The media was aware of Michael's shyness specifically when it came to women, so they used that against him to make him out to be gay, but he wasn't. Just because he kept his private life private, especially when it came to females he'd date, they assumed he was gay, but as shown here and in many other examples, Michael was very much so a straight man.
