Yes, that's true. They believed in the Bushido Code, something dating back to the Samaries (don't know if that's how you spell it). They did believe that dieing for their emperor was more honorable than surrendering, so sometimes they would rather kill themselves. One way that they committed suicide was to pull the pin on the Type 99 grenade and to hold it against their helmet when American troops would approach them. That way, they would kill both themselves and the enemy.

The imperial family tryed to convince the soldiers to suicide themselves, using the "bushido" esxcuse for them to be willing to kill themselves and the enemy, in kamikaze ambushes or atacks.

Its sad and stupid, but at the time, soldiers were blind, i mean, i am sure they wren´t, but what could they do? there is nothing on the bushido code, saying suicide along with the enemy is correct, it doesn´t exist.
