone is one of the coolest cats ever, because he is what he seems, it's not an act! He's also a great musician, one of the best crooners ever (great to listen to if you want to learn to sing) and just an all round character!
I agree with those who say he's under-rated, though I can't tell you how many people I've introduced him to who are now fans! Please come to London Leon! CW Stoneking, eat your heart out! This guy's the real McCoy!
My daddy would have loved this guy!! I know that I do. Hope he'll perform at my coffeehouse in the near future (It's a big coffeehouse)! We love him in Carlisle, MA!!!! Oh yes we do! And I talk about him ALL the time when he's gone. ;-)
I saw Leon perform last night.... what an enjoyable evening! He said his doctor told him to take one pill 3 times a day. He replied to him "I can't do that"
I'M AN UPCOMING BLUES ARTIST IN NEED OF SUBSCRIBERS.... My style is 1930ish blues. My songs are original. I hope and goal is to bring back a forgotten sound to this new generation. Thanks to all those who will subscribe. My first upload song and introduction to the world will be soon,
Man.... He is such a fantastic guitar player. Once, just ONCE I would like to see him bust out a Jimmy-Page-type guitar solo. It would be no problem for him, obviously. =)
I have been fortunate enough to have seen Leon live twice. My father used to sing me some of these songs when I was three or four...I'm 52 now, and they're still magic. He's good by himself, but I really enjoyed him with a few extra musicians, expecially clarinet, tuba etc.
@bluestreakbuck >>>>>>>yah! this guy's my sister Dottie's favorite Dude. Dr. John is another and Tony Rice's song about a 'carpentar' on his "Church Street Blues, "CD. She also loves the music of Keith Whitley.
I live in Australia, he visited only once {I then think the drama with his Record Company started}.
When the stage lights came on there was a man in a white suit, Panama hat, sitting in a whicker chair surrounded by palms.
He never left the seat, sang the 1st song which lives on in my memory from 1981 and still my fav Champagne Charlie. Harmonica, whistle, this guy blew me away, one of the great at old style music that he and people like Ry Cooder and Tom Waites keep alive.
Leon Redbone is keeping this great music and the style it was played in back in the 20's and 30's alive. The cat's a master of the idium. He's the link to men like Blind Willie McTell and all those street serenaders. Leon, always a pleasure.
You don't have to like him, but Tiny Tim was not a flash-in-the-pan. Yeah, he was an odd fellow, no two ways about it. But he was an acknowledged expert on that old music, he performed it 'cause he loved it, and he sang it from his heart.
This comment is comming from a guy with a pretty wide range in music (metalica, avenged sevenfold, hip hop, oldies, punk etc...) I have to say Leon is as good as they get.A true artist!I just hope I get to see him live someday.
Tiny Tim may be thought of as a novelty acy or a "gimmick" but he had a true affinity for the music of that era, its obvious in his talent. Neither of these greats are just "acts"...theyre the real deal.
Leon is king - but his sets are way too short. I've seen him three times and the longest that he played was 55 minutes (first time I saw him it was only 45 minutes). He's got way too many great songs to play such short sets (he didn't play "Seduced" at any of those gigs much to my dismay) - - a little ain't enough!
Yeah, that's a shame, Gut. I just saw him last night in Three Oaks Michigan. He played a full hour and a half set. Simply fantastic, and a great sense of humor. He had the audience laughing between every song. His whistling portion of his show almist had you in tears. It was amazing.
Leon Redbone has been around since at least 1970 - saw him at the St Lawrence Centre in Toronto in '73. Don't compare him to a flash-in-the-pan like Tiny Tim.
Leon and Leo Kottke are playing here on the 22nd of this month! I'm stoked, I've seen Leo Kottke here once before when I was first getting into guitar. Inspirational to say the least. . .
Once I stumbled - in my hectic life - and heard the softest of voices whisper a tune to my ear. Time was still and the clouds rolled no further until the tip of a hat signaled all was clear.
believe it or not but im trying to lead my guitar playing and voice towards leons style, but i dont think ill ever be able to wistle like that. great vid
