  • Arif Sahab, Salaam ! Shukriya for this heavenly upload. I am at loss of words to THANK YOU appropriately and adequately. But for a better word...THANKS A ZILLION. Adab and Regards - krvsongy

  • Awadh ke Aakhri Tajdar Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Bahadur ka Kalaam hain yeh

  • Love to listen Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. This "thumri" was written by Wajid Ali Shah who was the last Nawab of Lucknow. He became Avadh's Nawab when he was 23 years old. Lord Del Housie has declared Lucknow a Khalsa state and imprisoned Nawab Wajid Ali Shah for 31 years in Culcutta. He had a deep love for Lucknow and before leaving Lucknow he wrote this "Thumri" in raag Bhairvi....as far as I know....Thanks for such a Historic collection Khan Sahab.

  • thank you very much for this beautiful item...wah wah wah...

  • i dont now much about him but i have heard his songs and now the indian legend of indian classical music is no more the bharat ratna pt. bhimsen joshi rest in peace may god be with him sad demise of the classical musician

  • While it may not matter I'd like to point out that I'm Muslim, Pakistani living in Canada for almost 2 years now. I feel badly about the great Pundit Bhimsen Joshi and I pray that he rests in peace, he's definitely in a better place now because his work is absolutely brilliant,he has lived his life doing exceptionally good at what he does and he has dedicated his life to the great classical music from India. Mad respect goes out to u I am listening to my favourites by him in his memory.

  • @nomania Ones nationality or religion do not come in way of appreciating art. It really does not matter. I am an India Hindu and very fond of Pakistani music and artistes. However, I do not know much about classical musicians of this generation from Pakistan. Could you please suggest some names?

  • Irreplaceable in every aspect! A true son of this wonderful land. A talent that scaled the heights of sky , a humility that caressed the earth. The river has finally merged into the ocean of music

  • Rest in Peace Pandit ji .. :,(

  • @jaydesh9 The heart is heavy this morning. Our loss is great. Mahaan aur lajawab gaayek thae.

  • @arifkhan100 Thank you Arif-bhai - The heart is indeed very heavy!

  • @jaydesh9 RIP Panditji we'll miss you !

  • Listening to Panditji singing this immortal Bhairvi for me is as if Panditji was describing his own passing away. It brought ears to my eyes. Thank you Arif Khan sahib and all of you who have apperciated this great artist. Because of people like you our grand masters and this beautiful music will always live.

  • will always remain a Legend

  • this i think is based on some folk song for which many artists have made their interpretations, K L Saigal is great no doubt but Bhimsen Joshis version has added a classical touch to it

  • Pt Bhimsenji is our national jewel.....simply emotionaly exceptional.

  • Bheemsen ji, you are the Einstein of Music! Mankind owes you a royalty just because you existed.

  • Such an emotional piece from Panditji! I was almost crying within the first few seconds ...

  • dair ala superb,simply amazing.peace

  • Enjoy both the versions, dont compare. Both are legends in thier own way

  • Beautifully sung, absolutely mesmerizing, each vocal part is filled with the superlative artistry and with concise top-to-bottom command of vocal range, he is simply unmatched. As good as Saigal Sahab was, there is no comparison between the two. Great pictures of his performances. Khan Sahab thanks for this upload, I loved it. Best regards, Suhanee!!

  • Thanks Zaidi sb for forwarding this great thumari... Divine.

  • I am perplexed by the disparaging comments, almost fanatical, on the singing ability of Pt. Joshi vis-a-vis KLS. Must one put down one to enjoy another? They are both glorious i in their individual styles, Joshi ji in his full-fledged, rich classical style and KLS in his short and light classical version. The first has a magnetic virtuosity, the second great tonal quality and moving effect. Thanks, arifkhan100.

  • @chamogaa I think that is the best way one can put it. Thanks Prof. Vipan Chandra.

  • superb rendition by pandit ji. see when first time he says naihar choot hi jaaye. it brings tears in eyes. superb. saigal stands nowhere infront of mountain bhimsen

  • May you live for ever. God blees you. Simply superb.

  • Arif, Beautifully sung by Pt Joshi... Do u know in which raag is it ?

  • @ramils

    Raga is called Bhairavi..

