  • I love this song :')

  • Sounds alot like Drifting by Hendrix

  • On a sailboat

    I am slowly floating

    No where

    Hoping someday

    I will wash upon

    Someone elses shore

    Beautiful metaphor's in this song.

  • i could listen to this forever

  • Hypothetically Mayer, your next album: 1. Something Like Olivia 2. Broken Time 3. The Hurt 3. Break in the Clouds 4. Don't Think Twice It's Alright 5. Everything You'll Ever Be (Bathroom) 6. • @brandodeano3 Born and Raised!

  • @MatteSweden please Lord

  • @brandodeano3 What a cd it would be if that were the case.... But also add Hummingbird and Old Love to that mix too.

  • @brandodeano3 NICE.... and the voodoo child at the end in genious. hope he sees this :-/. anyone know if he's doing a live album next or studio?

  • @brandodeano3 dude you forgot age of worry and BORN AND RAISED of course...

  • @FreaquedeMusique It just so happened that I wrote that comment before I knew that born and raised was the title track. I've learned to really like that song since, but at the time of the comment I just hadn't paid much attention to it.

  • insane song writing abilities on this dude

  • good to not hear an entire crowd of prepubescent girls trying to out screech out other sounding like velociraptors from jurassic park

  • @nietorm Yeah, the girls here are musicians who like the guy for his music and want to hear unlike most girls that want his penis

  • "There was a time when August sun was high and centered on me, but it dipped behind my back and settled down." It sounds like he is talking about being at the peak of his fame, in the center of the spotlight, and then it all crashing down. "Used to square up with the land, used to size it in my hand." This makes me think of a man who had everything out in front of him, the land was his for the taking, and then it was gone, as fast as the sun sets beyond the horizon. Its incredibly moving.

  • It won't be on his new album because this was recorded before Battle Studies came out. It is a very beautiful song though. It would be really cool though if he ever made an EP album with some of his rare songs he has performed in the past. Included on the album would have to be the "Hotel Bathroom Song" he performed last year. Very good song lyrically.

  • "...but IT fell behind the line that leads to sky"? Is he referring to FAME here? Does anyone have an idea what he is talking about in the verse which contains this line?

  • @geezloueeze not sure but i think he's saying line that meets the sky, referring to the horizon like when the sun goes down. i think he's saying "square up with the land" and "used to size it in" his hand, maybe its like he's talking about how when you feel like you used to fit in the place your in but sometimes you just drop off the grid. Don't know really but awesome song

  • @TheJayBz "the grid" meaning the world of us common folk? If so, this song sounds like that lonely man at the top in a world he created, but not sure how to navigate. Does it to you/? i love when he drops into what's true from his heart to write songs. It meets my heart, too, and I am deeply moved.

  • @geezloueeze that whole verse is talking about the sun, which i imagine is just a metaphor for hope in finding a better relationship. at first the sun was "high and centered" him, saying he was hopeful, but as time progressed, it faded into the horizon, or "behind the line that meets the sky". now he's left in darkness, taking on water, as if to say he's losing hope in a new relationship. hope this helps!

  • @tault002 Wow, a whole new context from what others have mentioned. So, in your opinion, this is about the journey to find one's spiritual partner. Wow, now all the lyrics are falling into place so much better. What an amazing song. Shoot, it sounds so gosh darn lonely. But, I guess, if someone really wants to finds that certain someone, she or he have to be willing to venture far from home and take on water. This song is absolutely amazing. I adore it.

  • Maybe this will be on his new album.

  • if this isnt on his next album ima be super pissed.

  • Leaves you breathless, love the way everyone just appreciates it!

  • Comment removed

  • is he playing with his thumb pointer and middle finder, or thumb and pointer?

  • @TheBigdummi both

  • @TheBigdummi its a mixture of both the best way to get used to playing like him is to learn stop this train heart of life or who says . once you get that down you can slow it down for songs like this

  • THIS is how an audience should be.

  • Wow this was the only time I watched a video of John performing a song without some of the audience screaming like they're being killed or something.

    Great, great audience, thank you.

  • @wazupjaghetermaya as they are all music students i think they understand the need to just listen

  • @ajfindlater Yeah that's totally it, I wish everyone understood that though!

