  • Also, I wouldn't call it an accent. It's speech patterns really. Many gay men subconsciously take on female speaking patterns. Before my voice changed, my gay voice was really exaggerated. I seriously had no idea I sounded like that.

  • I don't have a lisp but my voice is pretty high. I don't realize how "gay" I sound until I hear my self on camera. It's completely natural and I hate it. I hate people automatically knowing I'm gay just from hearing my voice. I try to sound more masculine but the more I try the worse I sound.

  • You do have a mild hint of homo in your voice but its certainly not as exaggerated as some who are instantly distinguishable as having a scent of lavender.

  • I'm guessing that the gay "accent" is more common among the more promiscuous homosexuals. Homosexuals are on average more promiscuous than heterosexuals.

  • I HATE gay voice and dyke voice

  • It is for the same reason they put rainbow bumber stickers on their cars.

  • its a cultural things. I think its really stupid and annoying, cuz they are stereotyping the way females speak. this trend is just as bad as wannabe gangsters wearing their pants low. a dumb sub culture trend

  • A few observations:

    1. Some straight men have the gay accent. It does lead many people to think these people are closeted incorrectly.

    2. Some bisexual men seem to have the ability to use a gay accent when they are hanging out with gay men. But use a straight accent when they are hanging out with straight men or trying to pick up women.

    3. The gay men who have the accent tend to use it no matter who are they speaking with. It's not being used to pick up guys or declare one's orientation.

  • Maybe some of them want to be women, some of them are drag queens

  • Not all gay people speak stereotypically feminine, some gay guys speak like straight guys and you don't even know that they are gay. don't know why some gays speak like women or like Valley Girls.

  • I have a number of gay friends and some of them have the gay accent. One blogged about it very honestly, saying that he hates the accent and has been trying to eliminate it from his speech since he hit puberty, because that's when it developed from the hint of it he had as a kid. I can truly say that it's not something (some) gay men are actively trying to adopt. My friend has spent years taking notice of how he pronounces his vowels, deepening his voice, taking note of his s's, etc.

  • I know 4 straight guys who I first thought were gay because they talk like that

  • u started thinkin of gay guys?

  • Comment removed

  • Simply put it alerts the other finooks that " He is here and is queer, looking for some braciole."

  • I think it's fake. Just like all the other fake social habits various people have. People who think they are "gangsta" have their own little show they put on. "Valley Girls/Snobs" put on their show. Emo kids have theirs, goth kids have theirs and so on. Also, why do many gay men act girly? If a man is interested in MEN wouldn't he want his man to be "manly"? Anyway, I respect your non gay accent. I think the best way to be is yourself.

  • i never used to have but i do now.

  • @jaggass gay!

  • I have actually heard kids speak on that accent.

  • (I ran out of room in my previous post) I just don't understand this... why speak like this --> Look up this youtube video --> Bryan Breze - Tila Tequila is NOT a SLUT!

  • @akuongninja I watched several of that persons videos. I am not exactly sure why he talks or behaves like that. It does seem there is a wide spectrum of gay people some are extremely feminine and flamboyant, and some are very masculine, and many are in between. He may not be able to choose his voice, but he certainly is able to choose the way he speaks; my guess is that he idolizes some people who speak that way, so he chooses to speak that way too.

  • I just think that it is a really annoying way of letting everyone know that you are gay. I don't have any problems with people being gay at all. I have lots of gay friends. But it just really annoys me(this accent that is). I just don't see the reason why someone would feel the need to let everyone know at all times that they are gay. And if you really feel the need, then where a bracelet or a shirt or something.. don't start talking hella annoying...

  • Is it that they exaggerate their 's'?

For example, they may say shoes(shew-z) as "shewss"(hard 's').

  • I actually do know a straight kid with the accent! But from what I heard, some people believe it comes from a low testosterone level.

