Christian's solo is soo nasty in this. One of the few bassist who really can transcend with the instrument. If u were to transcribe this solo for piano or sax it would still be a bitch to play. He's the man hands down.
Heard him bow "Moonlight in Vermont" many years ago at the old Catalinas in LA and it knocked my socks off. Heard him play electric as well and he sure as hell ain't no slouch there!
I love these really angular, avante garde, bass solos. But they are so hard to come by. Takes alot of mental energy and focus to create that kind of solo..
THIS IS GROUP IS SOOO BAD ASSSS, no other words to describe how these guys are just throwing down these lines out of the changes, sooo abstract. Thank you for this recording, monnnnsters!
Christian McBride, hands down is the best bassist in Jazz today!! And Alvin Queen is legendary...Benny Green too...this was a great GROUP and is a great recording. thanks for sharing
I don't think "sounds so much better on the upright than the electric" is the right phrase. I think it's "he has much more personality" on the upright. He plays the shit out of the electric, too. I'm sure if he played the electric as much as he played the acoustic, he'd have as much of an undeniable personality on that, too.

First off, what are you talking about, the sound isnt that good?
With all due respect for bass players around the world, they are in the same boat as trombone players, the are much needed in certain contexts, but they will never ever be interesting as a solo instrument in an ensemble
That's a matter of opinion. Some players can make a trombone a bass sound so good that it does become interesting; someone like Christian McBride, for instance.
damn fine!

I like how Christian's solo at the end tied in the melody creating a smooth transition to the next part of the piece!!!

exactly, and so much can be done with the bow too, which gives it a whole different sound

Guys like Paul Chambers and Christian McBride are as interesting as any other soloists. Same goes for bone players.
