  • woahhhhhhhh if your going to play art of shredding play it right its art mother fucker an your squeals sound like shit, nice guitar tho

  • thats it im getting my washburn fixed......

  • Oops looke like it

  • Is your index finger doin anything(other than covering unused strings) it liike like it...

  • Kennn you should do an intro for meee cause I need one hahahaaaa

  • jus fyi ur playing art of shredding wrong. u need way more mutes and WAY more harmonics but th dives are good

  • Here's a lesson for you. With your fret hand, pluck with your index finger behind the fourth fret and bar(very important) mute with ring finger on the fourth fret wire all AT THE SAME TIME. This will require little practice getting used to. You'll get the cleanest, richest and consistent banshee dives unheard of(besides me and few others around me) when this tech is mastered. This can be done on all strings. REmember you learned this from me. Let me know when your ready for another lesson.

  • @Imat00l

Not sure what this has to do with this video but, what you're describing is pretty much what people mistaken for "dime squeal" when they first try to mimic Dime.

  • @KenSushi I think you should reread my post a little more carefully. I wasn't talking about plucking harmonic string chimes with a pick or anything to do with Dime. In fact I think it's a better tech than Dime's(RIP) since there's no need to pre-slack the strings. i.e. you can start with a high squeal and then dive everytime -no fail or any extra noise. Generally whammy squeals are 2x more accessible.

btw I was just look at dist boxes, ended here out of curiosity and thought to share.

  • @Imat00l look it up . thats taken sorry to burst yer bubble dude.. good luck thinking of something original tho

  • Do you need certain equipment? Like a certain whammy bar? Because I'm going to get my guitar fixed in a few days and once I get it working again, I want to do this. So Im just wondering so I can get that equipment while im at the music store.

    Great tut! You're the man

  • Does everybody make that face when you do a Floyd squeal? :)

  • Thanks alot m8 ;D Been at it for 30 minutes now and it worked like a charm! ( once xD ) And damn it got me by surprise! Sends a chill down my spine \m/

  • Yeah. My Floyd can't bend the strings like that but I can somewhat do the Dime squeels. I have a Schecter Damien 6 FR guitar. Nice HellraiserFR. :D

  • Great lesson, once again! You might remember me, I asked you a while ago and simply gave up because I simply can't do it. I can play Malmsteen, Children of Bodom, Pantera, Megadeth, sweep picking, shredding all over the place but I can't fucking squeal! I'm using a Jackson WRMG with a Jackson Licensed FR and a Peavey 6505+ on the lowest volume. I use my thumb to mute the lower strings andmy index finger to mute E and B. Then I use my middle finger to pluck the G-string. While its ringing, I lo

  • @SwedishBerzerker wer the FR and lightly touch the G string asI raise it. I don't move my thumb or anything. The only thing moving is my right arm and my middle finger. But I can't seem to mute the D-string with my thumb. In your video, you mute all strings, lower the bar, and kind of release the entire left hand as you pluck the G-string before touching it and raising the bar. THEN muting the strings. Am I right?

  • @SwedishBerzerker Yeah, I don't know if it's because i've been doing a while but, this question made me stop and carefully watch how I do it again. And in my recent days it seems I've developed a weird method of muting the D string with the same finger I create the natural harmonic with.

  • @KenSushi Oh, so you're muting E and A with your thumb, D with your middle or whatever finger you use and B and e with your index? I'm going to have to try that out! :P

  • dude what kinda gitar is that i've got a rr1 and i cna't come close to get the tones your pulling off. are those acitve emg 81 and 81's and whats you amp and gain settings and tunings also your string size

  • How to you get it of the 2nd fret?? I have the floyd where the strings are sphegati like then I dump the bar and fret the 2nd fret on tue g string and i get nothing

  • Hellraiser \m/

  • Ohhh i think you mean 'Natural harmonic' bro!

You referred to the pinch harmonic. I got confused! :-)

  • great lesson man!

  • Great tutorial!