  • this is awesome. wierdly my favourite song from him

  • don't know what producer screwed him up with battle studies. but songs like this and other unreleased ones could've created one of the most beautiful albums ever.

  • If he does record this, in my opinion it should honestly be just him alone. No drums. No extra guitars. No overly expressive 200 man japanese mensa-graduated child prodigy orchestra. Just him. My opnion is without the over production you hear a little bit more of the struggle, like "I'm trying to get there by myself." But I don't like to wax poetic. On a side note, when I hear this I always think about castaway when Tom Hank's character loses Wilson. Good times.

  • man, God has so gifted this man so much. I don't know about anyone else but I find a huge disconnect between the creepy things I see him do and say on the news and the eloquence and taste with which he writes. For this reason I hate loving his music as much as I do.

  • best audience ever

  • what does the term "taking on water" mean ?

  • @drmedwuast he's relating to a ship that is sinking. The water is coming onto the ship and pushing it under; i.e. "taking on water".

  • @igotchalk1 that helped, thanks alot

  • @noahinthewhale

    the real truth?

  • Sometimes John likes to keep songs for himself, that is why it's not on Battle Studies.

  • this is absolutely beautiful......i can't get it outta my head

  • seems like his best stuff never seems to find its way into his albums.

  • agree.. but what about gravity??

  • @luisne93

its a great song but the lyrics dont compare to taking on water or in your atmosphere

  • @nietorm e.g. In You're Atmosphere

  • @MrAndrey1101 what? in you're as in you are?

  • @MrAndrey1101 ohhhhh missed the e.g part

  • @nietorm much agreed...

  • @nietorm that you are wrong. say he didnt put some of his other songs ( hearthbreak warfare, gravity, waiting on the world to change, half of my heart) on his albums you would say the exact same thing about those songs.

  • @p8ntbala14 im not a big fan of half of my heart or waiting on the world to change. they're too pop. Id like to hear a studio version of come when i call even just a couple more songs from the trio. this song doesnt use any pop hooks or radio friendly melodies and still blows half of my heart out of the water.

  • @nietorm there is a studio come when i call, good love is on the way, and who did you think i was...

  • @guitarskater11 the live album? or a recording of some other performance?. id like those songs to replace some other songs i think he could have done without on his solo stuff

  • @nietorm there are studio versions haha, i think who did you think i was was released as a single and come when i call was the b side, then good love is on this way was on the special edition of the waiting on the world to change single

  • @nietorm Totally agree. Sucker, Breakaway, Taking on Water, Lifelines, Hummingbird, etc.

  • @donotstealmythunder Well, "Hummingbird" is a Leon Russell song, not Mayer's. John's version made it on an album tho. Not his own, but BB King's.

  • beautiful song

  • I hate the fact that this isn't on Battle Studies. It's hauntingly beautiful. But I guess I'll have to be thankful for this amazing and flawless performance. It propably doesn't get any better than this anyways:)

  • @HeartBeatOfYourLife I feel exactly the same. It kills me yet this is so perfect and true.

  • @C0NEZ0NE who's to say it's a bad habit? As long as you can make sound come out of the guitar, there's no right or wrong way to do it.

  • @travh2007g

I agree I think when it comes to music there is no cookie cutter way to do anything. As long as it works for you and everyone loves it.

  • uh... its been out for almost 2 months

  • its been out since november, at least it has here in the uk

  • @spidrmage hahahaha My friend it has been out. maybe 2 whole months! if not more. hahaha

    honest mistake.

  • It came out on November 17, 2009.

  • great song! not a huge fan of battle studies tho.. i much preferred continuum and heavier things

i would love to see john performing live

sucks that he only played one show in sydney!

  • damn this is getting to me

  • "Assassin" has that bridg-y thing and it seems to me that this song ultimately got boiled down into that...I hope Im wrong though, because I like this on its own more than probably anything else on the new album. Any music-head able to do some kind of harmonic analysis and back my assertion up?? It just hints at it, but most artists wouldn't want to put a song and another song based on part of the other song on the same album, if even release both at all.

