  • This has some great lines. It hasn't lost any of its impact all through the years.

I can tell readers at one stage I communicated with the man himself and quoteth I to him some words from this very song: 'Only the very safe/Can talk about wrong or right/Of those who were forced to chose/Some will chose to fight....'

  • With the touch of a strangers hand, Innocence turns to shame...

  • Thank Christ, well thank Christy, there were many more to come. We had a BBQ last night in the USA and blasted ye'r music up and the Yanks didn't know what the devil we were doing!

    Thank You Mr. Moore

  • Good man christy. My dad played your songs along with planxty when i was a gasson. I have been addicted ever since. Know near every word of your songs especially planxty era. Keep up the good work.

  • another brilliant tune mr.moore thank you

  • How can you not bring the troubles in? How can you claim Irish when you sound orange?

  • 1 Person has no Class !

  • what a wonderful voice i could listen to him all day.

  • I would definitely eat my own legs to be like him.

Except he has legs... so... paradox???

  • Only the very safe can talk about wrong or right

  • What a beautiful song, i have Irish ancestry so do not want the conflict angle brought in but Christy is a wonderful artist, seen him live many times and this song is one of my favs.

  • Please come to NYC, Bklyn or LI ! We'd all love a concert here !

  • God Bless you Christy Moore. Hug from an old Lass,

  • Great song man.

  • best singer came outa ireland in my eyes and ears my hero ledgend

  • fantastic x

  • Thankyou Christy, thankyou. You are a true legend and are a true champion of good courses. Hope that others listen and find this as grate as I have.

  • Great song written by Paul Doran

  • go on christy ye boi ye

  • Luca - I agree. He very nicely and poetically summarises the viewpoint of a colonised culture. Some cultures survive this kind of experience some don't. I think Irish culture in general is a good example of a culture that robustly 'survived' colonisation. Perhaps because it was a relatively local european-style culture, who knows ? It's an interesting question. I'm from a traditionally 'catholic' background myself but I have absolutely no religion. Even so, tunes like this ring very true to me..

  • Just pure liquid gold

  • yes very nice so much i love u

  • Maith a mhic Christy, mo gra duitsa!

  • he sings some of the saddest songs ever

there's no right or wrong in them

    love em

  • joy

  • He sings as natural as giving birth

  • there's not much music about today that is merely a man and his guitar. it's a shame. thank you Christy for keeping it so simple and beautiful...i look forward to your next visit to the barrowlands! :)

  • @celticghirly1916

he's got talent in that old fashioned way

not like the hippy liberal wussies that play the guitar today

  • There's plenty of talent around today. Ignorance is bliss, though, I understand.

  • this song was written by a man called paul doran, who happens to be my stepfather! i am very proud to say! :)

  • Thanks for this clip!!!

Are you in concert in germany this year? I would like to hear you live.

  • Just my double luck. I will be in Dublin on the 29th of April, but my plane leaves at 5 p.m.

So what? The concert is already sold out.

  • Truer words have never been spoken or sung.

  • All time Classic!! Love it!

  • The immense history of a shore of kings of all little things and all universel properties Natives is great way into this idea. Come on christy give us more.

  • I love this song so much

  • who gives a fuck who he plays for??

he is irish, he is a legend & we all love him.

  • yes agordeire that is why he stopped suporting the IRA.

even so i still love him for his musiv.

  • Dear Christy,

    still a great song!

    Makes me freeze.

    Love

  • The reason he stopped supporting the IRA (as far as I know) is because of Enniskillan, thas why he doesnt sing any rebel songs anymore. Your entitled to your opinion Eamonn. Answer me this though; do you think what happened to the Palesinians he last few months(years besides) was right??

  • At least he still has empathy for his fellow country men across the so called border. .What happened in Ireland the last 30 years nobody could have planned. By the way Enniskellen was a mistake..

  • christy give me a shout and well sing together

  • Oh Christy, How I love ye. You are one of the reasons I love Ireland so much.

  • Tough Eamon!

My info his he's playing a concert in AID of the Palestinians some time soon. Those same people who had Israeli bombs dropped on them for weeks & were left unprotected.

  • A true irish legend - total integrity.

  • Was a big fan. Not any more. Seen him supporting hamas a few weeks back and heard he used to be a big IRA fan too. No more

  • did you check out why he doesn't support the ira any more?

  • And the music?

  • A great song from a great singer- this was my first ever Christy album- reminds me of my early days in London- a new adventure- Christy's songs were part of my sound track...

  • I have none of that money left. in case you were wonderin... I'm a Corkman like Jack Doyle. Town of Youghal..