  • The reality is that some of them fake it, and others just can't help it. I am Gay and I don't necessarily hate my voice but it would be nice if people didn't automatically figure me out. I''ve been told it doesn't sound like the typically "gay accent" and that it is deeper but still has inflection. Thank god I don't lisp. I've been told that vocal surgery could correct it. OR even that maybe some of them are still in the pubescent phase and the vocal cords haven't elongated. Complicated question

  • I'm gay and I have a natural deep voice...I think some people just want to show "sign" that they are gay. I like my voice the way it is and keep your voice as well, I think having a more femine voice than your real voice sounds really awkward and unecessary.

  • Of course is a question of education and imitation......

as say HUGUESBC many gay men try to make it obvious and decide imite that style, others by fear or too timid character prefer speak softer. It´s the same that happens with accents (England, USA, Ireland...)

Why they don´t speak same way? By genetic question?? NO! just because they learn to speak like that. Human voice depend of nature and later of character and personality

  • there are 2 theory that attempts to answer this question :

    1. Bottom gay men want to make it sublty obvious that they like to take it up the butt by using a faggy voice.

    2. Being gay is a genetic disorder, people who have a rather heavy case of this disorder develop that faggy voice because of voice tract muscle control issues.

  • i say this from my own personal experience.. i am gay... but i speak in a gay voice because im trying to transition my male voice into a female voice this come with lots of practice... whats a better way than to speak like it everyday.

  • I'm not sure how much is nature or nurture but some men do speak more feminine. Brains are hardwired with different levels of male/female traits. This goes beyond the pitch of the voice as I've heard the "gay accent" in low voices as well. To some extent it is also a way to express personality traits and attract someone with like interests. How can gay men meet each other without some distinguishing trait? Maybe feminine speech gets men's attention. Taken to the extreme it drives some away.

  • My friend that is a stereotype. There are straight men that talk and act feminine as well so to answer your question no it is not a way to identify other gays. You might be surprised to know that most gay men don't actually talk like that but the reason you wouldn't is because you are unintenionally stereotyping!!! There is no straight or gay acting some are more masculine some are more feminine they are just people! But on the plus idk what it is about you but you're kind of cute in a smart way

  • Honey badger don't care. Honey badger don't give a shit.

  • @jcb561 lmao

  • Its not a lisp but if a gay person has a lisp it is accentuated. Its the sibilant s. And you have it too :)

  • i do it when i'm drunk so all the girls will automatically know i'm gay and we can all have a good time =) lolz

  • @Gongack you are probablly ugly then

  • @dirtdemon6 so mean

  • Also, I hate to tell you this, but your voice would set off my gaydar even if your username didn't give it away. You do seem to have many "gay" characteristics to your voice, so when you say "I don't really think I talk like that," well...you kind of do. It almost sounds like you're purposely lowering your voice just to not sound "gay."

  • I agree that this post is interesting, and I have always wondered the exact same questions that you have brought up. However, I HAVE heard of children who spoke like that, in fact, I was one of them! People always knew I was gay from my voice--and I didn't even know what gay meant back then!

  • I dunno if you still check these comments or not, but I thought about this a lot, too. There's two things I think come into play: hormones and friends. Most gay men hang out with women, who talk like "ohmahgaaaad" and exaggeratory. Hormones: estrogen makes you talk higher pitched if high amounts during puberty, & it's a common theory that us gays and les' have unbalanced female/male hormones. It's the same with lesbians. A lot talk lower and more masculine. Just my opinion. Btw, you're supacute.

  • i searched "gay accent" as i want to know whats up with that voice every show with a gay guy has that weird voice

  • Go fuck ur dog you gay piece of trash

  • I am a gay guy and I have a deep voice, however I think that some people naturally speaks like that wheter they are gay or not.

