Gah, I hate the enchanting system in Minecraft. I just grinded non-stop fighting Blazes at a spawner up to level 38 in hopes of enchanting my diamond pick with silk touch. I got Efficiency IV and Unbreaking III, which is great, but I'd give it up three times over if I could just get a silk touch pick.
If I spend 3 hours grinding I should be able to pick what enchantment I get (within reason).
I've enchanted countless items and that ONE enchantment continues to elude me. D:
At 5:26 you said something confusing and sounded confused so to clear it up. Echantability/2 is just the most common number to pick from 0-echantibility.
I watched the whole thing and my mind was fucking blown. Now can someone who ACTUALLY gets this make like a table with levels for best enchantments? ;D?
@xXGamersTheoryXx I'm looking for the same thing. The wiki's too ambiguous to calculate exact probabilities. I need to be an expert at reading source code or something.
OMG I've been reading everything and watching every vid I can find about Minecraft and finally someone produces somthing that shows that he knows what he is talking about. Thank you for your time well spent.
This is incredibly awesome and detailed. I loved this video, I appreciate that you took the time to make it, and you most certainly get a like and a favorite from me!
One of the things I love about hardcore mode is how differently you view experience. In normal survival mode, fighting monsters all night purely for experience before you make an enchanting table is pointless, since you're very likely to die before you get your table. In hardcore mode, though, if you're good enough to get the table, there's a 100% chance that you'll keep the experience, since you can't die in between the present and when you'll enchant something.
This is a really helpful guide! Unfortunately, probabilities are probabilities. My first two enchantments were levels 45 and 44 pickaxes, with great results!
Pick 1: Silk Touch I, Unbreaking III, Efficiency IV
Pick 2: Efficiency III, Unbreaking III, Fortune II
Which is more or less what I wanted -- a Silk Touch pickax and a Fortune III pickaxe (I won't split hairs about the 1 level of Fortune).
My third enchant was a level 48 diamond sword, and I got Knockback II
@happyapple96 I know -- I was saying that I want something with silk touch and fortune (that would negate fortune, anyways). I was saying that I wanted one pickaxe with silk touch, and a second with fortune
I highly doubt that going up in level makes it harder to, as you said going from 0 to 1 is 7xp then 1 to 2 is 14? if anything it means its 14 total. I tested this and even at level 97 my level went up the same speed as a level 1.
@gthkeno My use of the word "difficulty" was in reference to a level's relative difficulty based on how much time is spent getting to it. Being as all the mobs are just as difficult at level 1 as they are at level 100, I, of course, didn't mean it the way you interpreted it. However, at level 97, if you buy a level 50 enchantment and a level 47 enchantment, it will have taken you longer to earn enough XP to buy those 2 enchantments than to have bought them separately.
@MrPixelTech Actually no, if you are sitting in your EXP farm, its more worth it to sit there until level 97 and then go home and get a level 50 enchantment and a level 47. Otherwise all that travel time is wasted. If you are just hunting for that XP, its super inefficient anyway, and getting to level 97 is just as fast as getting to 50 and 47, if not more because of the minimal time spent travelling even when hunting.
The levels all require the same amount of EXP, so your wrong.
@MyNameIsTimeless It gets harder to level up every time you level, for example...
from level 1-2, if it were 10 xp, from 2-3 would be 15 xp. so, going from 50-97 would take a dreadfully long time considering that it gets harder to level after every level up, so in fact, he is right. Think of it in call of duty terms. It takes more xp to level up following each level. would it be easier to get to level 40 twice, or 80 once? obviously, it would be faster to get 40 twice.
I'm sorry if I'm being an idiot, but are the probability tables posted somewhere, and if so, where? I can't find anything in the youtube text and I searched google and came up with nothing.
At 5:34 you say the Gold armor would be most commonly 12. But if 12.5 is the most common it would be 6. (12.5 / 2 = 6.25 rounded = 6). What do i miss here??
Would you update the probabilities on the website guide for pre5? Since Fortune and Silk Touch are now conflicting I assume Silk touch to have a lower chance of being applied now. I'd be really curious how much it changed.
This is too complicated. Instead of the random 3, there should be a list of enchantments with their respective levels and you can choose which one to enchant to the item. After enchanting the item with the specific enchant you can further enchant the item with a multiplier for exp cost, for instance if you have Efficiency 5 on a pickaxe, in order to add Unbreaking 2 the cost of exp should be multiplied by 2. Much simpler and you can choose what enchantment to get.
I appreciate the math, for what it is worth. It helps me figure out the levels I need to get to enchant my gear in my hardcore game.
I am interested in your XP Orb generator. I have made my own with chickens (since they reproduce naturally using their own eggs) which has gotten me to level 34 quite quickly.
Can we have a download to the powerpoint presentation? So we can look at it whenever we need. I'm on a laptop and I can't constantly go back to the video when I forget something.
@sasuketoo I've considered a download to the PPT presentation, but edptry has all of the data up on pernsteiner(dot)org(slash)minecraft... and he'll actually update that data when/if it changes long before I get a chance to make a video/updated PPT
@WeAreGRID lol, yes it does, edptry contacted me to tell me he screwed up on the tables and updated them on the site... well, problem was the whole thing was already recorded. Fraps, when recording static images, doesn't do well with having video frames deleted without taking a portion of the audio with it, that's why the glitch is there, it's edited as close as humanly possible.
So what is the problem with placing somthing between the table and the bookshelves? It seems to me that this has proven that there is no problem with doing this, as long as there are still at least 30 around it
@DangerYourselfCopies I demonstrated this in "Pixel's guide to enchanting", and you can test it yourself, place bookshelves inside that 1 wide gap and watch your enchantment levels drop to 1-5 :)
Which Tool (gold or diamond) and which XP level has the highest chance to get silk touch? When I understood the video and the statistics on the pernsteiner-site a gold tool has a higher probabillity?
@CET73914 to save the most XP, enchant a wood tool with a level 28 enchantment to have a 9.3% probability of getting silk touch. To preserve item cost, use a gold tool, but level 50 enchantments.
@Miny000000 to save the most XP, enchant a wood tool with a level 28 enchantment to have a 9.3% probability of getting silk touch. To preserve item cost, use a gold tool, but level 50 enchantments.

