Zeitoun was not arrested because of his religion or culture. He was one of many unfortunates detained and treated horribly. He was released after 2 weeks while others were jailed for months. Parts of his story about the flood don't add up. Everyone I know who was exposed to flood water got sick, got sores, got septic wounds. Not Zeitoun. So I suspect his story.
@BattletoDeath I'm sorry, but there is ample room for doubt about certain aspects of his story, but you would have to experience Katrina as a New Orleanian, as I did. Many people were unlawfully detained and many, many more spent months in maximum security prisons, innocent civilians incarcerated along with violent felons. Zeitoun was very, very lucky that all he got was 20 days. He lied about soldiers threatening him at Mercy Memorial. Prostitutes in 100 degrees surrounded by shit water?
Thank you for posting. This courageous man and wife express the best of America, though they were treated the worst that any group can visit on anyone. How we deal with situations in the worst circumstances tells alot about us as a people. But, someone please put a battery in that smoke detector!! That would drive me nuts going off every 35 seconds or so.