  • @NickyNarcissus he's not closeted you fuck stick. Watch his other videos and that fact will make itself apparent. Inregards to the video you speak with a tad of a lisp from what i've noticed and it doesnt really make sense to me as to why so many gays do this. I speak naturally and it makes me semi preturbed to hear that stereotypical gay voice

  • @XTheOverseer Wow..You are really Close-Minded for a "Gay" guy. & You're obviously not comfortable with being gay when you have to constantly reassure yourself that you're "Straight" "Straight" "Straight". Bitch please, Join this guy in his closet.. and fucking croke together. Maybe there you can suck each other off... Where no one can see! Gay guys with balls like me... Don't need insecure fucking gays that don't take pride and confidence in yourselves. You disgust me more then STRAIGHT people.

  • @NickyNarcissus was this necessary? i'm sorry that i dont fit your pre concieved mold on what a gay man should be. i didnt realize it was necessary to look, sound, and act like a women simply because i'm gay. you have openned my eyes to the prejudices and double standards present within an already outcasted demographic

  • @XTheOverseer Actually.. Who is the one judging here? Who is the one saying that we "Put on a voice" The "Stereotypical Gay Voice" like do you hear yourself? Your not going to win this argument you fucking ignorant close-minded fuck. I simply stated how it's wrong to judge GAY MEN on their voice when most of them and most MEN could have that voice naturally. I'm just saying how you must be insecure if your questioning a "STEREOTYPICAL" voice. Do you hear yourself? REALLY?

  • @XTheOverseer Don't get Clever with me sweet pea. & even if those gay guys don talk like that.. Who are you to judge? & why would you call it "Stereotypical" .. When the Black people were being brutally discriminated they stuck together. They didn't grow instant balls and start judging each other when they're the same people. How dare you judge another gay man.. That's just disgusting you all should be a shame. WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMING TOO :|

  • @NickyNarcissus you sound like an idiot

You disgust me more then STRAIGHT people

    are you hetrophobic?

  • @NickyNarcissus Straight people disgust you?

  • "StraightActingGayGuy" are you serious? LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Actually I've heard plenty of men who are married with kids and have a very feminine high pitched voice. I myself and among many other fucking gays have a natural voice like that. The reason is cause were okay with being gay unlike you. So keep acting straight and leave me a comment. And have fun hon. I hope your comfy in your closet ;)

  • what do you mean "why" the gay voice, my voice simply sounds like a cat being tortured, there is no reason behind me speaking this way whatsoever. I wish it were different but that's just how it is.And I find it sad, when gay guys, especially "straight-acting" dudes, turn their back on you, simply because they think you're too much of a pussy. But you know what, I don't give a shit, I could kick their asses if I wanted to. My voice does not define me.

  • @AarontheArtist57 AGREED! PRIDE! BITCH! KEEP YO HEAD UP! XD

  • @gaylolful YOU BET YO ASS I WILL! xD

  • @AarontheArtist57 YEAH BITCH! LOL

  • @gaylolful O.o

  • @wkunzelman1 LOL what happened?

  • its called a monotone voice

  • I love these supposedly ''straight acting'' gay guys who are so obviously gay. Listen to the way he says ''curious'' and the obvious forced lowering of the voice fools no one. That and the constant flapping of his wings as he speaks and I think a blind and deaf guy could read this ''straight acting'' guy. If you wanna be ''straight acting'' sweetie, go lick a pussy. Otherwise get over yourself.

  • it's not a gay accent I believe it's a lisp probably

  • omg i know why its like a way to make them sound sexy and feminine♥ i know this stuff im gay lol♥

  • maybe it can be classified as an 'eccentric' accent? like other comments, other 'straight' people I know have this accent. maybe it's more feminine? dunnnnno. but i guess it is an accent out of the usual 'bob in the office' accent that history has supplied us.

  • A gay accent ? o_O

  • SxePhil has a kind of Gay lisp, which he exaggerates a lot, but as far as I know he's straight. I have met other straight men who speak this way too. They get all the girls that way ;)

  • WHOA WHOA WHOA....you take german? That's my major! Badass!