  • I'm sprry, but you're wrong.. He started working on the lyrics and music for assassin about 4 years ago, and he finished it in september this year, or something like that. Or at least so he says on his twitter! This on the other hand, is in another key, another tempo and was complete over a year earlier than assassin. They might have some relation to eachother, but it definitely is not any of those things you named :O

  • mind-blowing talent. Thanks for sharing!

  • i miss when he had the low haircut. not that i don't like his new hair i just liked the short haircut a little bit better.

  • What a fantastic crowd. Showing him some respect and keeping quiet.

  • great song. sad it didnt make it to the album. but i heard john mentioned he had to cut a lot of songs because it's a theme album. taking on water is certainly not about heartbreak.

  • do you know why 'crossroads' made it then? i say that if he was going for heartbreak theme then "glad to be unhappy' would have been perfect to end the album with

  • probably crossroads was his mandatory blues fix))

  • i think he could have picked a better song for his blues fix to fit the heartbreak theme of the album

  • well, that's again how we think. we don't know how much john loves which blues song. i actually also have been expecting some collaboration with sting for the second album in a row.

all in all, i hope taking on water will see a release somewhere somehow and HOPEFULLY it will be guitar and voice, cos this one is definitely a no frills song.

  • I'm pretty sure this is going to be on the new album.

  • it's already not there

  • aw! WTF!

  • you think he'll release this one and some of the others on an ep or his next album?

  • taking on water is gonna be on the battle studies!? anyone know?!

  • Nope according to the tracklist that was released this won't be on the album :/. I wouldn't mind seeing it as either a bonus track or on an EP.

  • No, it won't be. It was recorded for it, but was cut off the final track listing. Battle Studies is on iTunes now for pre-order, and you can see the songs that are on it.

  • wow, great song

  • I wouldn't mind seeing this song on an EP or something it's a great song :D

  • Also, that is the great thing about music. If you enjoy a song, it doesn't have to be on an album for you to enjoy it.

  • Musicians often use live shows to test their new musical pieces. This must not have tested well enough (either in fan support, or for his own preferences) in live shows for him to put on the album as a main track. John's own judgement is fine. How many hit records do you have?

  • Comment removed

  • That intro riff is so powerful. It bleeds emotion. Great song.

  • Nothing against john but out of all the new songs of his this i think is the best. If i could come up with a chord progression like that id be a happy man. Why the hell didnt he put it on the album. Is it that its not poppy enough or something?

  • i absolutely agree with the comment on the chord progression. the song is good but i think the average music listener would think the song builds up to nothing.. at least that's the impression i got upon my initial listening. this song would also sound good on piano.

  • I'm hoping the only reason that this won't be on Battle Studies is that it doesn't quite fit the heartbreak theme. I love the lyrics. Praying it will be on the next album.

    I love you John:)

  • It's an amazing song, I think it is on Battle Studies, he just changed the name of it.

  • Comment removed

  • it's not. which sucks because i love this song.

  • Comment removed

  • nope, it's not...kinda sukcs

  • really good! it's incredible how he just keep evovling

  • Happy 1 year creation date! October 8, 2009 lol

  • holy crap this is beautiful!

  • He looks so jacked

  • so sick, this album is gonna be awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • amazing....can't wait for battlestudies anymore!!!

  • November 17 =)

  • wow

  • emotional song.

  • yea, but coldplay sucks

  • after he was famous....

  • after

  • are you kidding

  • what do you mean am I kidding? why?

  • even if you don't know this song, look at his left arm and listen to his voice. or look at the guitar he is playing.

  • lol well I did just notice his arm after watching it again, and that does give it away. But by the song I couldn't tell, and I don't know his older voice or the guitar he would be playing.

  • the guitar is "the black one" and its his custom. only like 80 some made.

  • oh wow cool

  • they are going to make a bunch of production replicas too, i dont know what the difference is.

  • why did i get a thumbs down for saying its a lyrical powerhouse. The lyrics are amazing...and anyone who doesn't hear that...is deaf.

  • probably one of the most lyrical powerhouse songs ever written.

  • This, explains everything I'm going through right now.

  • wicked they should make a cover for it

  • i think he'll put the record out during the summer. maybe autumn, but on his twitter he says he's working hard.

    so look forward :)

  • JM is great, can't wait untill "Battle Studies" will be released. =)

  • I agree, this record's going to be awesome!