  • dude you just made my day.. you have no idea how hard i've been looking for this sort of a tutorial. Honestly im more addicted to finger tapping and its plethora of techniques. But squeals are also an area of interest which i've not quite focussed on. I have a question though. I play on a fender strat. The tuning kinda gets a bit screwed up every time i use the whammy.. any particular reason? i notice u mentioned something along those lines in the vid.

  • @sirdavidvaz i'm glad almost 3 years later and this still helps people out a bit. The thing I mentioned about the strat and stuff is that I just wouldn't recommend doing this on anything but, on a floyd rose exactly because of what you're experiencing. These squealies abuse the heck out of your trem. And if you don't have a string neck locking thing of any sort your strings will just detune.

  • @sirdavidvaz well that used to happen to me because i also have the regular fixed bridge..bt my friend told me that if u tighten the screws on the bridge as tight as it wud go bt nt too tight, the guiatr wont go out of tune much...it wrked for me...nw only occasionally my G goes a little off

  • @sirdavidvaz You could try installing locking tuners, should help a good bit.

  • BAD ASS that was fucking awesome

  • I guess I need to get a Floyd Rose on my Ibanez. It just has the standard Ibanez tremolo and as much as I've screwed with it, it doesn't give me much dump and hell, whenever I just go apeshit on it, gotta friggin' retune. Even getting a new truss rod didn't help with that. ANy suggestions that I might not have thought of?

  • kahler will work. String 2 point fender right and that will work but you will need a lubed nut. the traditional fender 6-point trem is possible, but more trouble than its worth. Bigsby, make a video to upload to failblog, lol.

  • THANK YOU MAN YOUR THE BEST. dimes vid didnt explain it that well and it only took a couple of trys thank you very much :D

  • kahler beats out floyd rose so badly

  • @Rocker095150 what? is that why you can't find a crappy kahler anymore...they always get fucked...Man You have no idea what you are talking about...and all your comments are so immature and stupid.

  • that is a natural not artificial

  • THANX FOR THE INFO BRO . U GOT A GREAT CLEAN SOUND TO YOUR STYLE. WOULD LOVE TO HEAR SOME OF UR MUSIC.

  • GREAT LESSON MY MAN , I HAVE TRYING TO GET THIS DOWN PACK BUT IN A STRUGGLE. I WANTED TO ASK YOU. WHEN FIRST STRIKE THE STRING DO YOU USE A FOOT PEDAL TO KILL THE SOUND AND THEN GRADUALLY LET UP ON THE PEDAL AS HIT THE HARMONICS? OR ARE YOU ROLLING FOOT PEDAL FREE? THANKS AGAIN MY MAN . FAN OF UR STYLE.

  • @ANOTHERKILLAH

I don't use a foot pedal at all. If you watch my video when I perform the squeal slow clean and with distortion all I do is exactly that. It's just that once you get used to it you'll do it almost instantly. So to sum it up, yeah I roll pedal free.

  • Thanks man

  • Are you using an effect on that?

  • @PurEfuCkEnmEtAl Yeah I don't remember what, probably flanger. whatever it was there was too much of it.

  • 0:20 eargasm

  • Natural harmonic, not artificial.

  • @anesthesiakea good job Sherlock.

  • OOOH!! i did it!! thanks! i can't stop! hahaha

  • so to do it you flick the string while going down then coming up you do the artificial harmonic?

  • @abester22 you flick the string, then like almost a split second later dump the bar and then hit the harmonic

  • @stygian616 dude no offense and i appreciate your help but i got them after i commented on this

  • @abester22 thats good man, grats!!

  • @stygian616 thanks dude.

  • Great lesson bro!

  • u make me so horny

  • if you watch the nerdy guy who does How to do "Dime Squeals" he hits it on the 2 and he tore that fucker up.its towards the end of the vid

  • the dreaded 2nd fret is very hard I've never been able to get it but if you can get it good it'll tear you a new one no doubt.

  • so thiswont work with the ibanez ZR tremolo since its wammy doesnt change string level

  • can you do it in normal tuning???