  • thanx arif for uploading.............

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Ji has God's voice, devine voice, unique voice, he sing each type of variety duration singing so easier. Its extreme tough to sing by otherone.

  • Arif Khan sahib,

I would salute you for uploading this great rendition. May God always bless you.

    we love you joshi ji.

salams from yr pakistani muslim brothers.

    rahim chundrigar

  • In order to understand his talent/range, one has to listen Bhimsen Joshi's "Ketaki Gulab Juhi" with Manna Dey from film Basant Bahar 1956. Thank you.

  • Great voice. Unparallel. This makes me cry but still I keep coming to it.

  • WOW!!!!! THIS IS BEYOND COMPARE!!!!!!!!

  • joshi jee great i am pukhtoon(phatan) but love all these kind of song beacuse rajkapoor grandfather was a police officer in my village and his son partiviraj was a young guy who used to do stage darams in my village( 10 klm from peshawar) so we all have still all those stuff mr joshi after k l saigal you did the best we love y

  • @KHAN1561 khanjee wonderful story :-)

    da Khudai paman

  • Yes Sir, Music has no boundries and m lovers should be open, I appreciate

  • @KHAN1561 Unbelievable. I am so thankful to you, Mr. Khan. I am totally lost for words how to describe my state of mind. Can not believe someone can have that kind of control on voice, command on sur and overall excellence in music. I do not know who has done image pasting work, most probably Mr. Arif Khan, @arifkhan100 the uploader, who has added fuel to the fire. Absolutely outclass. I must extend my deepest thanks to him.

  • @sqhzaidi Thanks Sir for sharing this masterpiece....listening to these type of shastriya sangeet or classical music i grew up ..Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saheb and Pundit B.S.Joshi ji.....then bollywood gradually took over.....getting taste of those good old days is a pleasent treat these days.

    Thanks to ArifKhan.

  • @KHAN1561 Woo where is your village?

  • I think that Saigal and Bhimsen are from different backgrounds - they are both excellent voal artists. However, Panditji is a classical singer and it not be appropriate to compare him with Saigalji. With all my respect to Saigalji, I still think that Panditji is a class apart in termas of class of music. Defitely, I don't demean Saigalji, he is great, but Bhimsenji is a different class altogether...

  • It would be unfair to compare K.L.Saigal's version of this famous composition by kabir. Ofcourse K.L.saigal had a great voice and he sang the shorter version of this song for a film very well one should not fail to appreciate the great maestro Pandit Bhimsenji's dwelling in the nuances of the raga and treating us to a great feast.let us not forget that Saigal was a playback singer who learnt the 3 minute adaptation of the song for the film Street Singer which enthalls us in a different way!

  • jitni tareeeef ki jaye kam hai.

  • Really nice..... o:-)

  • musiman0124 i am not agree with you.coz the style of singing of both the sigers was totally different @ i think you have no idea about the efforts taken by PANDITJI to leran the singing from his childhood.so "Hamare jaise logonki aukat nahi hai ke hum unke gane ko naap sake"

  • Beautiful. I was looking for this for my soft copy collection. Thanks for this and also the words.

You are right that is the story often talked about. Undoubtedly Wajid Ali Shah was a great patron of music. But we do not hear any further compositions by him. Therefore since some propose that this was originally by Kabir changed later makes some room to believe.

  • I have just read your comments about joshi sahib mr musimano .and ifeel so sorry about your music knoledge . Joshi sahib has done woinderfull job . I am great fan of sehgal sahib . but you have writtenabout joshi sahib so sorry for you

  • misiman0124 has no knowledge of finer aspect of singing and Pt. Bhimsen rendering is magnum opus and the best The kirana garana expert has no match in this world. which misiman0124 should understand. He has taken us to very divine hights

  • supreme bliss when you listen you just listen there should be no comment.

  • Pundit Bhimsen...is a LEGEND.No doubt is valid.

  • I have high respect to Bhimsen Joshi and he is great indian hindustani music's classical singer, but when it comes to Babul Mora..many attempted including Jagjit Singh, Lata, Bhimsen Joshi etc., no one could draw a parallel with K L Saigal, not even Bhimsen Joshi in this Thumri cum Khayal style.KL Saigal's voice and rendering in most melodious flexible voice was divine; his voice would sit permanently in mind and make one enjoy his tonal quality rendering giving equal emphasis on the lyrics too.

