He's really not underrated, he's well recognised as a good guitarist. Fuck knows what the Edge is doing there, he's such a boring guitarist. He'd be screwed without his delay pedal, wanker,
@KoreyAusTex I don't think so. Seriously take away your love of U2 and listen to the Edge. Hear that? That is my guitar skills at 15 with out the effects pedals and Im not even that good. Edge can come up with some groovy sounding tunes but the fact remains that he is not that good on a technical level. So putting him on the same platform as Jimmy Page and Jack White seems like a joke.
The Edge is a joke compared to Jack White and Jimmy Page. They should of had Tom Morello if they wanted someone who knows how to master effects (and is still a great guitarist).
@jonmarc1980 You're completely right, fuck knows how he managed to get a foot in there. He is the most bog standard guitarist ever, who knows how to use effects to disguise, not that well, how average he is, they mask not enhance in his case.

@hofsteveO No? If jealousy was the influence we would be talking hard shit about Jimmy Page, because he slays the fuck out of Edge. FUCK EDGE! He's a pussy and he sucks.
while on the subject of hollowbody guitars... what's the best kind of hollowbody under 700. for a blues sound, something that can handle distortion also.
@NChin241 The Edge is probably the best guitarist up there..and I grew up with Page as tops. Jack White is outclassed here...he should pay five dollars. He's great, but in a rough alternative "ironic" way. If you really pay attention to what the Edge has done..he's incredible.
I think what they had in mind was one guitarist from every decade/ specific generation. Jack White was the heir apparent as far as guitar legends go, and while he doesn't take blearing guitar solo's like most people, he has total control over his instrument. It takes an incredible amount of skill to play the way he does, make no mistake about that.
I do appreciate The Edge but IMO Johnny Marr and his song writing capabilities and understanding of harmony trumps the Edge every time
Jack White - another product of Deetroit. He is in same vein as Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Amboy Dukes and the MC 5. He takes the Motown "soul" and channels it.
Hahaha this is so funny, three great/awesome guitar players .. AND THEY PLAY SEVEN NATION ARMY hahaha ! I respect them with all my heart, but this is just something i would have done with my friend when i played the guitar for 1 year =D
Jack is very talented, this movie changed my whole perception of him as an artist. Still, I think I would be wettin' my pants at having the Edge & JIMMY PAGE learning a song i'd written! XD
The Edge always looks out of place in this movie, like he can't keep up almost. Edge is awesome at what he does, which is effects. Jimmy Page and Jack can't work the effects like Edge. He's amazing at that. When it comes to straight guitar playing, Edge doesn't stand a chance.
Seven Nation Army is up there with the greatest songs ever. I nearly said rock songs, but there ain't a lot of different between greatest rock songs and greatest songs
I would kill everyone here and cut off my left nut just to get the sound Jack gets from whatever pedals he uses. Its so dirty and gritty; and thats something you never hear about him. Ya sure he's a great composer, innovator, and still traditional. But that setting just boosts his sound there is nothing else like it. Who needs boner pills when you have Jack playing a freaky solo with his distortion raised through the rafters?
i don't get why no one on here says anything bad about jimmy page and only jack and the edge. he has amazing talent and experience, but other than playing with a violin bow, he does nothing original and there were tons of players like him and without the rest of led zeppelin you probably wouldnt even know he was the one playing.
@shadow102994 This is honestly one of the most ridiculous criticisms of Page I have ever read. You truly believe his legacy is that he fucked around with a violin bow on occasion? He remains, hands down, one of the best guitar composers in rock history. His influence in rock is surpassed by only a handful of other guitarists. Have you actually ever listened to any Zeppelin besides Stairway to Heaven or Black Dog? His playing/writing contributed to a huge shift in rock music.
@IHaveAPodXTLive I'm not saying he isn't influential. I actually love Jimmy Page. Honestly, i think that Since I've Been Lovin' You is one of the best songs i've heard. I just think Jack White's sound is a bit more recognizable. Is Page a better player? No doubt. He's more influential too. i honestly shouldnt have even commented thanks for callin me out.
I hate they way people completelymisunderstood the idea behind this documentary. It wasnt about the BEST guitarists in the world , it was about the guitarists who revolutionised how guitar was played and what sounds you could get. Jack , Jimmy and Edge are all completely different styles and NONE could do what the others do. Like Edge or not , he was the first to completely shift guitars into a more atmospheric and melodic sound. You have to respect him as a musician and what he's done for music
I can pick up Page's and White's style if I try really hard. But how the fuck am I gonna copy all the sound of the Edge? It will take years and lots of money.
I have only seen a few excerpts of the film so I may be off base, but it feels like Jimmy is indulging a couple of junior high school kids who want to show him these cool songs they just wrote. "Very good, guys," he could justifiably say, "but I think you should practice a little more." Yeah, I know -- you can't argue with success. But you can point out lame when you see it, no matter how many records they've sold.
It was generous of Jimmy to suggest this was a song worthy of their attention -- it's just a stupid riff, repeated ad nauseam, no development. Plus Jack thinks the story of its creation is interesting, when it's not. His friend was right about the song -- "it's okay." "No, there's something here!" Jack insists. If it was Page playing this in a warmup and asked a friend what he thought, Page would have agreed with the friend that it wasn't worthy of his time and moved on.
Everybody who is dissing Edge is either A) not a guitarist, or B) is not familiar enough with U2's early songs to know that Edge doesn't need guitar effects to play. i would argue that Edge is probably the most versatile and creative of the 3 guitarists here. Not the most talented mind you. White and Page are both basically from the blues whereas Edge is a post-punk guitarist interesting in creating new sounds. Listen to what he did on October, War, or Unforgettable Fire and say he sucks.
@breton1 True man!! People don't see that U2 were a post punk band. Their early stuff sounds like the smiths etc. And zeppelin and jack white draw from the black blues. Which is different. People also hate the edge cause either they hate u2 or bono why idk. U2 is a really good band. I see them as a alternative new wave and early stuff as indie. And Page is a legend! no doubt. But jack idk i mean he is really good. I love the white stipes, raconteurs, dead weather. But his attitude brings it down
Edge is a sound architect, building vast landscapes with his effects better than anyone ever has. A true Legend in a different way than Page, who is clearly more talented.
OK, I am one of the biggest Zeppelin fans in the world, and nobody can touch Jimmy Page, HOWEVER, you have to give credit where credit is due. Jack White is amazing in his own right, and Edge is a very creative guitarist. He may not be the best in the world, but he is very knowledgable, and appears to truly love playing.. which goes a long way in my mind. Give him a little slack, but make sure you bow down when you hear Jimmy play :~)
@hiphophitler people still would have known jimmy page zeppelin was his group and he was in the yardbirds it was inevitable that he would become a rockstar
@MrErvanario That's part of who The Edge is. He's not a gunslinger guitarist, but the the sideman who supports the song instead of the playing over it. The other two are talking over each other, and he just sits back and adds input when it supports the conversation.
I don't know why The Edge is getting so much flak. I think he's just a different type of guitarist. Where the guitar comes more naturally to Jimmy and Jack, it seems like The Edge has to work really hard to play what he wants, so he uses the pedals and such to get the sounds he wants. My dad and I saw this, not big Edge fans, we came out of this with a whole new respect for him.
@NashaWriter85 My problem with Edge isn't his lack of skill (Hey, using an echo like that is -hard-). It's just that U2 has like 14 albums and he NEVER changes his sound for more than one song. Always that same twinkling echo.
@recycly You clearly have no read my comment entirely. Again, I think Edge is a great guitarist, he does -wonderful- stuff with the effects. I'm not saying he 'sucks' because of his technique. I'm saying I DONT LIKE HIM because of the fact he never changes that sound.
throughout the movie jimmy page is trying to freeze out the edge. notice how in this clip he positions himself in the centre with his back to the edge over and over.
pretty lame for someone so auspicious to be so insecure!
If they had all learned a guitar part from a U2 song instead, The Edge would have been like, "Okay, so turn all 20 of these effects pedals on.. Good, now just hit the open E string every minute or so."
@NappyHeadedHorse You are absolutely right! I do like the overall sound that The Edge gets, but the pedals are doing most of the work. Even here, The Edge has a slide on hand to help him out. Page just plays the damn song with his fingers doing all that's required.
I'd have loved to see Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page and David Gilmour sitting around talking about guitar. I know they're from the same era but they all had totally different styles and sounds.
the most famous riffs in the world are always the easiest and simp[le chords or notes to play