  • yes

  • DUDE you kick ass I struggled to get this, I watched this nerdy guy (who was really good at it, but he fails at teaching) for like 10 minutes and then I found this, picked up my guitar and wham I was squealing like I had been doing it for years. thanks!!!

  • God video man. I had the squealing down but i was wondering why it wasn't sounding like Dimebag's. Now I know. I was damping at first.

  • and he use reverb and stuff like this so his squeals are deeper.

  • ive got the same strap as u man!

  • hahaha i remember when i used to go to guitar center when i was 13 and do that all day because i didnt have a floyd rose. not many people liked me there. lol

  • This guide did it!

  • what do you mean damp your strings?

  • by pushing down/pulling up or whatever way on the trem/whammy bar to relieve tension on the strings. so they hang a little.

  • @Gu1tarFr3ak69 dump the bar means to push down or pull back (depending on whammy bar position) until strings hang loose then hit your pinch harmonic and bring it back up

  • Dime played his squeals in the beginning, middle and end of his songs. Thats why it was his trade mark. Not just here or there by mistake.

  • lmao when you just Degraded slipknot, but thanks alot man, it was very helpful

  • Ibanez makes great trems, excluding the edge III. The only bad thing is D tunas dont work with them for those of you that use drop d

  • now i MUST get a floyd rose

    sick axe btw

  • sweet squeeal

  • I did't learn a thing.

  • theres natural harmonics all over the string, just the ones that sound the best are over the 4th 5th 7th 9th and 12th frets, but theres no natural harmonic over the first fret, and the last squeal Dime does on the cemetery gates is over the 2nd fret, but if you wanna hear some pretty cool natural harmonics, listen to Heresy - Pantera, the beginning of that is all natural harmonics, theres a video on here somewhere that Dime talks about it

  • neeeds work

  • Cemetary Gates is only on the fourth fret squeel (my favorite). Nice lesson bro, good luck with the second fret squeel. It really does suck to master :P

  • Your room is awesome...3:16 thrilling motorbike sound followed by police siren PERFECT..

  • 1:51 awesome.

  • My guitar gets out of tune when I press the whammy. What should i do?

  • tune it again lol

  • Buy a new one XD..what guitar do you have??

  • 20old one

  • You need to have tremolo system :P Or else your strings will get out of tune. I have floyd rose and i recommend it!

  • K,ill try it,thanks

  • buy a charvel

  • Why do you call this the Dime squeal? Slayer have been doing this waaaay before Pantera was formed and Im sure they were not the first either....

  • Both bands were formed in '81 and actually I think I've heard that Satriani did it quite often before that, but that's beside the point.Reason for Dime Squeals is because that is just what these squeals are most commonly called it seems and typically it always seems to be the Pantera fans that wish to learn how to do the squeals due to how big of a role it played in Dimebag's playing. +Most people that search for just squeals/squealies are either looking for pinch harmonics or have a pig fetish.

  • I would not really call the early version of Pantera 'Pantera'...they were a god awful glam rock group, and they themselves chose to ignore their first 3 or 4 albums, it is not really the same band. Slayer were metal right from the start.

It may be what people call them (dime squeals)but it does not seem right really, he certainly did not invent or popularize them. Although I do concede the point about mostly Pantera fans wanting to learn em so fair enough. They are called divebombs though no?

  • hmm, dive bombs I think are dumping the bar down when a harmonic is hit rather than pulling up. Maybe 'dive up'? xD. Beats me.

  • Hah, I think you just coined a new phrase..good job dude!

  • I agree, this was already a typical metal cliche by the time Dime was doing it. Nowadays though, alot of people associate this with him. Just a lack of perspective really.

  • I remember Hendrix doing one in some old video. Dime just popularized them.

  • looks like a samurai on this video

  • Whoa, I didn't realize you were asian until I saw this video.

  • Dime Squeals!