  • I have always wondered it too, your guess of saying it might be to identify them selves is a great guess i think but i think it may be the way people make them feel really feminine so they act really feminine. There seems to be generally a feminine gay and a masculine gay type though and the masculine gay don't seem to favor talking with a 'gay lisp

  • I believe its biological.

  • You're gay

  • Effeminancy is put on by men.

  • Ironically, the gay voice was emphatically easy to detect in this video.

  • Thats like asking why do you breathe? Its just dumb and ignorent of you to say.

  • their just queens.

  • @Nathanlth Did you read his username?

  • your videos were talking about "GAY", all of them. SO, are you GAY? you concern it, mean you don't wanna be gay, but actually you totally gay.

  • No offense, but your voice has that "gay accent."

  • My friend actually has people point out that he has that 'gay accent'. And he's definitely straight.

Granted, I never noticed it. He had to point it out to me. I'm unobservant when it comes to stuff like that.

  • @epeolatrytime

Generally, if a straight guy has characteristics of the stereotypical, flamboyant gay guy, they're called metrosexual.

Sometimes, all that's required is just this "gay accent" to be considered metrosexual.

The best thing ever though, is if you can go from from a typical "straight accent" to the stereotypical "gay accent" at will. You'll confuse a ton of people.

  • gay people ruin society -.- keep it private lol

  • @dacegirl944 Then keep your heterosexuality private at all times please

  • @dacegirl944 gay people ruin society? where is your proof? give me substantial evidence that gay male or females ruin society. look up ruin; it means to destroy or demolish completly. so since my community is not destroyed by some miracle im pretty sure that your wrong.... BTW my cousin says that it is a natural thing that developes over time.i know 2 or 3 people with "the gay lisp" that are not gay

  • @dacegirl944 you're a douche

  • I don't have a fucking clue, probally one of the only reasons I haven't attempted to meet another guy cause they all sound like girls.

  • I address this a little in my video and description for my video "Answer: Why Do Gays Sometimes Lisp?". Please also watch the educational cartoon which you get to by following the first link.

  • adios porque yo TENGO 4 anos de highschool ;)

  • 1) I don't HATE ANYONE based on their sexual orientation alone

    2) I don't hate "feminine" gay men for being feminine and gay

    3) I DO find flamboyancy, overly zealous gregariousness, and superficiality to be extremely annoying, whether it's from a gay man, straight man, or a woman.

Again, while I do not hate the feminine gay man, it annoys me when I observe such behavioral traits, just as it annoys me when I observe them from ANY human being.

    - Straight man

  • @CrprtMpstr I could say the same thing about your videos, but I don't have any need to. It was rather interesting to see the video of you talking to the camera, because I was curious to see what you are like. It's fine if you don't find my videos interesting. I've always had no problem with criticism or even hateful comments I leave up, because I think people should be free to express themselves. For some reason your comment stands out to me as unnecessary though. I'm a but surpised you left it.

  • Its a choice. I wondered this question a while ago. If anyone, strait or gay, constantly did that accent, it would become natural. Some people just have a feminine tone.

  • Dude, I hear ya, I am gay and I do not speak that way neither.

  • @MuscleBuildProdject me too but im not gay

  • they just talk girly~i know some straight people who talk like that~ or maybe they're not~ ;o

  • I don't understand the origin of the gaccent either. I sometimes think that it's accentuated due to some need for acceptance in a homosocial setting or as some kind of attracting mechanism. Peacocks have large extravagant plumage that they brandish when attempting to attract a mate. Cat's make the "horny face" when smelling other cats or shoes for some reason. And if you've ever seen a horny pygmy goat then you have seen the most putrid display of "look at me". Everyone tries somehow.

  • I like your Canadian accent. I have a much easier time identifying gay men (gaydar, gayspeak, whatever) than identifying lesbians. This is a big problem for me since I am a lesbian.

  • Actually, I like your Canadian accent.

