Updated. Okay Mayer. Born and Raised sould be a little like this: 1. Broken Time 2. Something like Olivia 3. Don't Think Twice It's alright 4. Taking on Water 5. Break in the Clouds 6. Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey 7. Speak for Me 8. Portable Heart 9. The Hurt 10. A Face to Call Home 11. Born and Raised 12. Til' Summer Comes Around (feat. Keith Urban) Grammy? I'm thinking at least 5.
Hypothetically Mayer, your next album: 1. Something Like Olivia 2. Broken Time 3. The Hurt 3. Break in the Clouds 4. Don't Think Twice It's Alright 5. Everything You'll Ever Be (Bathroom) 6. Taking on Water 7. Speak for Me 8. Whisky, Whiskey, Whiskey 9. Til' Summer Comes Around (Featuring Keith Urban) - (But.. mayorized) 10. I've Got Dreams 11. Voodo Child/Couldn't Stand the Weather
@FreaquedeMusique It just so happened that I wrote that comment before I knew that born and raised was the title track. I've learned to really like that song since, but at the time of the comment I just hadn't paid much attention to it.
"There was a time when August sun was high and centered on me, but it dipped behind my back and settled down." It sounds like he is talking about being at the peak of his fame, in the center of the spotlight, and then it all crashing down. "Used to square up with the land, used to size it in my hand." This makes me think of a man who had everything out in front of him, the land was his for the taking, and then it was gone, as fast as the sun sets beyond the horizon. Its incredibly moving.
It won't be on his new album because this was recorded before Battle Studies came out. It is a very beautiful song though. It would be really cool though if he ever made an EP album with some of his rare songs he has performed in the past. Included on the album would have to be the "Hotel Bathroom Song" he performed last year. Very good song lyrically.
"...but IT fell behind the line that leads to sky"? Is he referring to FAME here? Does anyone have an idea what he is talking about in the verse which contains this line?
@geezloueeze not sure but i think he's saying line that meets the sky, referring to the horizon like when the sun goes down. i think he's saying "square up with the land" and "used to size it in" his hand, maybe its like he's talking about how when you feel like you used to fit in the place your in but sometimes you just drop off the grid. Don't know really but awesome song
@TheJayBz "the grid" meaning the world of us common folk? If so, this song sounds like that lonely man at the top in a world he created, but not sure how to navigate. Does it to you/? i love when he drops into what's true from his heart to write songs. It meets my heart, too, and I am deeply moved.
@geezloueeze that whole verse is talking about the sun, which i imagine is just a metaphor for hope in finding a better relationship. at first the sun was "high and centered" him, saying he was hopeful, but as time progressed, it faded into the horizon, or "behind the line that meets the sky". now he's left in darkness, taking on water, as if to say he's losing hope in a new relationship. hope this helps!
@tault002 Wow, a whole new context from what others have mentioned. So, in your opinion, this is about the journey to find one's spiritual partner. Wow, now all the lyrics are falling into place so much better. What an amazing song. Shoot, it sounds so gosh darn lonely. But, I guess, if someone really wants to finds that certain someone, she or he have to be willing to venture far from home and take on water. This song is absolutely amazing. I adore it.
@TheBigdummi its a mixture of both the best way to get used to playing like him is to learn stop this train heart of life or who says . once you get that down you can slow it down for songs like this
don't know what producer screwed him up with battle studies. but songs like this and other unreleased ones could've created one of the most beautiful albums ever.
If he does record this, in my opinion it should honestly be just him alone. No drums. No extra guitars. No overly expressive 200 man japanese mensa-graduated child prodigy orchestra. Just him. My opnion is without the over production you hear a little bit more of the struggle, like "I'm trying to get there by myself." But I don't like to wax poetic. On a side note, when I hear this I always think about castaway when Tom Hank's character loses Wilson. Good times.
man, God has so gifted this man so much. I don't know about anyone else but I find a huge disconnect between the creepy things I see him do and say on the news and the eloquence and taste with which he writes. For this reason I hate loving his music as much as I do.
@nietorm that you are wrong. say he didnt put some of his other songs ( hearthbreak warfare, gravity, waiting on the world to change, half of my heart) on his albums you would say the exact same thing about those songs.
@p8ntbala14 im not a big fan of half of my heart or waiting on the world to change. they're too pop. Id like to hear a studio version of come when i call even just a couple more songs from the trio. this song doesnt use any pop hooks or radio friendly melodies and still blows half of my heart out of the water.
@guitarskater11 the live album? or a recording of some other performance?. id like those songs to replace some other songs i think he could have done without on his solo stuff
@nietorm there are studio versions haha, i think who did you think i was was released as a single and come when i call was the b side, then good love is on this way was on the special edition of the waiting on the world to change single
