my initial reaction was that this is a pretentious film, made in the way it is made just so that it would feel more indie. but after a second watch, i think if james lee continues to make such films, he just might become malaysia's antonioni.
Also, the best part about this film is its unpredictability. You can't tell for sure what is going to happen (eg: woman appearing suddenly but the main protagonist's reaction is surprisingly chill, almost indifferent in a way)
unlike films we're used to, where cause and effect makes for more predictable cinema, here, we get a probabilistic cinema instead. anything can happen by chance and we the audience are often suspended in a state of uncertainty.
i was reading a book on Deleuze's time-image and for some reason this film came to mind as I was reading!
Instead of a sensory motor schema (causality) cinema, I believe director james lee was going for a cinema whereby the narrative is pushed back, and Time is instead placed at the fore front - so that what you see, instead of characters reacting (or audiences reacting to what is being shown), is a direct representation of time. In other words, the movie moves as segments of real time.