  • I have read that Ustad Faiyaz Khan saw the movie Devdas starring Saigal and after hearing the sorrowful song in Rag Des-Dukh ke ab din bitat nahin, he burst into tears and left the hall weeping and straight way headed to meet Saigal and praised his Divine voice. Saigal learnt classical singing from Faiyaz Khan. Similarly Ustad Abdul Karim after listening to Saigal's song-Piya bin nahin awat chain (originally sung by him), went to congratulate Saigal and gave him a Rs.100 note.

  • With due respect to BS Jhoshi, by saying 1%, I have tried to highlight the level of KL

Saigal's divine voice and divine voice culture. Two topmost classical singers of their times-Ustad Faiyaz Khan and Ustad Abdul Karim Khan personally went to meet Saigal and praised him.

  • @arifkhan100 All top classical singers of 50s, 60s and earlier times were far superior than Shri Joshi like Pt. DV Paluskar, Amir Khan, Faiyaz Khan, Bade Gulam Ali Khan, his Guru's Guru-Abdul Karim Khan, his Guru Savai Gandharva, Hira bai Barodekar, Pt. onkarnath Thakur, Pt. Narayan Rao Vyas, Pt. Vinayaka Rao Patwardhan, Pt. Krishna Rao Shanker Pandit etc.

  • According to me KL Saigal's divine voice and voice culture reigns supreme even today and Pt. Bhimsen Joshi's voice and voice culture is not even 1% of KL Saigal's notwithstanding former's Sapaat Taans in pure classical Khayal-style. KLS's voice has the power of bringing the discerning listener into tears which Bhim sen Joshi can not match at all.

  • @musiman0124 you are entitled to your opinion. while saigal's voice was great, you must remember that Pt. Joshi is one of the most recognized classical singers that india has produced. all the singers alive today show him the utmost of respect. they all know more about music and voice training than most us ordinary folks who just enjoy listening to music. to say that he is 1% of saigal is not really demonstrating the respect that is due to him. peace......

  • @arifkhan100 By saying 1%, I have raised the level of KL Saigal to divine level, where as BS Jhoshi's voice is of this earth only i.e. his voice's tonal quality. Even Lata treats Saigal as her Guru and says that his voice is with her ever since her childhood till date. She listens to Saigal almost on daily basis. She is a Saigal Bhakta, along with Mukesh, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Talat Mehmood, etc. Saigal was a singer of singers.

  • @musiman0124 you are probably don't understand the difference between classical and film music. I am fan of both, they are great singers.

But it happens when you first listen the hindi film song and the the original raaga.

  • @arifkhan100 : very well written response... you have blessed our lives by uploading such gems!! may god bless you !

  • @musiman0124 Panditji has thrilled audience concluding maifils with this traditional bhairavi since early years of career to which this recording belongs.

There are differences in the two styles of rendition. Classical involves presentation of mood or raga in various tones and taans over a much longer period. In a film-type duration of a song presentation has a lot to do with texture of the voice, which broadens in classical. Both should aim at bhaaw. Both need a range developed through riyaz.

  • @musiman0124 - it is a pointless exercise comparing singers at they all have their own styles in singing the same songs. in fact this makes for wonderful listening. I have listened to Ustad Barkat Ali Khan and his brother Ustad Bade Ali Khan singing the same classical songs with each singing to their strengths and sometimes I end up preferring one version over the other.

To the listener this offers a fantastic choice and therefore end up listening all day and forget to do any work

  • @musiman0124 you cannot compare these two stalwarts, both are special in their own way. KL Saigalji could convey pathos and pain beautifully, Pt.Joshi brings his own expertise and talent to this song that is uniquely his own.

  • @musiman0124

well.yes everyones on its on.but to compare saigal to bhimsenji is jsut do not justify.

a divine talent and a good singer of cinema songs

  • @musiman0124 Did some one ask you? Why cannot you appreciate something beautiful without comparing?

  • The best 'Babul Mora' I have ever heard. I think this is recorded from a private mehfil which took place at Shantanurao Kirloskar's house.

