@banjobubby the viola da gamba - a six stringed instrument, not seen too often but is making a slow come back....an interesting history and explanation of the viola da gamba is available on several web sites.

the fabulous 1st violist Herbert Blendinger (left), who soon will be celebrating his 75th anniversary, is suffering from several strokes for 20+ years and had to abbandon playing completely. He then concentrated more on composing - and is a reknowned composer on his own. This fine recording must be already from the 70ties.

This concerto is so much fun to play; for once the violas have the spotlight! My chamber group performed it at a recital and had such a phenomenal response to it. Gorgeous piece.