  • To be honest, I do not know if I sound gay or not. If I sound gay, then people would already assume that I am gay but everyone I know thinks I'm straight (to my knowledge at least). But then when I talk on the phone to customer service, I am mistaken as a woman sometimes (and I don't like that fact). So that confuses me. But I don't think I have the "gay accent" because people think I'm straight.?

  • I've wondered about the same thing. I've never heard it described as a gay accent...that's a good way to describe it.

  • It's a subconcious process from youth. As kids many gay men didn't directly identify with other boys and saw girls and female figures as somehow more similar to who they were and thus in play and assoc, unconsciously adopted their speech. That speech pattern is very recognizable and now has become a point of reference for the larger gay community simply b/c it sticks out and many will adapt it to fit in with that scene; same as moving to Britain and unconsciously adopting British intonation.

  • When are you making a vid in Spanish?

Tengo 4 años de Español ("Tiene" is not correct)

The other question I'm as clueless same as you, I don't sound gay at all.

  • isnt it something to do with having ur ass raped?

i heard that when u get stabbed in the ass, u have a clitoris like thing up ur shitter, this causes sum kind of sexual release similar to womens orgasms.

this in turn changes the hormone level and lowers the voice.

i guess homos who havent had their backdoor kicked in(virgin homos) still sound a bit more manish.

  • actually my cousin is 7 and alrdy speaks that way...

  • its sexy...i like it :)

  • I posted a comment but I think I removed it by accident so if this post shows up twice, my bad. I really beleive it has to do with biological makeup. I'm gay and have a soft voice. I also think its the way we speak and enunciate. I grew up in rural Arkansas and yes we do have a southern drawl. You would not believe how many people in Arkansas will ask me where I am from. They are suprised when I tell them Im native. They all say but you dont talk like us. I dont know it's weird

  • If you look at the brains of males and females, they are different. In some cases, there is more of a feminizing of the brain in some homosexuals. This may cause they "gay voice" in which you are talking about.

    jaysays.com/2009/06/lgbt-for-straight-people-your-brain-on-sex-by-bear54-gay-lgbt/

  • @jeayers86 I agree, im gay and i think im fairly masculine but i have a soft voice...not the stereotypical high pitched lisp but just a soft voice. I do believe it has to do with biological makeup. I hate when homophobes say gays speak the way they do because they are tyring to be more feminine. Which is not the case. people can't choose what their voice sounds like.

  • It sounds like saffibaffi is a closet-homo that hates his own sexuality. Hey saffibaffi. U needta realize that hating on gays is not ganna make u straight. Your gay and u kno it saffibaffi so just be koo wid it.

  • good question

  • It's interesting. Did you guys know "gay lisp" has been studied academically by professors Henry Rogers and Ron Smyth at the University of Toronto? Check out wiki for it.

To my opinion, many times it's more subconsciously done not deliberately so the question that "why do you want to sound gay" does not make sense but the question "why do you sound gay?" can be a cool question to answer...

  • I have a lisp I WAS BORN WITH IT but im striahgt, but I feel like stabbing someone in the throat everytime they think im gay because of my voice, like im not against gay ppl but im against ppl who warp my sexuality based on my speech impediment

  • @ryeguyisme LMFAO

  • I totally agree with you.

  • @saffibaffi you are strangely obsessed with gay sex for some reason... weird

i mean really.. the fact that you spend so much time thinking about "cock munchers" or "jobby jabbers" just makes YOU seem weird.

    just sayin...

  • Just get some balls and directly ask someone who is gay. But they probably won't have a good answer because they probably don't even know themselves. But yes, women DO do it was well. I have seen many - a - butch lesbian actually butch up the voice... or add raspiness to it.

