  • WOW!! you guys are tight..had to suscribe, and hit the replay AND the volume

  • Man these are good memories... to sit back and just play groove oriented stuff with this band was a dream come true. :) Greg Nagy

  • This ia great! And the organ sounds just like the real thing!

  • well funky you funky groovster

  • Does anybody know the chords of the main organ accompainiment that occur in what sounds like a dotted eight - sixteenth - eigth pattern? I believe they are Bb 7 Bb7 Bb7 Db7, but what inversions are used to get the proper sound. Also, what are the chords for the turn around? Thank you

  • Great job, Jim & company.

I have the same rig and would never consider using "the real thing", like I used to.

Those "purists" wouldn't pass a blindfold test, belive me!

  • @martyg374 The first night Jim brought the rig to the gig, I closed my eyes and honestly couldn't tell the difference. Granted I am just a guitarist...lol, but I also co-produced six records that Jim is on. :) I listen... With the right adjustments you can get the XK-3 sounding very organic.

  • Holy shit. This is a groove.

  • Hello good people ~ I saw the end of a documentary on this band on a local tv station in the SF Bay Area and was blown away by the musicianship and serious groove going on. I'm a singer/actress/tpt player and I am hooked on your band! I went to iTunes and bought "Change Our Ways" immediately. Great to find you guys! If I'm working anywhere near where you're playing, I'll be there.

  • @debdelmastro I am very proud of "Change Our Ways." I sure do hope you enjoyed it. :) Greg Nagy

  • Who are these moaning minnies? First time I ever did a "hammond" blues gig I used the "organ" (I used the term loosely) sound from a Roland MT32. It was dire to a purist's ear. Guess what, the audience still clapped! Because they listened to the music and didn't spend the entire gig dissecting the organ patches. A badly-maintained B3/C3 sounds far worse than a decent clone. Ask me how I know :)

  • I don't know who the jerk was that gave you a thumbs down for this, but I'm sure the person was jealous of your playing ability. You are in my opinion the best ever at the beast. I wish I could play a fraction as good.

  • Songs like this really bring the funk out of me. Even hearing it for the first time it's got that classic rhythm i can get down to and catch every snare and high hat. Great post, great group, great sound.

  • I'm a hardcore Booker T and the MG's fan and I wish they played this as good as these guys do. These days Booker T and the MG's phone their gigs in. Great job guys

  • Typical thin sound of digital. The Leslie gets a better sound from anything but there is nothing yet to be compared with an actual electromechanical Hammond organ with a tube preamp like in a B3/C3/A100 models . Stuff known as 'the real thing'.

  • Live Music is best, especially when played on a real B3 and a Leslie

    WOOT......... good job boys

  • This band has been around for years in Lansing Michigan and they are still gettin it on! Yea!

  • Would prefere a telecaster with humbucker picks....like steve Cropper, but still not bad

  • @ReinhardDanzinger Yeah, I would have dug one too. Had a tele back in the 90's but like an idiot sold it There is such a cool sound to those. Warm Regards, Greg Nagy

  • HOLY @^#& !! Now this is what I call MUSIC! Straight talent and love for 'Down Town Funk"

  • WOW! Very nice grooving man!

    Excelent band!

    5*****

    Greetings,

    Pedro

  • This is miles ahead of the Booker T version. I love the embellishments between the organ phrases, gives it a real downtown funky feel that is cool as hell.

  • What a killer band! They all got amazing and tasteful chops and everything fits. Don't get no better than this!

  • oh my god that is awesome!

  • Really missed hearing ORGAN bass!

  • man, 'like that grooooove

  • FAT FAT FAT!!!

  • very good, brothers

  • holy mackrel!

  • great!!!

  • Oh yeah!

I love those MF Hammond B3 Organs!

  • digi: He's actually playing anXK3-c, Hammond-Suzuki's latest clone-wheel successor to the mighty B3.

  • Damn Dude!! just watching this video has changed my mood today.......I'm fitiin' to have me a good day and not feel mizerable like I did 10m minutes ago....u one bad white boy one the B3.

  • That is some outrageous b playing! Dude you are one of the best I've ever heard. Made my day!!!

  • Which Drawbar settings are these?

  • For the main melody, I'm using 008600008 (or something similar in tone) and for comping and using a variation of 888000568 (a v-shape... adjust to taste). Hope that helps.

  • Thank you ;)

  • Heya Jim,

What registrations and settings are you using on this?

Also, are you somehow magically getting a Rhodes sound out of the drawbars, or does the XK3 have an EP patch (and if so, what other goodies does it have)?

  • Actually, I just found out there are hidden extra voices in the XK3 / XK3c. If you hold down the brake / tone / control buttons when you power on, you can go into the menu system and get a new submenu where you can turn on the extra voices, including EPs, clavinet, and vibes.

However, I'm using a Yamaha Motif ES rack for the electric piano sounds on this video, connected via MIDI to the XK3.

  • @b3groover My goodness! I read this and had to try it out for myself. Awesome! The EP 80s sounds similar to my Ensoniq EP!

  • @b3groover

Hello, I am a new XK3c user here. I could you a little help. I can reset the power switch and can find the F menu for the extra voices. How do you turn them on. I 've hit about switch, key ,gizmo but can't do it. Mine is plugged into a Leslie 3300. Thanks Howard in NH

  • Nicely Done! Good to see it played right!

    Keep Your Mojo... Mojo!

  • and that's how you do it, boys... for the rest of us: back to school :)

    good job, guys

  • Great band!! Great rendering of this classic tune!

