I'm going into my 2nd / 3rd year as a cellist. Let me tell you, I love playing it and all, but the cello parts suck. In only a handful or so songs, such as Viva la Vida (Coldplay) and Secrets (OneRepublic), are the cello parts interesting. What do you play?

The main difference I would say between stringed instruments and wind instruments is probably, well, obviously tone/sound, but in technique, a stringed instrument already has the entire range there to use, while on wind you need to push harder and adjust to new ways of playing. But wind instruments don't really have to pay attention to bowings, and it's a lot easier to play dynamically (in my opinion).

I play french horn and double bass. :p

Relax your shoulders and lower both of your elbows. That bow grip looks painful; maybe try using the traditional proper technique. Keep practicing.

@sweetlikeADAM If I'm not mistaken, Joshua Bell, a very famous violinist, uses a very improper technique, and I don't see that altering his infamy. If anything, it accentuates it. I've been playing for 10 years, and I think I know what I'm doing for the most part. Also, my bow grip is not painful. :)

Some of the most amazing musicians, cellists included, do not play according to the "proper standard", and that, in itself, has beauty.