The edge is such a wanker, if he wasn't friends with Bono, no-one would have ever heard of him.

@alan989100 And if Jimmy had never met Robert Plant it might have played out that no one would know him.

My dad and I saw this, not big Edge fans, we came out of this with a whole new respect for him.

the edge is like that kid at the gathering that everyone is waiting to leave for the real fun to start
StunningInRed 3 weeks ago
@NashaWriter85 My problem with Edge isn't his lack of skill (Hey, using an echo like that is -hard-). It's just that U2 has like 14 albums and he NEVER changes his sound for more than one song. Always that same twinkling echo.
Diabloamarant 2 weeks ago
@Diabloamarant my problem with you and people like you, is that you think that u have to play complex stuff to be good at something
recycly 2 weeks ago
@recycly it's not about playing guitar and show every1 what u can do on it, its about making music
recycly 2 weeks ago
@recycly You clearly have no read my comment entirely. Again, I think Edge is a great guitarist, he does -wonderful- stuff with the effects. I'm not saying he 'sucks' because of his technique. I'm saying I DONT LIKE HIM because of the fact he never changes that sound.
Diabloamarant 1 week ago
Piss off Edge and go play with your effects pedal.

throughout the movie jimmy page is trying to freeze out the edge. notice how in this clip he positions himself in the centre with his back to the edge over and over.
pretty lame for someone so auspicious to be so insecure!

@herpesdemon You are reading too much into it. He is only going to his foot pedals.

They should have had SLASH in this movie...
ms3pugz 1 month ago
If they had all learned a guitar part from a U2 song instead, The Edge would have been like, "Okay, so turn all 20 of these effects pedals on.. Good, now just hit the open E string every minute or so."
NappyHeadedHorse 1 month ago
@NappyHeadedHorse You are absolutely right! I do like the overall sound that The Edge gets, but the pedals are doing most of the work. Even here, The Edge has a slide on hand to help him out. Page just plays the damn song with his fingers doing all that's required.

I'd have loved to see Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page and David Gilmour sitting around talking about guitar. I know they're from the same era but they all had totally different styles and sounds.

The Edge is the best of the 3, but makes this scene a bit 'awkward' Would love a character like James Hetfield there to lift the mood.
