Sadly filming for, "Last Of The Summer Wine", came to a close on 28th Aug 2010. Most of the filming was done in Holmfirth and Jackson Town, in West Yorkshire. I live 4 miles, from these locations, in Huddersfield..
The phone rang on the wall and Stan answered it. after a pause, he said "It sure is" and then put the phone down. Ollie said Who was that on the phone?" Stan said " It was a fella saying it's a long distance from New York"

love these guys .made my mum and dads life happy and now making mind as well .they are so funny .wish we could turn back time when the world was a better place to be in .god bless you guys
The Water Rats, was (or still is maybe), a group that fellow entertainers belonged to, they held charitable events and dinners and honoured each others varied achievements, a bit like a less vulgar 'roast'. In London their is a pub, with a mini theatre in it, called 'The Water Rats', although now a music venue, (for young rock bands mainly), the walls are, (or were until very recently at least), adorned with signed photographs of past entertainers of television and stage.
the world is a bad place not bcoz of the few evil doers but due to the many good people doin nothin to stop them .stan & ollie made me laugh and feel that there is still hope for all of us regardless of colour , religion or creed .
This image is reversed. Note that the pockets on their jackets are on the wrong side, and they both wiggle their ties with their left hand at the end.
There are many, MANY things I admire about Laurel and Hardy. One is the fact that, once the team was formed (in 1927), it never broke up, until Hardy's death (in 1957). If there was any jealousy or problems between them (and all reports I've heard was that was never the case), they sure kept them hidden very well. Thankfully, we have a pretty full record of their genius and humanity.
the good one's love them i am 32 i was 7 or 8 when i see them on TV my father like them to my dad is still laughing up there at them. Ant all of the good one's PS all the good one's are not here like my father and i will always love them thanks dad for letting me watch them.
Oliver Hardy had visibly lost a lot of weight already since their appearance on This Is Your Life in 1954, though he still looks well unlike the home film footage of 1956. RIP Stan and Ollie, pure comedy genius.
good bye :( I wish i grew up when you two were making new films,
people take tv and stuff for granted now days, the struggle them two as individuals went through to make it big and to entertain the world during the rough times they did is inspiring. We wont forget you either
Why do I feel so sad watching Ollie here at the end of his life? I really shouldn't, here is a guy who achieved so much and brought a hundred times more pleasure into people's lives than the likes of I ever will. Bless them both!
I grew up watching there films and short films..love watching there comedy! nothing has been made like stan and oliver made and i cant see that anything will be as good!..My 8yr old child also likes watching there films!he finds them rather amusing and interesting to watch!
I recently showed "Babes in Toyland" to my son. I always feel I am doing something important when I introduce him to the great oldies. It's like giving him a renaissance education and what better homage to these great comedians than to immoralize them by having them still evoke big laughs so many years after they are gone? :)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Right after they waved their ties and said goodbye the should of had the entire seating arrangement collapse and then Hardy would of said "Now here's another nice mess you've gotten me into." Then Laurel would have picked up a piece of wood and tried to use it as in instrument or something and Hardy would say "PUT THAT THING DOWN AND HELP ME UP!!!"
The only thing is that Hardy would have "well here's another FINE mess you've gotten me into." Other than that, sounds like you could be the next Hal Roach, lol Nice comment, bud! :-)
@LonesomePine369 Uh oh...I should turn in my Derby and my membership to the Laurel and Hardy fan club. Stan and Ollie and coming to get me...personally. I'm in trouble now ;-) Thanks for the heads up, I almost had it right. Darn, so close too, lol
Funny thing, they are here saying goodbye in 1955, but I was born in 1955, and you could say they were also saying HELLO, spent my life with these guys, I'm now 54 and still love them
I'm just 18 years old. My father used to play recorded movies of Stan and Ollie when I was little, and I think I never laughed and felt like when I see them. I watched them all my life, and I plan to keep doing it. I just wish I could tell them there's never been someone like them :)
@DenisRivarola I am 28, and my dad was the same way. He showed me Laurel and Hardy movies through out my youth, and they are precious to me. I wish I could have met them. They died long before my time though.
Yes, his screen persona could not have been futher from the real Ollie. He was such a lovable gentleman. His nick name around Hollywood was babe. Got the dvd box set. Laughed my socks off. At last a collection that befits their genius.
I love those guys. As for clean comedy?Well, the boxing gloves gag in 'Brats'? It's always good to throw in some 'dirty' stuff for the adults to laugh at. The Goons did the same.Benny Hill, all those you mention... It's a shame if one thinks all comedy today relies on swearing & no-one can write anymore. There are good writers & if you venture onto BBC4 (Don't bother with ITV,of course) you'll see crazy stuff like Mighty Boosch for eg. Those writers haven't copied but they've definately seen L&H :)
At first I thought it was just a lost clip about L&H late in their career with the Water Rats but when I realized that this was literally Stan and Ollie's screen goodbye to their fans and loved one, it was both powerful and touching. What a beautiful partnership.

A great and wonderful speech from the gentlemen. We will Always Love Stan and Ollie no Matter what. God Bless you boys you must be cracking smiles in Heaven.
Stan & Ollie, - two gentlemen & two gentle men. We will never know your like again. Watching you both was like being amongst friends. We didn't just laugh, - we loved you too, and when you both walked off into the sunset for the last time, - a little piece of our childhood went with you.. God bless you, dear friends...
I guess their radio appearance in London from THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO was from the same year? Wow!!! I was being born and my mom could have heard that in the hospital.
MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS, possibly the best heart felt movie ever made, for all ages. through the good and bad times, that movie strikes a cord every time. Long live and god bless Laurel and Hardy.
It's possible that the image is reversed. This and a reported TV appearance in Ireland in 1953 are possibly the rarest L & H non-movie clips. It is touching without a doubt. Also, exasperating, in the sense that while all their imitators (and local stations telecasting quality prints of their 2-reelers) were making a fortune on the new medium, the "Real Thing" was apparently (save one US and UK appearance) never invited to a variety or talk show!

Apparently filmed in CA for use in England in 1955. I sense that the image is reversed however.
What video might be troubled, the audio captures the Boys in a characteristically warm and engaging (and funny) moment.
One of the most historic 47 seconds in film history!!

I agree!
The boys should have been invited to appear on
a tv talk show or a comedy/variety tv show or
even a kids tv show like"The Ed Sullivan Show",
"Joe Franklin's Memory Lane"or even "Wonderama!"
But..as they say..it just wasn't to be.