  • Awesome playing..is that the new Suzuki hammond?..Xk model?

  • Yes, it's the XK3 with the XK traditional lower manual. I love it. Sounds killer!

Check out organissimo's album Groovadelphia; I use the XK3 / XK System exclusively on the record.

  • Do you use a leslie 122..how do they link?..sold the b-3 in '94 after coming home at three in the morning and unloading it into the garage by myself...later bought a Korg cx-3..not to pleased with it...love your playing great continuity..Jimmy would be proud!!!

  • Thanks! Yes, on Groovadelphia and this particular video, I'm using a 122. They connect via a 1122 kit from Hammond-Suzuki, which converts the 11pin of the XK3 to a 6pin output.

I use a Leslie 3300 now and I love it. 300watts of clean power with a tube preamp section for that growl. It's great!

I retired my B3 after needing back surgery to fix a herniated disc! I hear what you're saying!

  • @b3groover

    Dear Jim,

I'm Martin Puffer from the Netherlands and buy a couple of weeks ago a Hammond XK3-c

You get a great sound out of this machine, the problem that I have is that there are so many effects with all kind of parameters that without any knowledge of a Hammond player you cant get the sound as you play.

Is it posible for you to send me your setting from all the effects and parameters so that i can play with the same sound ?

    martin_puffer@planet.nl

  • could you perhaps make a tutorial on how to play hip hug her on the keyboard

  • Not a bad idea. In the meantime, do you have a question about the tune?

  • Awesome Band!Fantastic Organ Player!!!!!!

  • Excellent Thanks For Sharing KTF 5*****

  • great !!!!!!

  • Nice work Greg and company.

  • Organ player plays a peach at the beginning - it makes the song a beaut. :)

  • The B3 Player got some Nice chops!!

  • great funky groove!!!

  • That. Was. Awesome.

  • Nice, job! Jim, is that an XK system you're playing? At first I figured it was a vintage B - until I heard the electric piano solo played on the upper manual at 4:50!

  • Yes, it is an XK System with a Yamaha Motif ES Rack MIDI'd to the upper manual. Glad you dig it!

  • Nice video, Jimmy, as well as the rest of you guys - always nice to see ya. Greg: had a great time yakkin' witcha last night - glad you were able to rub some elbows with Etta's people at her concert. - Brad

  • Jim is one hell of a B3 player. Root Doctor has quite a nice bass player too, and of course this song was without their awesome singer. VERY hard to find a whole group that knows how to play. Excellent job as always.

  • damn funky as hell playin it memphis stlye

  • all that needs to be said is these guys know how to play! enough! black or white, it doesn't matter! regards, steve

  • Solid groove.

  • My kind of band....yall sho sound GOOD. I got a 4 piece band down in Orlando and we love these kinds of jam tunes. Ck out videos of my group.

  • Oh yeah....that's what I'm talking about! It sure is cold in Michigan. Maybe y'all should consider moving to Texas for the winters!!

  • Your reverence for this great music comes shining through in this soulful rendition. Nice work!

  • Nice! Wish I could hear more bass though. The Hammond work is impeccable!

  • Funky White boys doin it Booker T. Mg's style

  • I suppose being called a White Boy in this case is meant as a compliment. Yet it seems to imply that the white man is somehow naturally less able to play funk, a stereotype that at its core is simply racist, false, and offensive. Did you know that 1/2 of Booker T & the MGs were white? Are you yourself ashamed of being white? Do you like to perpetuate this polarizing stereotype?

  • relax kid. dont have an aneurysm

  • I'm glad that statement offended you as much as it did me.

  • 1st class gentlemen!

  • tasty stuff.

  • oh yes!!!! fuckin fantastic guys!

  • Very nice!

    I love the sound of a B3.

  • ooh i really enjoyed that!!! great work

  • Wonderful song and nice rendition. All the musicians did a great job. Of course I would love to play like Jim Alfredson. Bring it on home guys!!

  • @69B3 Thank you. It's a great memory for me. Jim and I are no longer with the band...but we both have fond memories. Warm Regards, Greg Nagy

  • one of my favorite jams from Stax, bass line is so catchy

  • Great from start to finish!

  • Pefect! I'm speechless! Thats so perfect! I love organisimo...!!! They practise the best music...!!!!

  • which registration is he using?

  • For the lead sound? I'm using 008 600 008. I'm not sure if that's exactly what Booker T used, but it's close.

For comping I'm using 868000567 for the most part, although you'll see I'm constantly adjusting. Thanks!

  • The Center Street's break song...Kingfisher, Oklahoma 1968

  • Very good

  • One of my all time fave jams!! Scott Wilder use this version, PLEASE! (Scott Wilder is a local talk radio show host in Dallas. He uses the original and another version as his theme song.)

  • *******stars

  • Wow, the B3 player is on FIRE!!!

  • Verra nice! I was looking for the original, gave this one a click anyway...and I like it lots.

  • That's the stuff RD. Salty!

  • I couldn't agree more with BluzCruisin' ....

    totally smokin'!! Great!

  • Nawauw, this is a nice relax peace of music. Big groooov, Nice bas, big drums, Good guitar and a funky Jim. Thats a splendid band. Love it a lot. Go on guys.

  • Cool stuff, and extremely enjoyable(including Pumpkin Pie!). :-)

  • Love it!! That really sounds great. Will come to Michigan from Indiana and hear you guys sometime.

  • Smokin!