I hate the fact that this isn't on Battle Studies. It's hauntingly beautiful. But I guess I'll have to be thankful for this amazing and flawless performance. It propably doesn't get any better than this anyways:)
Hey there, maybe some fellow guitarists can help me out with my question. Does John Mayer anchor when he plays guitar? I heard it's a bad habit but he doesn't seem too affected by it. But what do I know? I'm a rookie guitarist, lol. Any help would be appreciated. :)
"Assassin" has that bridg-y thing and it seems to me that this song ultimately got boiled down into that...I hope Im wrong though, because I like this on its own more than probably anything else on the new album. Any music-head able to do some kind of harmonic analysis and back my assertion up?? It just hints at it, but most artists wouldn't want to put a song and another song based on part of the other song on the same album, if even release both at all.
I'm sprry, but you're wrong.. He started working on the lyrics and music for assassin about 4 years ago, and he finished it in september this year, or something like that. Or at least so he says on his twitter! This on the other hand, is in another key, another tempo and was complete over a year earlier than assassin. They might have some relation to eachother, but it definitely is not any of those things you named :O
great song. sad it didnt make it to the album. but i heard john mentioned he had to cut a lot of songs because it's a theme album. taking on water is certainly not about heartbreak.
do you know why 'crossroads' made it then? i say that if he was going for heartbreak theme then "glad to be unhappy' would have been perfect to end the album with
well, that's again how we think. we don't know how much john loves which blues song. i actually also have been expecting some collaboration with sting for the second album in a row.
all in all, i hope taking on water will see a release somewhere somehow and HOPEFULLY it will be guitar and voice, cos this one is definitely a no frills song.
No, it won't be. It was recorded for it, but was cut off the final track listing. Battle Studies is on iTunes now for pre-order, and you can see the songs that are on it.
Musicians often use live shows to test their new musical pieces. This must not have tested well enough (either in fan support, or for his own preferences) in live shows for him to put on the album as a main track. John's own judgement is fine. How many hit records do you have?
Nothing against john but out of all the new songs of his this i think is the best. If i could come up with a chord progression like that id be a happy man. Why the hell didnt he put it on the album. Is it that its not poppy enough or something?
i absolutely agree with the comment on the chord progression. the song is good but i think the average music listener would think the song builds up to nothing.. at least that's the impression i got upon my initial listening. this song would also sound good on piano.
I'm hoping the only reason that this won't be on Battle Studies is that it doesn't quite fit the heartbreak theme. I love the lyrics. Praying it will be on the next album.
lol well I did just notice his arm after watching it again, and that does give it away. But by the song I couldn't tell, and I don't know his older voice or the guitar he would be playing.
I saw someone wrote that a version on the new album with just himself and electric guitar as in this video would be cool. I agree. But does anyone else think maybe with some string arrangement as well? I reckon that would be cool just voice, guitar and strings. Just my opinion :)
thats probably because before where the light is was released to the public they did extensive mixing and mastering to make it sound perfect. Mayer is still extremely talented though. He is the Clapton of my generation.
The slight tuning slips on this make me wonder about the tune-perfect two and half hour performance on the 'Where the light is' DVD . . . I still love him, though! :-)
he'd hand off guitars. so he'd play one guitar for maybe 2 songs. 3 at most. so there was never really a need for checkin tuning, as the tuners on the others had to have been checked & double checked before that show for signs of something such as slipping.
this show was more personal. a lot less formal, so absolute perfection wasn't something necessary. perfection to the best degree - yes. absolute - nah. he's amongst fellow artists that understand things such as what you wondered about
Of course, his guitars are on a rotor that very few artists have seen the like of - now you see it, now you don't. And, I believe - aside from the tech who tunes his guitars before he gets them - there's even a little chromatic tuner at his feet, which he uses to check his guitar (in the rare event that he uses the same one for two songs running, which happens only once on the DVD).
But, again, I still think he's great, regardless of his slips.
could just be the acoustics of the room fooling you. if this had where the light is equipment and he has been working on this song for as long as those it might be pretty close
Is his guitar tuned different? The chord you can see he plays after the high D# chord (look 1:15) doesn't sound like what he actually play when I play it myself... Looks like a G#madd9 pulloff'd to a G#m, but sounds (in my ear anyway) like a F7sus4 pulloff'd to a Fm7 - Any info/ideas on that?

