As badass as Rocky always was/is, he never got stone cold ovations. They can't even use Austin as a heel as we saw with the whole "What" thing and being Mcmahons buddy. They tried and couldn't get heel heat. Rocky is a great heel. It started that way and happened again unplanned against Hogan at WM 18. Granted, it was Canada where Hogan owned back in the day, but Rocky rolled with that shit and it was fantastic.

He went from average star to superstar. Austin was so good he got fans to be behind over bret who was well loved and respected before him. People cheered for him over the boy toy shawn michaels. Stone cold had to retire and did to let others shine, the didn't have but choose to because of the movies which is where his popularity came. We can compare the two superstars, and one or the other might come out as winner for some of us, but it is there rivalry that has caused all the buzz, the rivalry put The Rock on the map, it took Austin to the highest level.
As both said once earlier that in this business their motto is to be the absolute best and that is what has made their Rivalry the Greatest........The Pursue to be The Best !!
So, in all even though Austin is Austin, even though he can own The Rock, even though Rock became The Rock on the opportunity grabbed in the absence of Austin, The Rock has become more than simply a guy who is compared to Austin, he is a guy who has evolved with the time, whose jokes are intelligent yet cocky, who is funny yet electrifying and who can literally play around with the crowd on his whims and still be loved, who can be face and heel and damn who can be so good in both other than him
Given the persona Austin was carrying, it was more than good enough in attitude era to pull crowd but i am not convinced that he could have pulled it afterwards had he been able to continue wrestling while Rock has been the more flexible one, he evolves and brings changes with time and that keeps him interesting. So in a longer term of period Rock in my opinion could have pulled more crowd then anybody in business because he knows better how to sell himself and more so the opponent to the crowd.
About selling the merchandise, the Rock got as short time as short his career was in wwf. He became face for 2000 and 2001, before that he was the 2nd best guy, before that he was one mid-carder, after 2001 he was more a case of in-out in wwe.
So, whatever time he got as face to sell merchandise, to be at no.3 or 4 on the most selling list is in itself quite an achievement.
In US it is more likely that Austin is more popular that The Rock but same thing is not assured in rest of the world. When you see youtube you can see Rock getting good support from its fanbase around the globe.
A fair comparison between the two won't be the one stage and two facing each other for crowd support.
Austin might will win that (though it will be huge tussle for many before making there mind) since he had the edge over The Rock of dominating him when he was the Top card and Rock was still the mid-card.

Everyone becomes a mid-card so does the Rock before having the shot on being the top dog in business. The comparison that he was the 2nd best guy behind stonecold isn't fair, since it was always demanded from him to put Austin ahead of him. Austin was the main crowd puller at that time and will always have this edge over Rock of being face inspite of Rock being there in the same era.
Stonecold was the main reason for people to stick to attitude era and for the survival of RAW.
Rock took it one step further, in the absence of Austin not only he maintained the ratings, he took it further, isn't it incredible too, to take wwf to higher heights in the absence of the top card like Austin who is someone claimed to be the most popular.
They say reaching to top could still be an easy task but remaining there is surely more tough but then Rock and co. did it successfully.

Also African-American began to watch wrestling because of him. What also made Rock better was that he would job to any wrestler, which Austin rarely did. Steve Austin and the attitude he put into his character is the reason Raw's ratings went from 2.2 to 4.8, over-doubling the ratings is beyond insane, and Stone Cold did that! Rock was a mid-carder but then he got creative and insanely over and was always 2nd best to him in that era. So while Rock may be more main-stream popular today, he was never as important to the industy then Steve Austin. And that's the bottom line.

Its always been like this since the days of Hogan. Austin at the time was almost untouchable. Rock came from no where and challenged his fame. So in a sense he was The Peoples Champion because the people not fancy promotion made him popular.

As badass as Rocky always was/is, he never got stone cold ovations. They can't even use Austin as a heel as we saw with the whole "What" thing and being Mcmahons buddy. They tried and couldn't get heel heat. Rocky is a great heel. It started that way and happened again unplanned against Hogan at WM 18. Granted, it was Canada where Hogan owned back in the day, but Rocky rolled with that shit and it was fantastic.