  • This is like Live at Luther College.

  • i really love this song.

because there's a little bit of truth in it.

  • i hope this is on his battle studies album

  • it is

  • has he announced that?

  • amazing

  • and when is the new record prolly comming out?...does someone know?

  • I'm wondering the same thing.

  • kill mee ..................

  • hes using light reverb behind his blues driver with a touch of delay in it.

  • is that gonna be on the new record he is producing?

  • yes it is, i saw him show case for the second time in cali last summer, it was so amazing

  • Comment removed

  • kot

  • simply great. great writing, great chord progression, if only i was there...

  • this it's just amazing, and it almost makes me cry...

it's a really beuty song of the best guitar player ever, for me...

  • I saw someone wrote that a version on the new album with just himself and electric guitar as in this video would be cool. I agree. But does anyone else think maybe with some string arrangement as well? I reckon that would be cool just voice, guitar and strings. Just my opinion :)

  • really hope to hear this song on the new album as it is now - guitar and voice.

  • the song is definitely growing on me

  • this ganna be on battle studies?

  • hopefully! I'm pretty sure it will be

  • have you heard half of my heart omg its incredable best acoustic song since st patricks day haha

  • any1 knows the chords for this song??

  • thats probably because before where the light is was released to the public they did extensive mixing and mastering to make it sound perfect. Mayer is still extremely talented though. He is the Clapton of my generation.

  • This motherfucker is the guy my 9 year old will want to jam with when hes 35 like I did with Clapton. Mayer is a rare talent.

  • amen! lol.

  • The answer probably lies with a company called Antares, who, amongst other things, make this auto-tune software that tends to be terribly handy . . .

But again, I'm going to sugar-coat it, and annihilate any such thoughts! :-D

  • The slight tuning slips on this make me wonder about the tune-perfect two and half hour performance on the 'Where the light is' DVD . . . I still love him, though! :-)

  • Well I'm sure there was an abundance of post work on that DVD. You can't expect perfection from such a long show.

  • Exactly the possibility I was contemplating. I like him too much, though - so I'll go with it being real, for now! :-)

  • haha. I know it's hard to admit. I wanna just believe he's flawless.

  • he'd hand off guitars. so he'd play one guitar for maybe 2 songs. 3 at most. so there was never really a need for checkin tuning, as the tuners on the others had to have been checked & double checked before that show for signs of something such as slipping.

this show was more personal. a lot less formal, so absolute perfection wasn't something necessary. perfection to the best degree - yes. absolute - nah. he's amongst fellow artists that understand things such as what you wondered about

    =)

  • I was talking about the vocals! :-)

Of course, his guitars are on a rotor that very few artists have seen the like of - now you see it, now you don't. And, I believe - aside from the tech who tunes his guitars before he gets them - there's even a little chromatic tuner at his feet, which he uses to check his guitar (in the rare event that he uses the same one for two songs running, which happens only once on the DVD).

But, again, I still think he's great, regardless of his slips.

  • MY BAD!!

thought you were speaking of guitars.

now that you say that, it makes me wonder...2.5 hours...of perfection...HOW?!

    that is a GREAT question.

weh. i'm not gonna strain to figure it out - i'll just keep enjoying like you are. :D

  • could just be the acoustics of the room fooling you. if this had where the light is equipment and he has been working on this song for as long as those it might be pretty close

  • It's sad that a lot of people discredit Mayer as just another pop-style singer. He really is such a talented musician.

  • amazing song

  • man his voice has gotten so much better since room for squares era

  • Is his guitar tuned different? The chord you can see he plays after the high D# chord (look 1:15) doesn't sound like what he actually play when I play it myself... Looks like a G#madd9 pulloff'd to a G#m, but sounds (in my ear anyway) like a F7sus4 pulloff'd to a Fm7 - Any info/ideas on that?

  • I found out by listening again that he plays the 11. fret on the B string, the chord being a G#sus2add9 (??) pulled off to G#sus2

  • mayer just writes songs so easily...its scary. hes a real talent...guitar hero of our time

  • cant wait for the new album ..
