Beaut fish. I reckon leaving the big snapper now you have got one ( 6kg + = 10+ years old) and just spearing the jewies (fast growth rate) and other stuff would be better maybe? From your other vids, looks like you get plenty of fish to eat in a year? How often would you go unrewarded in a spearing session in your area? I'm not having a go at you just asking a few questions, your the one down there with the great whites!
I appreciate where you are coming from about the snapper but to put it in perspective I have made over 1000 dives on this reef over 15 years and have shot about 8 snapper over 5kg in total. My catch of big snapper over my whole diving career could be caught in less than a week by a half decent line fisherman. I really enjoy the challenge of hunting these fish and as they are so hard to get i don't think spearing is much of a threat to the species compared to line and trap fishing
@crayzy99 Thanks for the reply. I agree that killing this many snapper in that time frame is certainly not going to be a problem. I hope you continue to enjoy your sport. I guess that because you post successful vids ( no point showing just swimming around!) the assumuption is that its like that all the time. Just one last question. What is the largest school of Jewies you have seen in the above time frame?
Its hard to tell, I've seen schools of Jew with at least 200 fish mainly small. The biggest school of big fish ie 15kg plus would be around 100 fish. The biggest school I ever saw was about 6 years ago and i reckon it was over 1000 fish nothing bigger than about 8kg. There are lots of big schools of small jew 1-4kg at the moment showing big recruitment over the last two years of flooding 2008-9
