  • Sadly filming for, "Last Of The Summer Wine", came to a close on 28th Aug 2010. Most of the filming was done in Holmfirth and Jackson Town, in West Yorkshire. I live 4 miles, from these locations, in Huddersfield..

  • Wow so cool.

  • The phone rang on the wall and Stan answered it. after a pause, he said "It sure is" and then put the phone down. Ollie said Who was that on the phone?" Stan said " It was a fella saying it's a long distance from New York"

  • "Thank you...."

  • great!!

  • This is L&H's last tv appearance on"This Is Music Hall"..not their appearance on"This Is Your Life!".

  • Well, you have said it all. So all I can do is follow in your footsteps and say -

    Thank you Oliver and Laurel.

  • It wasn't just the laughter. These two just made you feel good somehow.

  • Note that Hardy lost some weight during this period.

  • Who were the "water rats?"

  • @davidrodgersNJ

The Water Rats, was (or still is maybe), a group that fellow entertainers belonged to, they held charitable events and dinners and honoured each others varied achievements, a bit like a less vulgar 'roast'. In London their is a pub, with a mini theatre in it, called 'The Water Rats', although now a music venue, (for young rock bands mainly), the walls are, (or were until very recently at least), adorned with signed photographs of past entertainers of television and stage.

  • @davidrodgersNJ

    Google

    Grand Order of Water Rats

for a link to their site,

it won't let me post it on here.

  • Sadly they knew they would never perform again.

  • the world is a bad place not bcoz of the few evil doers but due to the many good people doin nothin to stop them .stan & ollie made me laugh and feel that there is still hope for all of us regardless of colour , religion or creed .

  • They were a couple of so gentle men who gave much pleasure to so many, many people, and thanks to U-Tube for one, still do.

  • This image is reversed. Note that the pockets on their jackets are on the wrong side, and they both wiggle their ties with their left hand at the end.

  • ... thats true ... we will never forget you both ...

  • Interesting,,,,, they spoke more in this short clip than they were "allowed" to in that whole 10 minute "This is your Life" clip.

    Thanks for the laughs, Gents!!

  • There are many, MANY things I admire about Laurel and Hardy. One is the fact that, once the team was formed (in 1927), it never broke up, until Hardy's death (in 1957). If there was any jealousy or problems between them (and all reports I've heard was that was never the case), they sure kept them hidden very well. Thankfully, we have a pretty full record of their genius and humanity.

  • the good one's love them i am 32 i was 7 or 8 when i see them on TV my father like them to my dad is still laughing up there at them. Ant all of the good one's PS all the good one's are not here like my father and i will always love them thanks dad for letting me watch them.

  • Wonder if the image is reversed on this film? A great artifact of the greatest comedy team.

  • Oliver Hardy had visibly lost a lot of weight already since their appearance on This Is Your Life in 1954, though he still looks well unlike the home film footage of 1956. RIP Stan and Ollie, pure comedy genius.

  • Stan and Babe.....the world needs their humor NOW, more than ever. We salute you for your wonderful gift of comedy.

  • water rats? what is that

  • @brahmamurti A showbiz club/association. Kind of like the Friar's Club in America.

  • they just can`t be equalled. the best comedians ever. i love them.

  • What gentlemen. NOt just great comic actors but they seemed to be really good company too.

  • good bye :( I wish i grew up when you two were making new films,

people take tv and stuff for granted now days, the struggle them two as individuals went through to make it big and to entertain the world during the rough times they did is inspiring. We wont forget you either

  • two real gentle men...thank you..

  • i miss them so :'(

  • gud bye ppl ,,,,

  • lovely people . Not often you can say that nowadays

  • And we'll never forget you either.

    Brilliant pair.

  • ein gerücht ist dass stan laurel , der vater von clint eastwood ist :-)

  • Und Ollie seine Mutti ist!

  • Why do I feel so sad watching Ollie here at the end of his life? I really shouldn't, here is a guy who achieved so much and brought a hundred times more pleasure into people's lives than the likes of I ever will. Bless them both!