  • just amazing

  • Anybody know who is the shishya singing with panditji?

  • THIS IS HEAVEN !!

  • wah wah kya bat hai ,pandit ji is just emazing ,I am an Afghan, but my favorit classical singer is pandit bihsen joshi ,then jusrage and Ustad rashed khan saab

  • @joyaan merci. you are right. joshi, jasraj and khan are all at the very top classical singing today.

  • Amazing!!!

The picture at 00:40 is very though ahahah

  • anand!!!!!!!

  • 85 years old Bharat Ratna is ought to perform "babul mora. in Bhairvi?" Guys .....just hold your breath & listen.. this is history in its making, like Birju Bawra or Tansen... event like this may not take place for some centuries...for mother india. It is sinful act to compare Bhimsen Josi with (whom did you say) the other singer was...?

  • If singing is about " dard & bhav emulated by a singer " then good singing would vary from person to person and from audience to audience. But if it is about range and control over range then Saigal is no match to Bhimsen Josi. K. L Saigal had very small range and can sing only simple melody. Bhimsen Josi is a " Sagit Sagar " when it comes to range & control over range. Most professional singers ( around the world) would bow to Bhimsen Josi for this accomplishement. For them Who is Saigal ?

  • actually you are right, there are few who have attained the range and control of pt. bhimsen joshi. un ka javab nahin. . but to most who listen to music it is all about bringing joy to ones life and an expression of sentiments and poetry. in that aspect not only was saigol able to bring joy to the masses with his singing, he also did it with a wonderful andaaz and flamboyant manner.

  • Well - at some point all words become jargon, and only what matters is the swar/sur. That's where the vocal aalap or even non-vocal instruments could bring tears. What we call "dard" is the only thing feeling left. Without offending others, I guess it is the progression of each individual towards nirvana (from speech to speechlessness)!

  • It better to hide our ignorance. Pt Bhimsen Joshi himself has paid tribute to KLS time and again. He does not care what today's generation talks about him as the earlier generations of KLS and others is the reference for him. What you are writing is mere arrogance out of ignorance.

  • wonderful version, have to admit that Saigal pulls my heartstings more...

  • music that is familiar to the ears often does.

  • that could be true!

Saigal's version is simpler, obviously, with a time limit, but I think it is the way he "rolls off" the words -I don't know how to explain it better- that I like.

This is no way meant to criticise Bhimsen Joshi, a truly great exponent of vocal music. Am a fan.

  • i understand and that is perfectly fine. one can appreciate both after all

  • BEAUTIFUL!! :D

  • @jessop123

Can't agree more with you. There is someother magic in KLS's voice and rendering.

  • Wow !!! Simply superb !!!

  • Koi bata sakta hai kaunse raag mein panditji ne gaya hai?

  • @amogh27 thise is pure raga Behravi thatt Behravi. I love it too Pt. Bhimsen is one of the best.

  • Bhairavi yaar aur kya !

  • Comment removed

  • Simply The PURE

  • This is truly priceless. A collectors item.

  • Nostalgia of the original by another master pings here. But Pandit Sahib is legend and no comparisons need to be made.

  • wah sahab wah

  • listen to the pain emedded in the rendition

  • i'm glad to see this classic thumri here...wonderfully sung...

  • Great song and grest singing by the legend. .... Somehow this still does not match Kundan Lal saigal's rendering in Street Singer. There was no match for KLS when it comes to bringing the pathos and emotion to a song.

  • I have very high respect to Bhimsen Joshi and he is far superior when it comes to pure classical, but..... when it comes to Babul Mora..many attempted, no one could draw a parallel with K L Saigal..not even Bhimsen Joshiji

  • @allstringsattached : thats your opinion frnd ! No doubt Sehgal has immortalised his heavenly rendition of this traditional 'cheez' in Bhairavi. But the variety that Panditji has brought into this rendition is also unmatchable!

Again, Sehgal sang it for a film, Panditji has sung it here as part of a classical concert - how can they be possibly compared? Both are gr8 - just enjoy each one !!

  • another masterful rendition. can anyone tell me as to where & when it was sung

  • wah bhai wah

  • wah saeN wah

  • wounderful