I saw someone wrote that a version on the new album with just himself and electric guitar as in this video would be cool. I agree. But does anyone else think maybe with some string arrangement as well? I reckon that would be cool just voice, guitar and strings. Just my opinion :)

really hope to hear this song on the new album as it is now - guitar and voice.

bran206525 2 years ago
thats probably because before where the light is was released to the public they did extensive mixing and mastering to make it sound perfect. Mayer is still extremely talented though. He is the Clapton of my generation.

This motherfucker is the guy my 9 year old will want to jam with when hes 35 like I did with Clapton. Mayer is a rare talent.

The answer probably lies with a company called Antares, who, amongst other things, make this auto-tune software that tends to be terribly handy . . .
But again, I'm going to sugar-coat it, and annihilate any such thoughts! :-D

The slight tuning slips on this make me wonder about the tune-perfect two and half hour performance on the 'Where the light is' DVD . . . I still love him, though! :-)
Aplel48 2 years ago
Well I'm sure there was an abundance of post work on that DVD. You can't expect perfection from such a long show.
alexrempel12390 2 years ago
Exactly the possibility I was contemplating. I like him too much, though - so I'll go with it being real, for now! :-)
Aplel48 2 years ago
haha. I know it's hard to admit. I wanna just believe he's flawless.
alexrempel12390 2 years ago
he'd hand off guitars. so he'd play one guitar for maybe 2 songs. 3 at most. so there was never really a need for checkin tuning, as the tuners on the others had to have been checked & double checked before that show for signs of something such as slipping.
this show was more personal. a lot less formal, so absolute perfection wasn't something necessary. perfection to the best degree - yes. absolute - nah. he's amongst fellow artists that understand things such as what you wondered about
=)
bassicvision 2 years ago
I was talking about the vocals! :-)
Aplel48 2 years ago
MY BAD!!
thought you were speaking of guitars.
now that you say that, it makes me wonder...2.5 hours...of perfection...HOW?!
that is a GREAT question.
weh. i'm not gonna strain to figure it out - i'll just keep enjoying like you are. :D

could just be the acoustics of the room fooling you. if this had where the light is equipment and he has been working on this song for as long as those it might be pretty close

It's sad that a lot of people discredit Mayer as just another pop-style singer. He really is such a talented musician.

babyruth95746 2 years ago 16
Is his guitar tuned different? The chord you can see he plays after the high D# chord (look 1:15) doesn't sound like what he actually play when I play it myself... Looks like a G#madd9 pulloff'd to a G#m, but sounds (in my ear anyway) like a F7sus4 pulloff'd to a Fm7 - Any info/ideas on that?
Szalizard 3 years ago
I found out by listening again that he plays the 11. fret on the B string, the chord being a G#sus2add9 (??) pulled off to G#sus2