  • Thank you.. I made tons of money and friends wit your help and dis one was one of da best...

  • Hmm want to delete my previous comment. Very rash.

  • The most beautiful song I've heard in a while. If there's Bard nominations, I vote CM. Shamefully, the Israelis and Hamas might take a leaf. Although thats a fresh kettle of which I don't want to stir.

  • Is CM doing any more of these? Its an utter classic, of course, but I need more.

  • They never came home!!!! Its a wonderfull song!!!

    Everyone listen and learn it!!

    Its banned from being played!!!

    It should never die!!

So everyone learn it and sing it where you go and pass it on true generations!!!!

  • We are all of the same Voice Christy sea a saimhse le doine go lear ndeirigh ag daimhse so rince lena cheile go deo for there is no end buiocheas le dhia man ag 33 from Galilee he is the dance and the dance comes from Thee Bootifull Bootinous

  • Paul Doran thanks a mill Christy you shud be in top of the pops !

  • You sang John O'Dreams at my uncles funeral (Derek Dunne - His brother Michael's son) in the Cathedral in Longford. I was I forget how old at the time, but everyone said it was an amazing performance. Derek was always great fun to be with, sad he is not still with uS. I still have the late late show to watch him on. Thanks

  • you are amazing, and you have touched my life. thank you, and god bless. xo

  • 16 years ago I went to see you play in the Point Depot ('O2'for the younger follower),after playing a heartrenchinig rendition of'they never came home',with some in tears,my mate shouted out to u.Of course u acknowledged us with...'who said that'as a spot searched the crowd..Were over here...the crowd fell apart..later that month, our comment made the front page of HOTPRESS..'CHRISTY FOR TAOISEACH'

Who knows,we can live in hope...I still have it years later,an I'm waiting 4 u to sign it for me..

  • y'know, on one of his tours he mentioned that he was "playing a gig on a saturday night and fella sang this song and I asked him if he'd let me have it, and he did"

    Thank God, right?

  • cool keep it up

  • You are the best singer/songwriter that ever lived. This song is the most powerful song I have ever heard

  • Great song.

  • Up The Christy Moore!!

  • God bless you Christy Moore

  • A new fan of Christy Moore. I live in Texas. This is an amazingly powerful song! Thank you for posting Mr. Moore!! You have a new fan for life!

  • Hi, Mr. Moore. I commented a couple months ago. Just last week I sat down and tried to sing and play this song for the first time and uploaded it here on YouTube. I apologise because it's just a rough draft (by ear), nowhere as good as yours!!! I love the song and how it sums up current world situations. I love you and your music. Thank you!

  • Maith thú Christy

  • one of his best, thanks for posting it.

  • What a truly POWERFUL song, especially in today's world... Thanks, Mr Moore, you're awesome!

  • super stuff!get back on here man ,post it up!thanks from Labrador...

  • he's the guitar tuned down to d sharpe easy to do !!

  • yer mean Eb aye?

I bet you tune it by ear ey?

  • well if it's so easy you do it !!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love this song and Christy. What a musician!

  • anybody know what tuning he's using? tell ya i'd love to know that. think the song definitely has a go at religious figure-- 'the fishers of men , they wave their 'truth' like bait..

  • I went on to his website, and asked onhis message board, (I've been driving myself crazy, trying to find out as well). And he said it's standard but the Bass E string is tuned to F. Saying he wouldn't recomend it, since he's a self taught guitarist who has picked up bad habits. Yet whenever I try playin' along I'm still always in the wrong key that he's in. I've only recently figured out his D chord, but it only works for 1 song. I guess there's thing in life we;ll never know.

  • Fishers of men = british mi5, its there motto

  • No. He's clearly talking about the role of church evangelisation in colonising places like South America. It's not about Ireland or Britain.

  • pure poetry, a complete definition of history in the Troubles. well sung by christy.

  • The Only person or group i ever went to see, was Christy and Declan Synott, and i think hes the greatest all time singer, unimitible, timeless, imbuing people with music takes great skill and knowledge and Christy always hits the notes, coming too Tyrone anytime soon!!!!????

  • christy moore = living legend

  • "plundered and set aside...grown fat on swallowed pride"

What a tune! whoever wrote this was a poet. sounds like its about the colonisation of the americas but could be talking about any one of the colonised countries anywhere in the world. Palestine Ireland The Americas African countries... anyone who lives in such a place would easily identify with these words and especially the way christy tells it. Thats what music is about really, telling a story.

  • Words and music by Paul Doran.

  • i also have to say wow, you know how to say it man, cool. thanks again, your a star bar X

  • thank you

  • god bless you christy....made my day