  • man i cant wait till i get my new guitar in 3 days, it has a floyd rose special and i really want to mess around with it

  • lol @ the slipknot joke

  • Im sorry but ;)

  • Awesome lesson man!

but hey i have a question, i have an LTD and i cant get good harmonics out of it, i can do pinch harmonics well on my Ibanez (but it's a fixed bridge so i cant do squeals) so is there anything i can do to optimize my harmonics?

I heard different strings help, fixing the action, heightening the pickups. I don't know =/

  • i have an LTD too (KH-202) an i can get harmonics out of it all day. just go to your local music store and ask them how an they should be able to tell you exactly how.

  • dam that sounded cool the cemetery gates part. can you use a starcaster to ?

  • More information about the 2nd fret please... I just can't get it to last more than 3-4 seconds even though I turned my gain up to max -_- I want it so desperately! I would buy anything.. Distortion pedals, sustainers, ebow's... Anything!! How can I get it to last 10 seconds :(

  • I like your tone, dude!

  • Good Video. You rock!!

  • thats a lot flanger effect

  • Great lesson man! I just wonder if the string gauge matters?

  • nope, doesn't seem to matter. now if you were to do squeelies on E A D strings than maybe.

  • Ok, but I can't figure what I'm doing wrong. I don't have an Original Floyd Rose, I have the Jackson Licensed that comes with the Jackson WRMG (EMG). And a Peavey 6505+, with volume at 1 and gain at 7.5. I block all strings with my thumb and pinky except the 3rd string and as I strum across all strings only the 3rd is heard. I use my finger to make the string sound and I quickly dive and pull the bar up. When the bar is in the middle, I barely touch the string as I pull it up all the way nytips?

  • well tell me a little more, what kind of sound comes out if any after your try the harmonic?

  • If I'm on the fifth fret, just a regular natural harmonic. On the fourth> frets - nothing. Sometimes I hear a vague harmonic sound, but it stops after a second.

  • awsome lesson man

  • Yes, CriticsConfession. A trem is a trem, however if its not a floyd rose, it'll suck ass.

  • its definately possible to squeal without a floyd rose. my ibanez has a fat 10 trem or something and i can still squeal. its usually doesnt go out of tune 4 me but sometimes when i pull back too hard i either break a string or it goes way out of tune but other than that it works fine.

  • this is fucking impossible. this is the most frustrating thing i have ever tryed in my life. not so much challenging, but so frustrating im going to lose my fucking mind... GOD DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • A Trem is a fucking Trem... It doesn't matter. I use an Edge III and it works just as fine as it does on a Floyd Rose.

  • i think the last squeal in cemetery gates is the 2nd fret

  • its the art of sherreding

  • 2:04 moo!

good video, def got this now

  • Thanks for this video, now I gotta buy a better guitar and try that :D

  • The last Cemetery Gates squeal is the perfect 2nd. ;)

    Cheers

  • HELLRAISER!!!!!

  • hey man thanks alot for that very well explained i got them like nothing and ye the 2nd is abt of a bitch hehe cheers

  • good job explaining things, most tutorials or lessons on here suck because people cant explain things properly. thank you, your lesson has really helped.

  • Dives actually cure the out of tune strings caused by bends. This was proven by the user dnometalguitar actually.

  • the squeal on the third fret in cemetery gates is fucking awesome!

  • do u have to tune lower?

  • YOU STOLE MY GUITAR :P

I'll give this a shot when I get some free time :)

  • badass. and i dig that you're usin a schecter!

  • love the strap man

    got the same one

  • do you use a regular pinch harmonic technique with your pick, or do you only use your tremolo bar with your right hand and the strings with your left hand? I have tried a bit now but it won´t work=/

  • You do a natural harmonic

  • would an edge III work for them???

  • yes accualy i perfer edge lll more because they stay in tune better for me

  • my current guitar only has a tremolo. ive been playing long enough to be able to get a new guitar, and this time a floyd rose is a MUST for me. Only problem is, im kinda clueless as to what i should guitar i should buy. I have the Ibanez JX1200 currently.

anyone mind handing out some advice?