  • I grew up watching there films and short films..love watching there comedy! nothing has been made like stan and oliver made and i cant see that anything will be as good!..My 8yr old child also likes watching there films!he finds them rather amusing and interesting to watch!

  • I recently showed "Babes in Toyland" to my son. I always feel I am doing something important when I introduce him to the great oldies. It's like giving him a renaissance education and what better homage to these great comedians than to immoralize them by having them still evoke big laughs so many years after they are gone? :)

  • wish i could meet them

  • Ha! Now that would have been a good one.

The only thing is that Hardy would have "well here's another FINE mess you've gotten me into." Other than that, sounds like you could be the next Hal Roach, lol Nice comment, bud! :-)

  • @Shawnster65 NO! the classic line is heres another NICE mess youve gotten me into! not fine!

  • @LonesomePine369 Uh oh...I should turn in my Derby and my membership to the Laurel and Hardy fan club. Stan and Ollie and coming to get me...personally. I'm in trouble now ;-) Thanks for the heads up, I almost had it right. Darn, so close too, lol

  • @Shawnster65 :P

  • i'm ok britnic34 ;)

  • God bless Stan and Ollie. They were the best ever.

  • yeh..possibly the greatest comedians who ever lived

  • mi hanno fatto ridere sempre sono e rimarranno dei geni della comicità

  • Yes,beautiful.Brought a tear to this old cynic's eye :)

  • Beautiful

  • I am the same age and really loved them as a kid adolescent and adult - they were really talented and very very funny.

  • Funny thing, they are here saying goodbye in 1955, but I was born in 1955, and you could say they were also saying HELLO, spent my life with these guys, I'm now 54 and still love them

  • Beautiful boys. Made my childhood much better!!

  • hello bay

  • Aww!

    Love Them.

    </3

  • wonderful men...

  • god i didnt no this is there official goodbye to friends so upsetting laurel and hardy r the best comedians going

  • yeah i got it, it probably is the best

  • What a shame Robert Youngson didn't use this clip in either of his L&H compilations. This would a been a beautiful finish to either of them.

  • lol L&H are the the gr8est comedy duo ever! I got all their DVDs

  • Do you have the episode, 'A Chump at Oxford'? I think that might have easily been one of the funniest ones! And to think, Netflix doesn't have it!

    A shame!

  • I'm just 18 years old. My father used to play recorded movies of Stan and Ollie when I was little, and I think I never laughed and felt like when I see them. I watched them all my life, and I plan to keep doing it. I just wish I could tell them there's never been someone like them :)

  • @DenisRivarola I am 28, and my dad was the same way. He showed me Laurel and Hardy movies through out my youth, and they are precious to me. I wish I could have met them. They died long before my time though.

  • @DenisRivarola this is an awesome statement from someone as young as you are, I am impressed! you are very right though!

  • ... yahhh ... thats so ... we miss Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy ... so funny we love it!

  • miss you forever. Stan and Ollie.

  • ... ihr seid die größten der Welt ... Gott schütze Euch!!! ...

  • How sweet! I have always admired Laurel and Hardy just like millions of others around the world.

  • 2 real gentlemen

  • I have loved them for my whole life and that love will follow me to my end. Thank God for sharing greats as these special humans.

    JeffD

  • Ollie sounds a lot less pompous in real life than he did in the films.

  • Yes, his screen persona could not have been futher from the real Ollie. He was such a lovable gentleman. His nick name around Hollywood was babe. Got the dvd box set. Laughed my socks off. At last a collection that befits their genius.

  • love it good old days

  • These guys are still popular and with the comedy of today being what it is, goodbyes are never permanent.

