McArthur decided to take the city by force when they had already embargoed Japan and in a little more time Japan will already surrender because of the atomic bombs. How I wish Manila was spared from the destruction. It was one of the most modern and cosmopolitan cities in Asia at that time. Afterwards the reconstruction resulted to poor planning that made it ugly.

dude you need to read your history books... ever hear of something called the Treaty of Paris of 1898? The only reason the Americans built bases in the Philippines was because the islands became territory ceded to them by the Spanish after the Spanish-American War. Heck, even before the Americans came, the Spanish built their own bases there too. Look up Fortress of Corregidor. So did the Japanese attack because of that base? NOPE!

my neighbor is 82 and lost his arm in the philipines in a section called mindanao.i explained to him that the modern day filipinos are ungrateful and forget the sacrifice of the thosands of americans killed .he was disgusted and sad.he said he hopes todays americans never help the filipinos again.they can do thier own fighting.

My grandfather was in the 37th Division/National Guard from Ohio that fought into the city. I remember as a kid he spoke of MacArthur's ego in forcing an entry to the city and cutting off any escape route for the Japanese Marines. Also said Pasay could have been spared and Intramuros destruction was mostly American shells.

It is a fact of WWII that Manila was the second most destroyed city after Warsaw in Poland. Its unfortunate that Gen. McArthur decided to take the city by force when they had already embargoed Japan and in a little more time Japan will already surrender because of the atomic bombs. How I wish Manila was spared from the destruction. It was one of the most modern and cosmopolitan cities in Asia at that time. Afterwards the reconstruction resulted to poor planning that made it ugly.

The us had its fair share in destroying the city of manila. not only did their artillery destroy most of our infrastructure, they even bombed the city without hesitation. my professor even discussed that from vcruz in taft ave all the way up to the northern portion, the buildings were levelled to the ground bec of american bombers. its sad how they treat us like a neglected brother nevertheless, we really had no choice. Lets just get our act together and try to restore the beauty of the city.

Silly idea as it may seem, but great leaders of our land thought of the same thing back then like Gen. E. Aguinaldo and S.Laurel Sr.which were bought charged as collaborators to the Japs. Just for your info my friend, simply because the war was going nowhere for the allied troops that time and common people were suffering. Manila was even declared as an open city meaning it can be occupied without resistance.

That's not necessarily true. The japs were aggressors, occupiers, rapists and murders of all their asian neighbors. Try reading some history. I think the philippines would have been taken regardless of US presence because of it's strategic significance (location).