@hexzyle O.O I appreciate it :) Also, the wiki states "within a 2 block distance"... that implies you can place bookshelves in the 1 block between the recommended positioning and the enchanting table
Great video. It taught me two things. 1. The Enchanting System is the most obscure and random aspect of a game that is strongly designed on being intuitive. Maybe it's Mojang's joke on the fans to have an overtly complex and random system in a game where you make what you want by clicking and patterns that look like items being made. 2. This system needs a massive, massive, overhaul at some point in the future.
maybe to help explain my point: google "Rube Goldberg machine"
it's a bit like MC is using an algorithm for randomization that is as complex as a high security data encryption program. it's OVERKILL. that's how it feels. it works, but it's not needed, it's too complicated, and it could be simpler. it could definitely be simpler!
Ok this is all fine and dandy. But how do we know which actually enchantment is on the item!?!!? Doesn't this seem kind of pointless if all we see is a purple glow effect?
This is some amazing information on a feature that for so long nobody knew anything about. Thank you. I'm making a note to go back and put some more time into looking at the algorithms and tables, because I don't think anyone can really get it at the first pass through.
I only notice one thing funny... the magically-decreasing amount of experience levels 20 through 50 are worth at 18:28.
So people know the probabilities surrounding enchanting. Considering it's got 7,000 views I would guess it's something some people would like to know.
To everyone saying that Minecraft shouldn't be this complex, that you shouldn't have to run through these calculations whenever you enchant something, you don't. They're only there to make it seem random while still keeping the game balanced.
So, to be honest, I tuned out during the Math. But, your voice was so much like silk, that I wanted to wrap it gingerly around my shaft and have the full GreenTech experience.
@vulture2772 Yeah, hoodathunket (link in the description) does custom music for them as well as lets them use his regular library. After talking with him, I was given the same permission, so pretty awesome, I love his tunes :D

2. This system needs a massive, massive, overhaul at some point in the future.

maybe to help explain my point: google "Rube Goldberg machine"
it's a bit like MC is using an algorithm for randomization that is as complex as a high security data encryption program. it's OVERKILL. that's how it feels. it works, but it's not needed, it's too complicated, and it could be simpler. it could definitely be simpler!

i am only criticizing this new mechanic of course, not the video and explanations, that's great.

Ok this is all fine and dandy. But how do we know which actually enchantment is on the item!?!!? Doesn't this seem kind of pointless if all we see is a purple glow effect?
signwearer 4 months ago
@signwearer Because it says on the tooltip.........
newe6000 4 months ago
@signwearer tool tips pop up when you mouse-over the item in your inventory.
MrPixelTech 4 months ago
@MrPixelTech Sorry, I hadn't enchanted since PR3, didn't know they added tooltips. Thanks!

@klutterkicker Yeah, 72 hours, 18 just on the power point, I'm hoping that warrants some forgiveness :P

If this is the most basic it can be broken down too, then I'll continue randomly picking an enchantment....

@CaptainHazardFace
So people know the probabilities surrounding enchanting. Considering it's got 7,000 views I would guess it's something some people would like to know.
Bellan336 4 months ago
@Bellan336 yeah theres no more spaghetti so stop trying buddy haha

To everyone saying that Minecraft shouldn't be this complex, that you shouldn't have to run through these calculations whenever you enchant something, you don't. They're only there to make it seem random while still keeping the game balanced.

So, to be honest, I tuned out during the Math. But, your voice was so much like silk, that I wanted to wrap it gingerly around my shaft and have the full GreenTech experience.