  • I love those guys. As for clean comedy?Well, the boxing gloves gag in 'Brats'? It's always good to throw in some 'dirty' stuff for the adults to laugh at. The Goons did the same.Benny Hill, all those you mention... It's a shame if one thinks all comedy today relies on swearing & no-one can write anymore. There are good writers & if you venture onto BBC4 (Don't bother with ITV,of course) you'll see crazy stuff like Mighty Boosch for eg. Those writers haven't copied but they've definately seen L&H :)

  • At first I thought it was just a lost clip about L&H late in their career with the Water Rats but when I realized that this was literally Stan and Ollie's screen goodbye to their fans and loved one, it was both powerful and touching. What a beautiful partnership.

  • God rest the best

  • Goodbye and thanks both of you.

  • Yes, older (it was 1955!) but still absolutely endearing.

This was their final public appearance.

So touching that their very last words were "Good-Bye" with the Stan smile and the Ollie tie-wiggle.

A very precious little piece of film.

  • It is soooo sad to see them old. I really loved them

  • Lovely to see. Two legends

  • wow this was cool. I cant believe this was the year my mom was born.

  • mi mom also was born the same year

  • bigrigdriver99 These were the proper comics along side 2 Ronnies Benny Hill Three Stooges Wilson Betty and Keppel what happend to clean comedy wher did all he good writers go

  • A great and wonderful speech from the gentlemen. We will Always Love Stan and Ollie no Matter what. God Bless you boys you must be cracking smiles in Heaven.

  • "Goodbye!!!"...

  • They were the best! I wouldn't let today's movie "stars" into my home.

  • It's so sad to see them older and sick

  • Stan & Ollie, - two gentlemen & two gentle men. We will never know your like again. Watching you both was like being amongst friends. We didn't just laugh, - we loved you too, and when you both walked off into the sunset for the last time, - a little piece of our childhood went with you.. God bless you, dear friends...

  • We'll never forget you and God bless you both.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank You. :)

  • And we shall never forget you 2 (Y)

    RIP

  • How nice and different to see the real Laurel and hardy, no slapstick, no comedy just two great people, talking fom the heart

  • there just great god bless them both

  • Apparently filmed in CA for use in England in 1955. I sense that the image is reversed however.

What video might be troubled, the audio captures the Boys in a characteristically warm and engaging (and funny) moment.

One of the most historic 47 seconds in film history!!

  • I agree!

The boys should have been invited to appear on

a tv talk show or a comedy/variety tv show or

even a kids tv show like"The Ed Sullivan Show",

"Joe Franklin's Memory Lane"or even "Wonderama!"

    But..as they say..it just wasn't to be.

  • I guess their radio appearance in London from THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO was from the same year? Wow!!! I was being born and my mom could have heard that in the hospital.

And I always thought it was from the mid-'30s.

  • endearing

  • Despite what has been written in the film

    and tv history books.

This is L&H's last appearance and their second

    english speaking appearance.

  • these guys were amazing.class!simply class!!

MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS, possibly the best heart felt movie ever made, for all ages. through the good and bad times, that movie strikes a cord every time. Long live and god bless Laurel and Hardy.

  • Thet never show it on television anymore, what happened? Used to be a Thanksgiving day favorite!

  • You're right, I haven't seen it on TV much anymore, but it is widely available on DVD.

  • God Bless L&H. A gift to the world that we shall never forget.

  • beautifully put!

  • I wish they could hear our goodbyes and words of thanks...

  • It's possible that the image is reversed. This and a reported TV appearance in Ireland in 1953 are possibly the rarest L & H non-movie clips. It is touching without a doubt. Also, exasperating, in the sense that while all their imitators (and local stations telecasting quality prints of their 2-reelers) were making a fortune on the new medium, the "Real Thing" was apparently (save one US and UK appearance) never invited to a variety or talk show!

  • no comparison

    they were funny

  • fantastic man thank you

  • great pair brought tears to my eyes with laughter :-)

  • Stan and Ollie's final public appearance. BBC television 1955. What a perfect "goodbye". Masters of timing right to the end.

  • BEST EVER

  • how delightful....thank you...stan and ollie two very gentle men indeed.

  • Thank you for posting this! i love these guys to no end!