  • @saffibaffi too evil is more like it

karma's a bitch - remember that next time you are full of pain

  • @saffibaffi hey saffibaffi - your description of yourself as a nasty mother fucker is close, but not quite enough to describe what a waste of space you are

    go get the virus?

if you have ever lost anyone close to you from aids you would never make such a flippant comment and if you ever said that in front of me i would smack you down hard

    ps lesbians think you suck

  • if you listen to girls and women speak, they sound gay - i think some gay males who speak the way you are talking about are the ones that have mostly socialised with girls.

  • I hate to mentions the obvious, but why do YOU speak with a lisp. Just because you have a deep voice doesn't mean you're passing for straight.

  • Comment removed

  • Like Kurt from Glee, his voice sounds feminine.

  • It's not a lisp. Rudy Giuliani has a lisp. I am a language researcher, and I don't know why the "gay voice" exists. I'm pretty sure I have it though not very strong, but it's not conscious. Funny/tragic story: when my cousin (female) got married my whole family was like "is he really gay?" when we met her new husband. Sure enough 18 years later, it all came out in the open. He really did not WANT to be gay but there it is.

  • I know a guy who claims hes straight that speaks like that. Im wondering why he speaks that way. Me and my friend think hes in the closet.

  • Basically what I'm saying is that it's a cultural thing that most gay guys talk in a feminine manner. Most of them are suckered in to the media frenzy of things such as fashion or beauty, while the ones who talk normally are not suckered in to this stuff.

  • I don't know for sure, but maybe most gay guys feel the urge to act more feminine since they are sexually attracted to men, and being feminine in a way, to them, has advantages in areas such as fashion or modeling. Think about it, all of the best fashion designers in history were either gay or metrosexual. I think it's the feminine characteristic that makes them more creative.

  • mimicry in humans

  • mimicry in humans

  • Some people put it on, but honestly, I know gay guys who that is their natural voice and it developed during puberty, and it can actually be quite distressing to them because the second they open their mouth everyone knows they're gay and they might immediately get treated different. Not saying that everyone with a 'gay' voice is gay, obviously, or that everyone who is gay has a 'gay' voice. But in many cases the pitch of the voice is completely biological and they can't do anything about it.

  • Maybe it's HORMONAL? : /

Any gays know the answer to this one?????

  • easy recognition no guesswork - affinty for women a mocking/aping/copying of women's intonations- and I knew guys who talked like this at 8 yrs old so it goes beyond what you are describing- also one of the many major biological conditions associated with homosexuality is that testosterone and estrogen levels in the womb determine sex male or female and levels that are abnormally low in testosterone but above the range that causes intersex or hermaphrodite or trans are the gay range

  • its pretty simple really, they get the voice from large dicks travelling up through the body and striking the voice box then coating it in jizz

  • @EqualAndFree I have witnessed to you, so you have no excuses in the end...I'm not here to debate with you because we both know that gets you nowhere. Now i'm sure you will write another negative comment, but I wont reply because my job is done. Good Luck! God Bless!

  • @EqualAndFree You seem like a VERY bitter person, and deep down well maybe not so deep you are afraid of what will happen to you when you drop dead. ALL you have to do is, call unto the LORD and ask him to forgive you of your sins save your soul. It's that easy....not a difficult choice at all it is very straight forward actually. I don't expect you to believe or agree with me, but as a child of God I have done what is asked of ALL children of God, I just witnessed to you.

  • Comment removed

  • @EqualAndFree We shall see in the end now wont we?! I'll pray for you, it's all I can do. Good luck with that mindset though!

  • I'm not sure why that is...maybe it's just their natural voice and some find it easier to talk that way for some reason. I've seen both in the spectrum and it's something I've always wondered about some have sounded so feminine that I thought to myself: Put some bass in your voice, you're a guy...but to be honest until I was 19 people thought I was a girl on the phone

  • Have you heard of a certain funk/pop singer by the name of Prince? Dude is straight as an arrow, usually has a bunch of women all over him in his music videos and most of his songs have dirty lyrics pertaining to women's body parts.

