The intire preserve is protected, fishing/hunting is not allowed. You can fish and hunt just to left of the cove; to the right of the peir, and 1 mile off shore... allowing for 1 sq. mile of protected waters.
i have been out there and its loads of fun but DONT grab the tail.also i would say most out there are more than 5 feet from what ive seen.if u go a bit more offshore they get even bigger

Yeah i went once, but like after 5 mins i stepped on a sting ray :( this was 2005

The breeding season where most of them are out is late July/ August, but I saw a bunch of them kayaking over the weekend, too.

It's part of the La Jolla Marine preserve, so I don't think fishing is allowed. Certainly not for the sharks.