In the earlier 90s wrestlers actually wrestled and even i was surprised at how good of a wrestler steve was bc i realized the potential that he could have been even bigger. His wrestling style reflected his technique bc with all persona chages he wrestled differently proving his versatility as a wrestler and what the hell do charisma skills have to doing with wrestling skills? Stone cold had to retire and did to let others shine, the didn't have but choose to because of the movies which is where his popularity came. And yeah stone cold career was longer but he was unappreciated back then becuase of the pre-attitude era pg era where good guys always won and everything was strictly wrestling and not personal. But austin was one of the the people to begin, highlight, and even sum it up. When you think attitude era you picture austin not rock. Because truth is austin had huge wwf moments and matches unlike rock. Sure he faced brock, hogan, and golberg but those matches were simply fronters.

I like the rock but love stone cold and would say maybe he's a better wrestler then stone cold but not a superstar until i watched old matches of stone cold .I myself now grown just now notice how athletic and an actual great wrestler steve was. Because of his neck injury and knee problems he was limited to wat he could do. And I haven't even seen the rock do those things.

I alwayz love stone cold over the rock because stone cold was very unpredictable. You never knew what he was goin to do and that is what made me love him along with the fact that he was hardcore.

Given the persona Austin was carrying, it was more than good enough in attitude era to pull crowd but i am not convinced that he could have pulled it afterwards had he been able to continue wrestling while Rock has been the more flexible one, he evolves and brings changes with time and that keeps him interesting. So in a longer term of period Rock in my opinion could have pulled more crowd then anybody in business because he knows better how to sell himself and more so the opponent to the crowd.

About selling the merchandise, the Rock got as short time as short his career was in wwf. He became face for 2000 and 2001, before that he was the 2nd best guy, before that he was one mid-carder, after 2001 he was more a case of in-out in wwe.
So, whatever time he got as face to sell merchandise, to be at no.3 or 4 on the most selling list is in itself quite an achievement.

Austin might will win that (though it will be huge tussle for many before making there mind) since he had the edge over The Rock of dominating him when he was the Top card and Rock was still the mid-card.

For those who claim The Rock to be always 2nd best behind Austin i will agree but take a notice of below point:
Everyone becomes a mid-card so does the Rock before having the shot on being the top dog in business. The comparison that he was the 2nd best guy behind stonecold isn't fair, since it was always demanded from him to put Austin ahead of him. Austin was the main crowd puller at that time and will always have this edge over Rock of being face inspite of Rock being there in the same era.

Rock took it one step further, in the absence of Austin not only he maintained the ratings, he took it further, isn't it incredible too, to take wwf to higher heights in the absence of the top card like Austin who is someone claimed to be the most popular.
They say reaching to top could still be an easy task but remaining there is surely more tough but then Rock and co. did it successfully.

@BSabres87 When Rock was a mid-carder, he was getting heat like the heel of the company when he was with the nation and during his short face turn, he was getting huge ovations all while still facing midcarders like Mark Henry. Also African-American began to watch wrestling because of him. What also made Rock better was that he would job to any wrestler, which Austin rarely did. Austin was more important during 97-98, early 99, but after that was when The Rock became more popular.

Steve Austin and the attitude he put into his character is the reason Raw's ratings went from 2.2 to 4.8, over-doubling the ratings is beyond insane, and Stone Cold did that! Rock was a mid-carder but then he got creative and insanely over and was always 2nd best to him in that era. So while Rock may be more main-stream popular today, he was never as important to the industy then Steve Austin. And that's the bottom line.

Vince has always pushed who he likes. Before this they had the HBK Hitman rivalry. Because he wanted Hbk to be the man he was (despite Bret being the better wrestler). Its always been like this since the days of Hogan. Austin at the time was almost untouchable. Rock came from no where and challenged his fame. So in a sense he was The Peoples Champion because the people not fancy promotion made him popular.