But if you've ever heard him talk, due to how we think men 'should' sound, he sounds more feminine than most gay men I've ever met put together. But do people call him out on it? Not often, unless someone compares him to Wesley Snipes, lol. Just a thing I noticed.

  • i'm sort of in the middle with the voice thing. i just speak naturally and i do notice it sometimes. i kind of think it might have to do with hanging around girls a lot while growing up. some people probably do put on the accent though. there's really macho butch men but when they speak you can tell they are gay. i have see straight guys with gay sounding voices and its really confusing. maybe it can't be helped sometimes.

  • Interesting question.Anway you said sth in your video that I disagree.Ive seen kids use this accent. Also Im from a non english-speaking country and the a portuguese-gay accent is similiar to an english-gay accent.Atleast in the way that you mold the languages phonology.

    This doesn't happen with lesbians...

Also maybe this may be related to a certain characteristics that make a person tend to be gay, and those characteristics also cause this. Or just monkey-see monkey-do.

  • @raydredX

Damn. I can never make short comments.

Anyway I've also seen straight people use this accent. Mainly rich people who look like they think they're very important if you get what I mean.

Anyway, cool that even though your gay you don't speak that way. Because that accent freaking annoys me and makes me want to punch people.

  • First there are kids that speak that way lol and I think it just makes them feel more free? I mean they like what girls like; guys feminin clothes, makeup, crazy hairdos, doing other girls nails why not the voice? I mean it just comes naturally? and gays that don't speak that way are just ashamed and try to sorta hide it?

  • its cuz alot of gay guys hangout with alot guurls (and usually no guy friends or few, and usually if they hangout with guys there femmez like them) and they get influenced by them

    makes sense i think

  • There is evidence that influence of estrogen in the woman's womb can either cause a child to be born gay. It might not have anything to do with that, but it might be the case. I have a softer voice, but I don't do it on purpose.

  • I don't have a deep voice nor do I have the gay lisp or whatever. If I do the gay lisp, its because I'm mocking or joking around with my friends. I have been confronted by a straight guy who I know isn't that straight but - He asked me, why I talk like I do. And I told him, "well I can't help it that I talk this way." He would get upset with me because my voice wasn't "manly". I certainly don't go gay pride on their asses but I'm quiet until I know whats going on with my surroundings.

  • Are you people serious!? Its totally natural. Its very hypocritical for gay people to say its on purpose or its all for show and on purpose. I have the gay voice and I hate it to shreds. i would never choose to talk in this way same as i wouldn't chose to be gay. I grew up constantly with woman and couldn't avoid them so my voice probably picked up some of that. I know for a fact it isn't on purpose. And i find it offensive when gay people frown on it. I don't desire it either but really??

  • @Drstrange3000 I think its more complicated than that. When I came out, I spent some time "finding myself" and part of that was immersing myself into mainstream gay culture. When I did that I picked up the "gay accent". After I while I left that and the accent behind. However, I do know that there are many guys who naturally talk like that. So I think its actually a bit close minded to think that both reasons aren't entirely possible and legit.

  • @AnotherEffingJoe yeah i agree with you. i never said that the other side isn't. I know other people can help it. i was just getting a vibe that people didn't think it was natural so I stated that side. It is very possible for both. I just happened to talk that way and is normal for me. I can't turn it off. I try to though but I shouldn't have to. but I hate trying to fit into anything mainstream. I like being me. but yeah it can be done intentionally or naturally. ^^ just my 2 cents

  • OMG............It's a choice, cmon people you cant REALLY believe they are born that way??? God didn't make people gay...they chose to be that way all on there own! Open a Bible and read it! Oh wait....what was I thinking? You wont open a Bible simply because the Bible speaks against immoral behavior such as homosexuality! Just stating the ONLY truth that is God's word.

  • I guess I have a "gay accent." Let me tell you, it's not some sort of choice. In fact, I really hate the stereotypical gay voice (Which is just great since I have one). It's not some method I use to seek out other gays; that's just weird.

