The university textbook provided the formulas
m = [ Σ(x_i - xbar)(y_i - ybar) ]/Σ(x_i - xbar)²
b = ybar - m·xbar
but did a poor job of explaining where these equations came from.

Awesome explanation and visualization of the problem.
Now I won't feel like a mindless robot plugging numbers into a formula to get the best fitting line.