  • I absolutely love Ibanez but, typically they don't have the original floyd rose bridge. If you're looking to really replicate the squealies, find a guitar that has an original floyd rose. Just look around a bit, you can get a really nice high-end guitar @$600. Your best bet is to go to a place like guitar center, try a few guitars that match your style, see if the neck is comfortable, etc and then check on the webz to see if you can find a better pricing on'em.

  • i usually check if any used versions of the guitar i want are in. theyre mainly just dirty and $100 cheaper, although the web idea sounds alot more convenient

but thanks for the info. im looking for all i need to effectively replicate dimes squeals.

  • try a jackson or a dean. they handle them the best.. and avoid liscensed floyd roses. stick to the originals.

  • if you want a top tremolo use a floyd rose and Kahler is very good too.

i have a jackson licenced floyd rose on my RX10D and it's great.

  • Khaler's are good it's just if you OD on them the strings will break... a lot.

Although, I have heard of a trick with chap stick to avoid that.

  • thnx dude tis toturial really worked =) all the best mate

  • nice guitar i got the same one in white. i didnt notice until i saw the gothic cross fret markers in albony. im going to have fun with these dime squeals.

  • aw, lucky. I got this guitar when they first had come out, so all they offered in color were the straight black gloss or cherry finishes :(. I would've much rather have had the white finish if it were available.

  • I can only nail the squeal if I strum with the pick, not flick off with my finger. Other than that, I got it.

3rd fret G string harmonic sounds so amazing.

  • spanish ?? please ...

  • Thanks dude

This is a the best explain of sqealing that i wathced !!!

  • holy shit. i think that cemetary gates solo was perfect. nice

  • 2:30

its a natural harmonic :P good lesson though brotha, explained it perfect, dime'd be proud :)

  • I used to own tremlo guitar's very touchey set up's know your stuff before wasting your money stuff like drop d very hard to achive with tremlo system, plus humitity, elevation can change is sound!!in short buying tremlo buy a good one!!

  • If you get a floyd rose you best fucking get a locking one or you're screwed!

  • hey man. your great. haha, i got the same strap. nice job

  • yea its not hard to do dime squeals without a floyd, i can do them on my old strat, but 1) goes out of tune like crazy 2) sounds like shit compared to when i do it on my floyds

  • i cant wait to get my charvel so i can try this out.

  • lols theres a skull in the back ground

  • dont worry about it, he probaly just blew some one's mind with his sick guitar trick

  • lols and kept it as a trophy for achieving his first mind blowing squeal?

  • a floyd rose never goes out of tune but replacing strings and tuning is really pissing me off

  • get one of the old ones :D they're great to do Dime squeals on!

  • i got a dean from hell guitar

  • well then forget practicing how to play it! practice re-stringing/tuning it! haha

  • why i just let the guy form the shop do it im learning it from him

  • but once you learn, try it yourself. :) I broke a Dean ML once trying to tune and restring it. but I learned and it's actually pretty easy. Just keep practicing and getting to know your guitar man! May the wings be with you! :D

  • yep Rock is right. Actually what I did was watch a youtube video on restringing/tuning FR. That was still a lil vague for me so I brought it to a local guitar/music shop and asked if I can watch them set the guitar up. From then on It became pretty much cake.

  • woo! someone who agrees with me, finally! :D

  • is a tremolo bar compulsary to do this??

mine snapped off so the thread remains in the guitar :(

  • Some do. I have a stupid squire strat so i can't pull up. If you have like a fender tremolo bar it can break if you pull it up.

  • Interesting.I have a Vintage Tremolo bridge(LTD M-50 Guitar),which pulls up pretty well, but doesn't go down easily.I mean the strings barely dampen after pushing the bar to the body of the guitar.

  • mine did that too i have a fender strat it pissed me off

  • It's called a floyd rose

  • is there a certin kind of guitar you have to use cuz i got the really cheap fender strat its alright but i need a les paul

  • you cant do squeals with the lp unless you got that weird tremolo system... i'd suggest any metal guitar to do it, maybe change the pickups (Seymour Duncan SH8 invader, EMGs, etc.). and you of course want nice amount of gain