    Here's my theory:

The male fetus, when introduced to the gay gene, "feminises." This "feminization" process may result, in some gays, a naturally higher (Must I say it again?) more feminine voice.

And yes, homosexuality is scientifically proven to be genetic.

  • First of all, I want to begin by saying that I am a gay man & some people think I speak in a gay way. I have given this some considerable thought and the best answer I might provide is the following: Perhaps we don't have an "accent" but rather a more feminized way of articulating ourselves. I believe my homosexuality is genetic & ONLY with considerable effort am I able to speak in a more "masculine" way. Does this help?

  • Don't let the queens that are jealous of your beautiful deep sexy masculine voice tell you that you sound gay. You sound like a normal everyday intelligent guy. If you answered a telephone, I wouldn't be able to tell you're gay just from listening to you. Anyhoo.... I think some guys are naturally fem, and sometimes it's just a role people play for whatever reasons. Your observations are valid indeed.

  • WHO CARES!!! Does it matter why people speak a certain way that is different than others? NO.

  • Hope that didn't offend anybody, just trying to convey my thoughts....

Also, I actually hear somewhat of a gay voice undertone when you talk sometimes, Erik...your deep voice just sort of masks it. I don't even think it has to be as strong as you think.

  • I know that some people were offended by this, but I have to agree that it is a legitimate question. I have to say that I sometimes have a voice, but it's never really too strong...it sort of depends on who I'm talking to? Idk I don't even notice it...I don't have any sort of lisp, though (most guys I know don't), it's just sort of...girlier? I have no idea.

My theory is that I grew up with more friends who were girls so that's why I sometimes talk like that when I'm excited (?).

  • Also forgot to mention- linguists were also able to correctly identify, using old home videos of participants- without knowing the later sexual orientation of the person- whether or not the kid on the tape would be gay or straight in later life. So- I think there's a genetic link, especially seeing as it seems to transcend the language barrier. Plus- I hate to break it to you, Erik, but- not saying you sound "stereotypical"- but you don't sound straight either- not that that's bad, of course :)

  • Obviously each person has their own unique style of speaking- called an ideolect- this varies between each person regardless of their sexual orientation. However, research done at the University of Chicago a couple years ago- and featured on 60 Minutes- suggests that there general differences in pronunciation and inflection between gay and straight males. Interestingly enough- these same differences were found between participants whether they spoke English or another language!

  • hahahaha.. I do think there is a distinct "voice" but I also think some gay people dont have that voice.. such as yourself.. yea it depends on the person but i dont think people put it on i honestly think its subconscious and something that changes later on when you grow up.. i dont know thats just my opinion. dont know if its the same case for lesbians though...

  • Sometimes it is caused by a lisp and I have a gay voice because I was born wit one like everyone walks different everybody talks different

  • That's a great question! I have often wondered the same thing myself, but always chalk it up to someone wanting to be different and identifiable. (or annoying, depending on how you look at it) My big question is what causes some gay men to have such a prissy attitude? I'm not slamming gay people (I'm gay too) I'm just trying to figure certain things out. -Steve-

  • @OceanTownPictures

I don't mind femmininity in guys, but why the ditsy sweet valley high bimbo? I'm gay too.

  • By playing it straight and the whole "I don't like fem guys" or "I like my men to act like men" gay men try to assimilate to the hetero masculine standard that grants them privilege at the expense of those who don't conform to this paradigm. Unfortunately, by doing so, they extend the power of the roles, sexism, and phobias that have denied LGBT people and others their liberation.

  • I would like to point out assimilationist nature of gay male culture. Why is it a good to be masculine? Why was being str8 acting so important u included it in ur display name? Why is that desirable? It all goes back to the patriarchal nature of our society which places people into unequal gender roles. In such a place the most offensive thing is for a man (privileged by his gender) to act feminine thereby accepting status as a "weaker" gender.
